Somehow, Amazon equates "most purchased" and/or "most reviewed" with BEST.
    It doesn't work that way.
That being said, I recommended the AT-LP60 just last Christmas. It's a good starter table, fully automatic, which is also somewhat able to be upgraded. Pair it with some modest powered speakers and you actually have a good starter system for well under $300.
    Great video, Frank.

Amazon's recommendations are not hand-picked by a team of expert audiophiles; they are put together by a marketing team which is looking at the products that most people are searching for, buying, and giving positive ratings and reviews. Like you, I am by no means recommending that people buy these players. But the Crosley Cruiser-type suitcase players have been on the market since 2012. That's an entire decade! So if they were really as bad as all the "experts" (who have never actually owned or used one) claim, surely by now we would've seen that reflected in a decline in record sales and interest in vinyl -- but instead, it keeps growing every year. So, you have to admit that despite their shortcomings, they are a net benefit to the vinyl community.

As always, I enjoyed the video.
I still recommend the LP60 to newbies, as my first choice. It’s not too expensive, it’s fully auto, and most importantly, doesn’t require any real setup. Bungling counterweight and tracking force, and anti skate, aren’t obvious to someone new to the format.
They hear sound, so to them it’s working, while potentially tearing through the media and stylus unbeknownst to them.
End of the day, while there are 100s of turntables that are better than an LP60, the unit isn’t going to destroy any records; it’s fully auto, so they can see the whole operation happen, and know that it’ll cue up right, and return itself to the cradle on its own, and for the price…they can upgrade without feeling like they spent too much on something they didn’t know much about, and now feel like they have to live with it for awhile.
I know I didn’t know what I wanted, or could even expect of a table when I found my way back to vinyl. I waited longer than most to do proper gear upgrades, but when I did…I knew what was available at my desired price point, I knew how to read and understand a spec sheet, and after seeking out several RUclips reviews and VS vids I felt confident in my chosen upgrade path. I would have screwed this up so bad, had I tried to do it when I was new?
If they have a budget and wish to dive in a little deeper, great! But. My hope is that they have a friend or someone they know who is knowledgeable/experienced enough to help them set it up properly to begin with.
    My two cents.

When I was a youth drooling over a prospectus more features meant more better, but fully auto now has no meaning to me. To me a "record player" plays records straight from the box - it therefore has to have an amplifier and speaker built in.
A turntable is different to a record player - it can only play records once hooked up to an amplifier and a set of speakers.
Nothing wrong with record players - they have their place - but none are a match for a turntable, amp and speakers.

8:44 looks like it also has that metal rod up in the air to hold the fishing line for the anti-skating weight, so that's good.
I would recommend the ATLP120 or similar.
Those are decent starter turntables made by Hanpin - the first turntable I bought was a Reloop RP-2000MK3, which was basically the same thing as an ATLP120.
And now, 15 years later, they're still being made because they offer such good value for money.

I listen to a ton of DIY artists & they & their labels can get by with selling them for as little as $10-12...i would estimate the average I pay around $15-20...sometimes less, sometimes upward to $25....but there's no other reason other than greed to charge more. Especially when there's thousands or more pressed since the more you have pressed the cheaper each unit is...& the DIY artists & bands make only a few hundred or a couple thousand copies & still sell them for that cheap.

I got a Lenco L3808 entry level direct drive turntable. It is one of the numerous Audio Technica lookalikes but I was tempted by the direct drive over the belt driven as budget end belt drives can be a bit flaky when it comes to speed. It had decent reviews and came with an entry level AT cartridge which I upgraded to an AT-VM95ML. The whole lot came to about £300 which is $520 in Canadian dollars. The entry level cartridge would have been OK for a complete newbie and would have cut the cost down by half. It has proper counterbalance and speed adjustment which mine didn't require changing because it was on the money at both 33 and 45, but some reviewers had said theirs ran a little fast. The cartridges track at a very nice 2g and the anti-skate seems to do the job. It is fully manual, which puts off some people, but I honestly don't find that a problem. It is a more than capable deck which paired with a Technics receiver and some Mission speakers sounds pretty good to me.

I've recommended many times the Target brand HEYDAY turntable. I'm not sure if they still sell it in stores, but you can still find them on the secondary market. Shame no-one will make re-pops of these types... because they'd be better than everyone else's, and everyone would want one. Especially when they learn the stylus can be upgraded to a true diamond-style, which sounds far-better than the sapphire model! =:D

We got him one of these portables with some vinyls for Christmas. Did we know we were getting a "beginners" turntable - it allows him to have it near him whether he's in bed or sitting on the couch, or at times when he prefers, on the floor. He can get it out without help - and while it doesn't have the great quality of his turntables from his teens/young adult years in the 70's/80's - it is sufficient for his needs and has brought him some smiles.

I had the AT-LP60X for about a week, it's not pathetic for a starter turntable but is very light and plasticky-the lack of build quality put me off a bit, especially coming from a 1982 Sanyo given to me by my Mum (great turntable, I still have it, forgotten the exact make, though). I read in a few places that a good rule of thumb for TT weight is anything over 5kg. I now have a Sony PS-HX500, it's down from £400 to £300 on Amazon UK at the moment, I see. The design is probably Marmite to some, it's very sleek and minimal, no automatic tonearm return which isn't a big deal for me but may be a deal-breaker for some. Adjustable tonearm counterweight, anti-skate and headshell, it sounds really good, especially paired with the Sony STR-DH190 Stereo Receiver (about the same price as the turntable, iirc?). The PS-HX500 has won a bunch of awards since it came out from dedicated Hi-Fi websites and publications so that was why I went for it, though I did consider both the Rega Planar (?) and the Fluance you mentioned in the video. It also had around 150+ 4 star reviews on Amazon. It has fantastic bass response with no "overhang", sits on the ever-so-slightly trebly side of neutral and offers a wonderfully detailed sound. I got some fairly cheap passive Wharfdale "bookshelf" speakers--you would need bloody big bookshelves for these, though, they're big and really heavy and complement my set-up nicely.

Essentially it is one, dual voice coil, woofer with two tweeters where the tweeters face in different directions to give a stereo effect. Separation is not great but it does work.

My entry-level separates turntable was a Sony PSJ10 at the end of the 90's. I think you can still get them new, and mine was a solid workhorse for a good 10 years or more. Certainly very good value, but you do need an amp and speakers or a midi hifi with aux inout to use it, which were common when I first had mine.
Techmoan did a review of last year's suitcase models and I think they all have the same basic single-unit tonearm mechanism (hence the similarity). Whoever licenses the mechanism can spec up the case, graphics, logos etc. but they are essentially all the same unit under the skin, as are some of the cheap standalone turntables. The marketing brand doesn't make the electronics inside.

I saw that video, you can actually buy the tonearm and "platter" mechanism for 20 quid, roughly.
I love my Sony PS-HX500. Great sound. Only wish it had a higher platter but it doesn't cause any problems. I have it paired with a nice big Sony STR-DH190 receiver.

For the AT-LP60x.. You might want to upgrade the belt to a vivid belt.

On that note, just unboxed a U-Turn Audio, Orbit Basic turntable for a stereo cabinet refurb project. Selected the U-Turn in part due to your review and the dimensions of the turntable. I ordered the cue lever and built in pre-amp as add on items. I have connected it to a Dayton audio amp and bookshelf speakers. I didn’t factor in the RCA jacks protruding from the back of the turntable so I will need to drill or cut some additional holes for access. As it will fit tight in the cabinet, I may not be able to use the dust cover. But the cabinet does have a lid. Will share photos on the Facebook page. Great show. Thanks. Sorry to ramble.

in Europe, Rega and Pro-Ject are hard to beat value for money turntables up to a certain level beyond 1000€ where the pool of choices gets much bigger. I know for many 2000-3000€ is impossible money but I am amazed by some of the entry level Mass Turntables from Acoustic Solid or Transrotor you can get for that money. They have the same perfect design and reliability like the reference models and are sometimes scary close to the top players. Even an entry level Linn is affordable for many and over time you can upgrade it to the max possible if you want to. Such a nice playing field with so many choices and even more opinions.

Here's a question though, one thing I sell a lot of is the old fashioned record CHANGERS... if you have a mess of 45s, you almost NEED one to make it tolerable. Are there no new offerings in record changers? I've found that you can equip them with nice lightweight Ortophon cartridges, even if they don't have a counterweight, and when properly set up, they are fun and don't damage the records at all... maybe a negligible amount of wear to the labels on your 45s, as that's what makes contact when they're dropped.

Any recordplayer for $50 to get started is fine. The crosley/victrola suitcase players are all the same 1980's mechanism with the same lousy needle, ceramic cartridge made in the same factories in China. Are they good? No. Are they bad? At that $50 price point, they are servicable to figure out if you want to have vinyl in your music library. Don't spend more than $50 for this basic mechanism. It comes in many brand names and packages that can go as high as $200 depending on "features" that are silly like bluetooth receivers and slightly nicer cases. This channel makes excellent recommendations for a range of tables once you feel the need to climb out of the basement and get a better sound from your records. If you only have $100, buy the suitcase and $50 worth of vinyl. If you like it, start saving up because you are going to love it with a better table and gear.

Yeah it almost seems like somebody paid some product placement fees to be on that list. I am far from being a turntable expert, but Ut seems like people would be better off to find an older well maintained used table… I picked up a Technics SL-QD33 for around $60 a couple of years ago. I know it’s not the top of the line model, but it’s a work horse.. hasn’t failed me yet. I think I’ve said this before, but I’ll say it again. It perplexes me why nobody is making a decent direct drive model, that’s fully automatic.

The biggest problem with these self contained "suitcase" style players is the factory set tracking weight is usually around 7 grams...which is effectively grinding the groove into trash....I know they provide a cheaper alternative for vinyl enthusiasts but they will destroy your
records...and at today's prices 😱. My main table is an ancient Technics SL1100...but I also have a Fluance RT81 (pretty good..not great) and an Audio Technica AT-140LP with an upgraded cartridge (ATVM95SH) and power cable (sounds pretty damn good)...I spend a lot of energy and time in keeping my record collection in good playing condition(cleaning, replacing inner sleeves with anti stat sleeves) etc...I can't imagine playing any of them on a cheap and poorly setup all in one solution. Just my 2 cents.

We all have different needs, budgets and desires. And as long as you’re enjoying the music, you’ve chosen well. That being said, the article doesn’t say that. Those Crowley / Victrolas don't last. Play records 2 or 3 hours a day, and the motor will die within 2 years max. They are good for starters, since maybe some will discover they were just jumping on a bandwagon, and don't really like the vinyl experience. It's good to have a low-cost way in to see if you're truly into it. For me personally, even if I wasn't into vinyl at all, I want to watch tv/ bluray and RUclips etc with a high quality beefy multi-channel system with good subs. In my case the turntable is not mutually exclusive from that, it's just part of that whole listening experience. I would hope having a nice turntable and receiver / speakers, would invite more people to hook those receivers up to everything. My outdoor cameras with audio, reel-to-reel, several turntables, 2 computers, bluray, mixer, studio etc all run through the receiver and tv. HDMI and ARC are the best things to ever happen to audio

With a bit of reading you could tell they are a cheap product, and like you say we had those types of player back in the 70/80's when we first started playing records. Maybe Amazon are looking for that younger buyer with little experience but want to play vinyl.
