Just wonderful. The chamber nature has always fitted this Concerto best...as it was designed. Brilliant playing by the soloists. Refined trumpet tone,,,yet exuberant when needed. The piano reading has so many excellent individual touches. As always, Maestro Gergiev is at the top of his game. His orchestra is on top of theirs as well. I LOVE this piece, my first introduction being 40+ years ago. . The audio quality here is full of presence, the video as good as it gets. A dramatic performance...yet, for the most part with the requisite sardonic humor. I love how the pianist set things up for the Maestro at a "scene change, so to speak. I will say, at 15:34 I would have liked a little more of the "mysterioso" take, featuring those beautiful, yet eerie strings over the gorgeous harmonic structure. The piano felt just a little too "muscular" for me. Not a deal breaker, though. The finale is played with relish. The clean "triple tonguing" from the trumpeter as good as it gets. I admit to liking 22:13 slowed up, more cabaret, "gas-house" as Americans would say, "saloon" style. Here it was played virtuosically. Artist choice. Overall, a very fine performance of this wonderful concerto.
