- The equipment you need to sweep a chimney is really cheap so save money by doing it yourself. Check out my in-depth demonstration on how to sweep a chimney.
Here I’m sweeping the chimney of my woodburner stove, however, much of the points demonstrated are applicable for an open fire as well.
The equipment featured is readily available in the UK and other countries. It’s important to read the notes below before following my steps on how to sweep a chimney yourself.
IMPORTANT:
I am not a professional chimney sweep. When in doubt, always consult a professional chimney sweep. Your insurance company may require a certificate of sweeping - only a qualified professional will be able to provide you with this.
The instructions in this video are specific to the woodburner stove, chimney, and equipment used in this UK based demonstration. The instructions may not be suitable for all stove, fireplace and chimney set ups - especially chimneys that have a liner or are non-brick.
Be aware of the condition of your chimney before sweeping and any harm sweeping it personally may cause to yourself or your property. Sweeping flues and other connections to your chimney may also be required.

Keep in mind that I've only used it for a couple weeks, that being said, so far so good ruclips.net/user/postUgkxAU9pOCSV9Y5JprooHvfxTpOrt4hx8uRM . Using it at 8 ft. by 8ft. deer blind that is insulated. I have to keep the door cracked for it to get enough air to burn, but that is very likely the wood I've used. Much better quality than I expected for the price. Now if I can just take it easy in the beginning it won't be 90 degrees in my blind. All in all it seems like a keeper.

As a chimney sweep (not dissing this guy or anyone else) the worst jobs we go to are usually people who have been sweeping their own chimneys for years, we're called by the wife or stubborn husband who finally admits there's a problem, and we come to find the chimney completely packed or they recently had a chimney fire.
Again I'm completely fine with people trying to sweep their own chimneys just make sure to verify the chimney is genuinely clean and do it daily if you burn 2 cords a year. If you're up to 4 or more definitely consider cleaning it twice a year. You can do whatever you want just please don't assume that everyone's chimney is as simple to clean as some videos will make you believe

Must be the cleanest chimney flue in the UK.
Helpful thank you, we have had an open fire so are already familiar with that process but was a bit unsure with our new log burner, which also does not have a flue because the chimney is perfectly OK (and was informed of this by a reputable shop). We have a carbon monoxide alarm just in case. I would have thought a lot of the problems with fires is that people do not burn dry seasoned wood but all sorts of inappropriate material in their ignorance.
Flue liners are for old brick lined chimneys which are not lined with clay liners. If your chimney is in good order and properly lined a metal flue liner is not required. Building regulations state this.

Great video Warren. Some of the comments by the so called professionals are purely based on greed, i understand the need to protect what is probably a dyeing profession, but to criticize you so pointedly is absurd in my opinion. The tools for cleaning chimneys are readily available from most hardware shops, bought with out the need for a professional certificate of excellence, therefore with a few tutorial videos like yours, we all can have the ability to do a job that can save a few quid, in these difficult times. That aside. I would urge that every now and again to get a professional chimney sweep, who has all the necessary training and certificates to check the flue and chimney for defects, such as cracks and a build-up of creosote with a camera, which is the only way to make sure that a chimney is in good shape. Well done again warren for a good quality picture and sound video that was informative and instructional for those of us that will give it a go. The comment i made above about greed was probably a step to far, i understand the dangers of a solid fuel set-up and the real need for professionals in this area, they are their to keep us all safe, but their will always be those of us who will try this ourselves, and in that respect warrens video was one of the better ones on youtube.
Thanks very much Michael. I agree. I would (of course) where a mask etc if being a chimney sweep was my occupation and I was doing it every day. However, as you say, with the tools readily available, I feel there is no harm doing it once per year yourself. And I totally agree that every so often you should get a professional in.

Keeping your house family and neighbours safe is a priority, too many people learn the hard way from making money saving DIY mistakes. When you have seen the people who have lost family members through these decisions they understand why they pay a very small bill of between £30-60.

Some insurances require annual camera inspections if thatched and certain chimneys can have soot traps, downdraughts, gravity fed back boiler units....
The video is good but not a safe practice and potentially not a money saving tip.
@@DaveL83 People may not realize that some deaths in the home are caused by carbon dioxide poisoning from fires. This is another reason for having it swept at least twice a year. On many occasions I have found that badly fitted stoves and flue liners, cause many problems. The amount of stoves I have gone in to sweep and had to condemn as too dangerous to use, I could fill a small book..Again, DIY, stove fitting is not recommended, nor is using a unqualified, stove fitter. You need an accredited fitter. One example - I was called in to sweep a stove...after a very short examination I condemned the stove. The young woman tenant with two young children complained to me of drowsiness, sore eyes and throat, when the stove was lit. This and the examination sent alarm bells ringing in my head. I condemned it as unsafe. The chap who owned the house, a joiner by trade, had installed it himself...He was not a happy camper when I condemned it. He asked the fire brigade to inspect his installation, as he would not take my word for it..They confirmed what I had said. This man, wanting to save money, could have caused the deaths of three people. I could relate other nightmare stories, but this I feel says it all. I will end by saying, after using the, now out of date, old brush and rod, shown on this vid...I moved to Power Sweeping. The layout for me as a sweep was very expensive, but the client, got the benefit. I did not put the expense of my new equipment onto the client. My price stayed the same..I benefited in the end, as word got round. 'I am retired now' so my post has NOTHING to do with greed, but more to do with the safety of the others. I have seen too much and too many disasters NOT to post this. DIY, is good if you are putting up a garden wall, fence, shelf in the home etc...But NOT when it comes to things like electricity, gas, plumbing and yes, chimney sweeping and stove installations. Things that could put a family in real danger. USED A PROFESSIONAL - REDUCE THE RISK TO HEALTH AND LIFE. THERE ARE ENOUGH DANGERS IN AND AROUND THE HOME WITHOUT ADDING TO THEM.

Is your flue lined Warren? Mine is and I don't understand how ash would be accessible from the hatch if the stove pipe is attached to the liner.

Great video,,,,,, I swept the chimney myself .....till brush come off and got stuck up the chimney . Had to ring the experts to remove the brush and sweep the chimney. But the good thing is now my insurance would payout should I have a chimney fire and have to call the fire service out . Who put the hose down the chimney and fill it with water so of course, it would go all over the carpets, etc This happen to a friend and was changed for the fire service. SO NO DIY , as you cant certificate the chimney that you have done.
Thank you for tips, I need to sweep my chimney. Strange that the designers/manufacturers have not made chimney sweeping brush that locks into place and cannot come off until unlocked, that way; it could be used, twisted either way doing even better job. with flick of the wrist to and fro, more relaxing too than continuously doing it one way. You made nice tidy job of it, no soot on your clean white walls, surrounding fire place.
All professional sweeps have exactly what you're mentioning.

The brush is a available. Just not at a DIY price. It’s a tidy job because this is probably the 4/5th time it’s been done. I do the same. Never film a first sweep. That’s where the soot is.
@@markellis197 I used a clever technique afterwards when I swept my chimney. I cut a peace from a 40mm white plastic waste pipe, I secured it into the middle of the fabric I used to prevent soot entering the living room. I put the poles through the hole making it easier to slide to and fro, if you know what I mean, to sweep the chimney.
What about for oil burning systems I want to try to sweep my chimney myself should I go from top to bottom or bottom to top?
I wonder how many chimney sweeps have been called to remove a chimney brush, that accidentally unscrewed from the rod while in the chimney.

Buy rods for 100 quid that are nylon and flex more then do your chimney annually. Don't burn wood with more than 20% moisture and check your insurance policy as some state chimney will need sweeping annually by a pro. Negative comments by chimney sweepers trying to protect their income. Commonsense will provail.
Dangerous advice is only given by cowboy fools. Let's hope you don't cause a death from your £30 money saving tip.
I'm thinking about getting a stove wood burner, but from my research a flue lining runs from the flue all the way to the new cowl at the top of the chimney.. so how exactly does soot get outside of its confined flue lining space?
The lining is what you would be sweeping, if you have a lining.

You were tuning the rods anticlockwise when withdrawing them, which would unscrew them, not tighten them. Need to keep an eye on that!
The rods have an opposite thread. When he attached a new rod it screwed in anti clockwise

He was turning rods the wrong direction, you don't get rods anti clockwise threads
If you look at the print on the bag the video is clearly a mirror-image and they actually screw clockwise (like all others I've ever seen!). I reckon he got his commentary wrong and just decided to flip the vid rather than clarify.
What do you call the sealed top part of the fire place? Is it called a hatch or something else? I have an open chimney that I want to convert to a usable storage but I need to seal of dust coming down

It all depends on the size of the house. The brush needs to reach the top of the chimney pot.

How do I measure the exact flue size without going up on the roof?
Mine was done recently (it needs to be done every 1 or 3 years here depending on the volume of wood burned). From what I could see, very little soot came down, but lots of tar. A heavy duty looking metal 'brush' was used that was fitted to the flue size which scrapes/knocks off the tar. Not sure the kind of brush used here would get the tar off as I suspect it glues itself to the chimney. And if you don't get the tar off, then I suspect the chimney could ignite quite easily.
Twice a year it the recommendation.
The new brushes and rods are self locking. No danger of unscrewing..also tape the flue where it joins the stove..some leak..if this happens..seal the joints permanently. Ok go on. I have removed many brushes that had come unscrewed...not just because a home owner did their own..this has also been done by so called pro sweeps. Be safe..get a certified sweep. So how would you remove tar hard and soft ? That must be for another vid.

Bloody hell man..do you not realise, soot it carcinogenic..can cause cancer...I used a pro Hoover to do this.
I sweep mine twice a year but I have invested in proper flexible rods which paid for thenselves after a single sweep. I paid a so called certified sweep only once. He stuck a conical metal head on the end of his rods which destroyed my liner. Never again. Every 3 years is dangerous to your property and your health. I witnessed a chimney fire once and a blockage will kill you.

Do NOT do what he did. This is not a safe, clean, effiecient, or proper way to sweep tour chimney (oh dis I mention safe). For all you homeowner who don't know the proper way, I know it looks like a great video but please for safety don't do it. I'm truly not trying to be rude but hopefully saving a life!

what if i have a chimney cowl?
I'm guessing you get someone to stand outside to gauge when the brush reaches the top of the chimney and then drop a few inches below, so you don't displace the cowl?
Like so many people have said- skip this and hire someone who is a accredited chimney professional.
What happens when you damage the flue and your not aware this happened? Hire a professional.
As I retired sweep..NACS trained...sweeping a chimney 'should be left to a trained pro'. Video's like this does not explain the dangers and problems..and believe me..every chimney is different. As a sweep who has tackled chimneys up in the highlands of Scotland..from castle, blocks of flats in Perth..not many left now in cities and towns..stoves mainly now..to cottages, country hotels and mansions..and everything inbetween..the dangers of doing your own ..especially the with old style equipment..is not recommended. I live overseas now so have no horse in this race..but still have an interest in the job..and new equipment..which I started out with many years ago, I swapped over from the old brush to the new..and traveled from Scotland to England to become efficient in the new equipment equipment and use of..also to understand the risks..dangers..problems etc..doing your own is not recommended. I have known so called self trained and some trained sweeps..to nearly burn a building down. Can you risk it ?? Your house insurance will not cover it. I have no problem with people sweeping their own..but please take training from a pro organisation first. Not worth the risk just to save a little money.
Brush goes up and down. It's not a skillset,on par with wiping your ass or brushing teeth, of all things I've done the least skill

You don’t need “training” to push some rods and a brush up or down a hole, just common sense…..to hit a nail into some wood doesn’t require training just common sense and the will to do it properly, you are a typical jobs worth that if you were in charge would require and force people to take a three year course to spread salt onto your drive all because of the “dangers” 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Don’t forget that in the UK, for insurance, flues should be cleaned annually by a professional who gives you the required certificate for insurance purposes after the job has been done.

Feeerrrrrkkkk! Cleaning chimneys for a living, I rarely see one as clean as that! Piercing a hole in the bottom of a carrier bag and expecting it to contain the waste is a disaster waiting to happen- what do your insurance company have to say about that that? Where was your PPE? Soot is carcinogenic and no dust mask of any sort! Please Please Please, if you do try this,make sure to wear at least PP3 mask and test your CO alarm when you do it.

Think you were turning the handle the wrong direction. They are threaded clockwise. You seem to be turning them anti clockwise when rotating the rods. Just an observation

So going by the comments from the pros, they must have done 4yr degrees on holes and fire? It's hardly rocket science, loads of ppl do and have been cleaning their own for as long as I can rem. Anyone who has enough DIY cop on to be able to fit their bathrooms, fit flooring etc etc I'd imagine they could read up on what method to use for their chimney design, and DIY it without much trouble
I am a qualified chimney sweep and do not recommend sweeping your own appliances as a chimney sweep does not only sweep the chimney but will also check the appliance to ensure its still safe and in good working order. carbon monoxide kills is it worth the £50 a year ?
Strange no one ever died of carbon monoxide poisoning before modern gas installation and construction methods .
Don't believe EVERYTHING you are told ! probably best not believe anything, find out for yourself, do it yourself ; relying on so called 'professionals ' or ANYONE else, is a fool's game .
The most deadly thing everyone has in their home , is the 'smoke detector' : it contain americium in a small lead box , which is the deadliest form of irradiation known to man ! and we wonder why 'cancers ' have risen from 1 in 4 , pre-smoke alarms, to 1 in 2 now !
Plus smoke detectors ONLY WORK for the SMELL of toast crumbs or cooking : not an actual fire ....
Sorry Penny - they did. Poorly maintained flues were the causes of frequent chimney fires which in timber framed houses in close proximity caused major fires (great fire of London). Also, due to poor ventilation many died or suffered from the effects of CO poisoning or the effects of incomplete combustion - carcinogenic particles such as soot.
And you 'know' the various things you assert 'as a matter of fact' that how ????? No one one knows the cause of the 'great fire of London ' and both the mythical cause and 'proximity' theory have both since been discredited . And for your information, the cause of fires historically have been due to sparks catching on a THATCH roof !
And it was extremely rare indeed for anyone to have died from that ! As to the carbon monoxide nonsense you tal;k , that is a risk associated with the draught excluding and GAS appliances of TODAY : You can't just make things up, against all common sense and lack of any evidence whatsoever !

With reference to thatch, try the Burgoyne Report; link can be found on Thatch Advice Centre website. Levels of CO from the incomplete combustion of solid fuels are far greater than gas - up to 400 times greater. In days of old where unseasoned wood was used due to availability, the dampness in the wood led to initial incomplete combustion leading to poisoning - especially withlarge cold flues. Babies were at risk after bathtime when laid in front of fire which had been tamped down.

People beware this was a clean chimney as could be seen from the complete absence of any soot, maybe we should look at the facts when considering cleaning ones own chimney ,1. Soot is very bad for humans to breath in, it causes cancer. 2. Soot is extremely fine and will invade your body hair lungs and room furnishings unless the soot is contained with a room tight airtight seal.3. The soot needs to be completely removed from the top of the register plate because soot is extremely flammable.4. Gloves , protective clothing and dust masks should be worn when working with soot.5. A chimney should be smoke tested after sweeping .Warren you seem like a nice fella but at the end of the day you are making light of a very difficult job by suggesting taping a supermarket bag up and sweeping through a hole in the bottom of a bag is an acceptable thing to do. I can assure you it is not. People beware that this video is not real life, if you follow this video and take Warrens advice I am afraid you will get yourself in a mess, I am afraid your carpets and furnishing will damaged and I very much doubt that your chimney will be cleaned properly. I can guarantee that it will not be safety checked on completion as Warren does not mention safety or smoke testing.Ohh and watch out you don't dislodge the pot or its cowl and end up with it killing next doors cat or worse.WARNING. if your stove has a flue liner fitted the suggestion in the video to use drain rods will certainly not work and ruin the liner. This method is inefficent you are missing lots of soot
I can see you have no chimney cowl your chimney doesn't seem to be lined with a stainless steel liner.
Doing your own chimeny will make your insurance fail if you house burns down too
I'm not convinced all the debris that falls onto your register plate gets removed with this method. Always best to remove the stove and register plate, and just deal with the mess the best you can. Huge fire risk otherwise...
Exactly! That inspection port is there to vacuum all the deposits that come down and sit on that plate. There’s 10x more sitting on that plate that can cause a chimney fire. It’s better to line the stove to the top with stainless steel and clean the liner from the stove to the top.
So many missed safety tips. No PPE. No control of soot. No need for a 6inch brush at all. The 16 will do the job better. This is such a bad explanation and demo.
My advice is if you have to cover yourself with disclaimers about pro sweeps it’s best left to professionals who know what to do. I go to so many DIYers who haven’t a clue what they’re doing and how they don’t kill people is beyond me.
I’d take down the video as it’s full of mistakes and errors.

oh what a laugh, I wouldn't recommend following this video. You will definately not save money , you'll end up setting fire or blocking up your chimney. There won't be much soot up there it'll be full of tar if you've been burning wood, which you won't even touch with that type of soft DIY store brush. No vacuum? What good is a hole at the bottom of the bag? The soot will fall out? that 6" brush in that 8-9 pot would be like throwing a sausage up the Albert hall if you see what I mean. Stove should be lined with 316 Ti liner system when installed into an existing masonry fireplace or chimney for better efficiency and for less creosote build up. Also where is your gloves fir creosote is a carcinogen easily absorbed into your bloodstream and where is your mask. Also a shop vacuum with Hepa filter for soot control

Why would you push a 6" brush through the pot? That is the most important part where the top is cold and soots up .you need to push that 16" brush through! What about a hoover? What about bends in the chimney. Bit of a farce this video....

You were actually turning the rods the wrong way....no gloves or face mask. Do not follow this guide....pay the £50 and get the work done properly plus a certificate for your insurance.
Exactly! If he had a chimney fire his house insurance would not cover him as he has no evidence of it being swept, unless he invoices himself?
Surprising how many of these videos don't mention to make absolutely sure you haven't used the fire recently so there's zero chance of heat in the flue. I'm Ireland, our fires and aga's are on almost constantly as they provide heat to the whole house and the hot water.
As he says these are left handed thread rods so he is 100% turning it the correct way. Plus a certificate is as good as toilet roll. Check with your insurance company. Most don’t require it.

Hire a professional. Don't do what this guy is does. Who mounts a plastic bag tapes it to the top with a big hole in the bottom. Smh
There are a few applications where the bag is needed, i use a kitchen trash bag when needed, on the disconnected flue, etc, etc..

I am a professional chimney sweep and I really must say that this video is promoting an extremely dangerous and illegal log burner installation. In the UK, we have laws governing the way log burners are installed and this installation is completely illegal and dangerous.
Its dangerous because it isn't lined to the top and this means that soot is able to fall onto the register plate ( the plate where the hatch you swept through ). This soot can collect over years and months and eventually ignite.
In the past month I have seen at least 4 chimney fires caused by installations like this. Your equipment is shoddy and you dont have adequate vacuum systems or cameras to view the top of the register plate and see if its clear of soot.
In short, you are promoting the use of an incorrect appliance and also encouraging people to sweep a similar installation that could actually make the matter worse by gathering more soot on the register plate ready to ignite.
I think you should edit this video and also contact HETAS to discuss why the person that installed your own log burner didn't follow lawful practise.

I had the stove professionally fitted (so I thought) 3 years ago. They also said there was no need for the chimney to be lined as the chimney was in good condition. Had the regulations changed on this?
The regulations haven't changed, its always been illegal. Common sense tells you that this is dangerous for all the reasons I told you. Your log burner has not been installed properly and is as dangerous as a gas boiler that isn't installed properly, it can cause fires and carbo monoxide poisoning. Ive seen several chimney fires from installations like this recently and also people with their carbon monoxide alarms bleeping. Log burners are designed to be balanced correctly with a flue pipe, otherwise they dont work properly and the draw created is random at best.
If anyone tries this at home they will have their house and lungs covered in soot, and their chimney will still be lined with flammable creosote.
Is that stove certified for an alcove installation .. with the side of that /stove/unit being less than 20 inches from that pine facing .. I wouldnt have it in my home .. your asking for trouble .. please leave it to the professionals mate .. your not doing any favours to trivialize a trade which now requires a certificate of qualification to perform..

I'd suggest reading up on the number of dangerous chemicals found it soot and make sure you wear suitable PPE equipment. This is totally irresponsible advice being given here. DO NOT do this

Warren Nash there are numerous nasty chemical compounds found in it ( including 20 different known carcegens) . Some of which can be absorbed through the skin as well as by inhalation Are you happy to be promoting exposure like this ?

Please please please do not do not copy any of this mans video. Unlike his spotlessly clean chimney yours will actually have soot in it. Call a professional or call a carpet cleaner for the next day. You will cover your suit, curtains ornaments in soot. Call a professional chimney sweep with a good reputation.

Hi +shedfan just to let you know I cleaned the chimney after 1 year of use from the stove. It's a cleanburn stove which might explain why there was less soot than you expected.
warren you obviously don't have any idea about combustion and the products thereof. that chimney was sootless because it had either been thoroughly swept prior to your video being shot or I has never been used as a solid fuel chimney.
