Interesting and certainly plausible. On another account of the civil war the primary diet on each side was considered a big factor in endurance. Confederate diet of pork and corn vs Union diet of beef & wheat. In the Boer war biltong gave the boers and advantage as did pemmican (based on Bison) gave the tribal warriors & fur traders a leg up on endurance and mobility.

The answer to that question is a definite yes. Chicory coffee became a staple in Louisiana post war as well.

I didnt know freeze dried Folgers was a coffee brand during the Civil War. Chicory was fairly ubiquitous as well
