    I bought my Filipina wife's family Rhode Island red chickens, and an incubator... They now are raising about a hundred hens, for eggs, and they butcher the roosters at about a year old... They also crossbreed the Rhodes island red roosters with the native hens... They love the meat and eggs.

    Speaking to a number of Filipinos they have told me that food prices have risen dramatically and are now comparable to Western Countries which your video does a pretty good job of supporting. While not a problem for expats (and their partners) who are on good pensions or other sources of income it is becoming a major problem for Filipinos who are on much lower wages. So an expat in the Philippines has lots of advantages over living in their own country (not just food prices) but it looks like the Filipinos themselves are becoming poorer and poorer.

    • @Scarrrz
      @Scarrrz 3 месяца назад +4

      That was my thoughts as well the more I watched this video and saw how comparable the prices are, and with reference to the Filipinos wage gap situation, just truly represents how much harder it is for Filipinos to survive here... Sad situation.

    Most likely the chicken / meats purchased in the Philippines would of been considered Organic or Free Range in the USA. Also, a lot of the cheaper priced chicken at the large chain grocery stores in USA is now imported from China. They try to keep this a secret but those in the industry know what's going on.

    This is comparing to PH supermarket. Wet market is better for some things. The "weak" carrots are only in grocery store. In wet market, the are bugs bunny style stogie carrots.
    Eggs at wet markets are very weak, gotta get the "expensive" ones from the grocery.

      we have a sari-sari store locally that sells quality eggs for 10p each. so a tray of 30 costs 300p. ($5.12 USD)
      some vendors sells eggs that are 'weak'. thin shells with yolks that break easily, so those sell for about 8p each.

    Reekay I was amused as I am an Expat Contractor who has some rentals in South Bend, IN and next week I am Moving to Dumaguete after visiting for several years and I keep telling people when i visit my local Krogers how much things cost in the Philippines and also the Biggest difference is ALLOT Less chemicals and Much Fresher in Philippines and only difference is no Convenience frozen dinners like there is all over the USA. Dairy and Steaks are only big items costing less in US as we in Indiana have farms with pigs, cattle and so much dairy during pandemic they tossed out all the surplus. But NO real fresh seafood
    So just like everything there are trade-outs and I'm actually working with a local farmer as i want to get food fresh Before it hits the Farmers market. And i also am asking for certain things to be grown like Tomatoes and lettuces of different kinds and trying to also see if we can get bigger potatoes.

    Wife and I eat simple foods prepared at home. Also been eating garden veggies I raised because I like growing veggies (gave away most of the crops). As a whole, the U.S.A. has some of the lowest food costs in the world. Well studied and documented. You can always find exceptions though.

    Hard to do a true comparison for many items. Broccoli for instance, in the Philippines you get stuck with the stalk that's as thick as your wrist, and few florets. Also in the USA there are much better sales prices and the ability to shop around are much better. Publix, an upscale grocer is pricey, but has BOGOs that change weekly. You don't actually need to buy 2, you can get one or more and it rings up at half price. Walmart meat is actually pretty good quality, and Aldi's is way cheaper than Walmart for most things.

In subsequent trips and then living there, I found a lot of the produce less than Ideal, both in Mindanao and Dumaguete. I'm sure the produce in Cebu and Manila is very good in the big mall grocers, at very high prices. Only rice and fish are cheap, and they dump sewage directly into the ocean. Man, eggs were sometimes $9 a dozen where I lived in Arizona. Maybe because of shortages and that was all that was left on the shelf. We often had shortages out in the sticks away from the cities. I haven't done as detailed an analysis as you, but on average I get about 1.5 times as much overall for $200 equivalent here in Bohol as I would get for $300 in rural Arizona. Dining out is way cheaper, even in more expensive Panglao. Less than half of what it costs in the US, and down to even 1/3 or 1/4 in the province.

    You overlooked kilo to pound conversion. 1 Kilo = 2.2 lbs. Your US price should be multiplied by 2.2. There you would get true numerical comparison of price of the same weight.

    • @Lifebeyondthesea
      @Lifebeyondthesea  3 месяца назад

      1 kilo does equal 2.2 lbs. however, 1 pound is conversely only 0.453 of a kilo. therefore the US price per pound is 0.453 of the kilo price.
      doing it your way, the result (multiplying by 2.2) would be off by almost 4X.

      if you are a Single man (not married) then renting is the way to go. maintains your mobility/options of where to live and rent is really cheap here. an apartment for under $450usd is easy to find.
      if you are married, and happily married for a few years.. only then would i consider buying a house for the wife as part of her security for the future. consider it hers, because legally it is. the land can only be owned by a PH citizen.

      @@Lifebeyondthesea Has to be the right type of cinnamon (Ceylon vs Cassia- HUGE difference in nutritional benefits), walnuts are good- but cashews have a slightly better nutritional profile. Oatmeal is ok as long as its steel cut- yes, carbs... but they don't have a high glycemic index compared to other breakfast carbs- like potatoes, breads and rice. And honey? Uless you are diabetic, the Phyto nutritional profile, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial properties make this 'sugar source' an incredibly powerful food to just ignore offhand.
      All carbs and sugars are not created equally.
      A good example is one of the 'rare' monosaccharides (one molecule 'simple sugars' like glucose, fructose and galactose).
      That simple sugar is called 'Allulose'. Did you know that more than 95% of allulose is not absorbed by the human body- but it IS a 100% natural sugar (found in small amounts in raisins and figs for example)!
      Allulose is a 'rare sugar' about 70% as sweet as table sugar, won't raise your blood glucose levels or mess with insulin sensitivity. It tastes like 'real sugar' because... it IS a real sugar- with 90% less calories!
      Its properties are very similar to table sugar. It comes in a crystalline state just like table sugar. It dissolves well in liquids like coffee, tea, etc., you can caramelize it and even use it for baking without any strange aftertastes.
      The problem was its wasn't cost effective to extract or synthesize... up until recently! Now you can order it off of Amazon. It is a diabetic game changer for those who don't like other natural 'substitutes' like Stevia, Monk Fruit, Honey or sugar alcohols.

      aside from landers or s&r... the mall grocery stores do sell 'fresh' (not frozen) chopped/mixed packages of vegetables. but here's the skinny on that;
      if you buy them 2-hours before the grocery store closes, they are then 50% off. a good deal. what they call, "buy 1, take 1" (2 for 1) however, know that these chopped veggies and fruits are ones that started to show spoilage so they cut them earlier in the day. they are generally fine for consumption, but you really need to cook/eat them within 24-hours.
      otherwise you will find that they spoil very quickly due to cross-contamination on the cutting board in the store. if you really wanted to, you could soak the veggies/fruit in a bowl with just a small, teaspoon, amount of hyrogen peroxide (or lemon juice) to reduce any bacteria so the fruits/veggies last slightly longer than 24-hours. .
