When to stand up on a longboard?

The perfect timing to stand up on your board is when you feel the entire board being dragged by the wave and no longer by your paddles. The moment in which you can stop paddling and your board goes on its own. Though you don’t want to wait too long to avoid to slide down to the bottom of the wave. You want to take off right when you feel being dragged. Many times I see beginner surfers almost there to ride the wave but they stand up too early and miss the momentum. On flip side, I also see lots of people nose diving because they are too forward on the board and stand up late. Each wave has it’s own timing. The more you practice the more you’ll iterate and learn.

It’s a fluid movement and you’re actually pushing the board under your feet as the wave drops. Ex surf instructor here. And started in 1969. Yup! I’m old as dirt! 😝

I surfed a short board ever since I started sounds strange but when I rode a longboard it blew my mind...barely have to paddle and easily ride knee high surf
