  • Welcome to Episode 121 - I’m so excited to share this episode with you because Steph was able to line up one of my personal favorites historians (and I’m quite jealous), Chris Skidmore. I know Chris from his amazing biography on Edward VI, but today he’ll be answering YOUR questions on Richard III, Henry VII and the Battle of Bosworth (among other things). Stick around for the entire episode because we got the exclusive on his next book!

I found that interview incredibly interesting - and the proof is that I am off to buy some of Chris' books. A very well spoken and interesting speaker. I love the idea of the title of the Henry VII biography as "The Fragile Dynasty" as I think both Henry VII and Henry VIII were very aware of the impermanence of their line. Great listen!

When the illegitimate line from John of Gaunt was legitimized there was a caveat that those people could not inherit the throne. So Henry Tudor had no legitimate 'claim' to the throne; he got that through marriage to Elizabeth of York. Henry Tudor obtained the throne through right of conquest.

He got it by right of conquest, no different than Henry iii, EdwardIV or William the Conquerer.
Albeit, many a Yorkist helped finance and fight to depose Richard III - who they considered a usurper who had terrorized and murdered his way to the throne - including the eleven year old Edward V (whom many Yorkists also considered the rightful king), and his nine year old brother, Richard, his namesake, as these were Richard’s own nephews he’d sworn to protect.

@aimeebrito1565 Just to piggyback on your statement, Gaunt had his Beaufort clan legitimized 3 times. First by Pope Boniface IX, then by Richard II, & confirmed by Henry IV. The line which everyone jumps at, 'excepta dignitate regali,' was a later add on; it was clearly not part of the original document that was ratified in Parliament. The line is squeezed in between two other words and the handwriting is different. For that portion of the document to be legal, the original act would need to have been repealed by Parliament and a new act, containing those words, would need to be passed. No such event occurred. Therefore, the Beauforts were legitimized & allowed to hold "all honours, dignities, pre-eminences, estates, degrees and offices public and private whatsoever," which includes the dignitate regali.

@@TudorsDynasty Wonderful. Then I can tell here that I was listening to another show of yours, and someone said "Margaret Beaufort", and I immediately saw her climbing the stair with the cleaver! I burst out laughing! Thank you for that, dear lady.
