  • The night of 26 September 2022 will make space history - as the moment when @NASA's DART spacecraft impacts the Dimorphos asteroid in an attempt to divert its course - humankind's first planetary defence test. Next, in 2024, ESA launches its Hera spacecraft to investigate the post-impact asteroid. In fact, Hera is not one spacecraft but three: it carries with it ESA's first deep-space CubeSats to make extra observations of its target.
With the Hera mission, ESA is assuming even greater responsibility for protecting our planet and ensuring that Europe plays a leading role in the common effort to tackle asteroid risks.
In this video, Ian Carnelli, Hera mission manager, and members of the Hera team, reflect on the DART impact and introduce Hera and its Milani and Juventas CubeSats.

This is AWESOME!! Today's effort was an amazing success for all involved, a Big thumbs up to SpaceX for such a great shot too, their launch and release was so spot on that flight adjustments weren't required to hit the target, that's pretty darn cool! 👍👍

I think it's a shame the AIM/DART mission fell apart. Wouldn't it be preferential to have the orbiter in place before the impact?

yeah, that would have been really awesome!

Launch in 2024? Aww.. I thought HERA was already just around the corner and ready to do some science right after the DART impact.

Nah HERA will launch in 2024, today's cubesat didn't have a name really, on some pages they say LICIACube👍

2024??? Two years late. I don't understand why space agencies forget about marketing. I thought a "space GoPro" was already there in orbit.

There is, it is just another CubeSat that is called LICIACube. But yes it is a pitty that the Hera (or AIM, how it was called originally) was not made possible as early as originally intended.

Perhaps it would have been better to land on it and push it instead of shooting it, to prevent all the debris. The army is probably already doing this.

Just shows they never really had faith in DART actually doing it's job if this was not ready for launch right after it!?!?!

Here and Dart were supposed to launch at roughly the same time, but Hera was delayed, and it was chosen to not delay dart but just sent it alone instead and sent here afterwards.

The reason was that originally Hera didn’t get funding. So the problem was money.
