    You know, I find it hard to really condemn this one. It's kinda dull, and creepy, but it's unique? Like, the beast design is different, they clearly put a lot of work into it, with the candles and all. The puppetry isn't too bad either. I mean it's not perfect or good by any means. But there's something at least kind of charming about a project that they clearly put effort into. It's not great, but I can't condemn it the same way I'd do for the cheap animation ones.

    • @RedHatMeg
      @RedHatMeg 4 года назад +38

      It's a staple of Eastern Bloc animation. Most of our animated movies were either simple like No pagadi from Russia, or claymation/pappetier stuff like this one. And if you've seen, say, "Goodbye, Lenin" (which is about the nostalgia many of Eastern Germans feel for communist years), there is a scene when the main character watches claymation cartoon about Mr. Sandman.
      I can understand the Russian voiceover too. To this day, if a foreign show or a movie is in Polish TV/streaming service, it has to have a "lektor". We liked it better than our dub and sometimes subtitles.
      I guess, this version of Beauty and the Beast is a unique way for Westerners to experience animation from the other side of Iron Curtain.

    • @ninavale.
      @ninavale. 4 года назад +16

      @@RedHatMeg The old puppet shows. I'm 29 now and I remember growing up on puppet tv series back when Wieczorynka(Bedtime Storytime would be a good English translation) used to air. And amongst some Western animation they would show Maurcy i Hawranek(Maurice and Havranek) Koralgol(Coralgol the Bear/Jeremy the Bear), Kasztaniaki(Chestnuts) Mały Pingwin Pik-Pok( Little Penguin Pik-Pok) and ofc the old-time classic Miś Uszatek(Floppy-ear the Teddybear). I have to say...this is one of the more UNIQUE takes of Beauty and the Beast. Granted, I have a book which gives the 'African retelling' of the story where the Beast is a Leopard man....that they drew hot for some reason which sort of offsets the idea that he's a beast. I mean, yeah. He's a wild animal but you sort of defeat the purpose when you make him look like a Leopard bishonen model compared to how even this version did it with the weird literal elephant man with the weird hair everywhere and all that. But aside from that I actually like this version even with your commentary. It's not a cash in considering it came out like..15+ plus years before the Disney one and it just has such a unique feel to it overall.

Almost all, if not all were the favored forms of animation in the east. Even the animators of the east were heavily controlled and monitored to ensure unmarxist creativity was not sprouting up.
    I'm honestly surprised this was even allowed to be made. Commercial introductions or studio introductions before the film missing doesn't surprise me since this is a DDR govt production.

      Trivia: they aren't "dubbing" the content but "lectoring". It's reading outloud a document for many people to hear, pre-radio era term, but also applied to television translations when stuff is just explained rather than fully voice acted. Lectoring works out just like Zelda games where you get the full meaning but the character chatter enhances it enough.

My host family and school were located in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, a federal state to the west of Poland. The TV would pick up some Polish channels. It was so weird seeing American shows, like the Cosby Show, with the original English voices, and a Polish narrator over top of it. In Germany, everything is straight-up dubbed.

Can't remember if we got any other Polish channels, but Puls was the one with all the lectored American TV shows. You're probably used to it, but as an outsider, lectoring looks soooooo weird. Then again, dubbing is weird to me, too. I don't know how Germans can watch the mouth movements not matching the voice. As an American, I found it such a distraction that I couldn't stand watching dubbed movies. Well, except for cartoons. Disney especially does an amazing job on their foreign dubs.
