    I've been getting tired of Windows 10 but Windows 11 has pushed me over the edge, I am currently running Pop OS on my laptop but now looking at running Manjaro for a bit. Also for those reading this is it normal to move from distro to distro in the beginning of moving to Linux?

    Regarding MS Teams - one of the last apps you discuss: it runs well, yet it lacks multiple features. For instance, you cannot share the video output of a specific Window (you can only share the entire desktop), you are limited to seeing a maximum of four Webcam outputs simultaneously, there is no together mode, and there is no support for blurred backgrounds.
    There are clear indications that Microsoft is purposely limiting the range of features available on Linux. To give an example: about a year ago, Microsoft temporarily enabled 3*3 grids for video chats, so you could see up to nine people at the same time, yet after one or two weeks the feature was disabled it again. Interestingly, there are reports that for a brief while blurred backgrounds worked, too.
    A popular thread imploring Microsoft to keep the Linux client up-to-date ('Keep the Linux Client up to date with the latest features') was locked in May. A new one with the same title has since been started, yet it hasn't gained the same traction. I think many people have given up, to be honest.

    • @binku09
      @binku09 2 года назад +3

      That could definitely be a reason why Microsoft is doing it. After all, you don't wanna give too much to your competition which has a small but strong base supporting it....

    For those that have a fairly high end system (mine is a Ryzen 3700x, 32GB Ram) the easiest way to integrate windows is to run in a VM, built with KVM. It will need 2-3 days of research to optimize it for performance, but after that you will have the whole Windows ecosystem in a safe self contained environment. I even use MS Teams for video conferencing through KVM, that’s how good the performance is.

    I use a combination of WPS and LO to replace Word and PPT. I use WPS for when compatibility is a necessity (like dealing with Word documents with complex layout, or dealing with doc without x), and I use LO when writing documents from scratch or when I don't care about exact layout compatibility. For Excel and Visio, I use LO exclusively. Also WPS comes with updated MS core fonts.

    I've been using Linux since I built my first desktop computer back in 2019, started with Linux Mint then switched to Manjaro early this year. I still keep a W10 laptop for whenever I need to use it for whatever reason. I'll be installing Linux Mint on that old laptop once Microsoft ends support for W10 and only use Windows if my next job requires me to use W11. Otherwise, at least for home use, I'll be using Linux, it's just been getting easier to use every year as I've gotten used to it. My own home uses are gaming, media server, writing and web browsing, and I don't need Microsoft's ecosystem for what I do.

    Great video, teams makes collaborating using Linux in an office365 tenancy easier, but your font advice is pure gold! Thank you! I also discovered the Synology hack! For one drive. However, not all models will run the cloud sync widget thingy! Soooo. I run an old win pc on the network which syncs our teams individual one drives to the nas. I then back it up via rsync / compression / encryption to a remotish and hard disconnected Ubuntu file server. Not ideal but it works for our small team spread through Europe, Asia, Africa and soon the USA. The beauty is that my heath-Robinson setup means that the OneDrive data is backed up and untouchable should Microsoft’s platform or one of our team be compromised. Thanks again for the video.

    Netgear routers with a USB drive actually work really well with both Windows and Linux networks, and even play nice with mixed networks that include Microsoft, Mac OS, and Linux devices, and their iOS/Android management app for their routers is really good in my experience, so if you're running a small business or home office, if your ISP lets you use 3rd party routers, grab a Netgear gateway device that supports the standard for your ISP. If you live in the US, you can even get out of paying those annoying monthly or annual equipment rental fees, and get the actual advertised price, with only taxes and nominal fees on top.

OpenOffice I'm often more than a little frustrated by the choices Libre has made. That said both Libre and OO seem to be able to open most MS stuff and I don't care if the formating is screwed up when I open it as the info is what's important. obviously I'm not in an industry that sticks to 'it must be x' but still I don't understand why we need to worry about this. @HDSQ 2 года назад

      @@Someone-mn1sx I said if you don't like windows then WSL2 doesn't help because it's still Windows. Obviously if you just want some Linux tools then it's great (in fact I used it for well over a year and loved it), but it's far from comparable to a full Linux desktop, which is what this video is about.

    • @Someone-mn1sx
      @Someone-mn1sx 2 года назад

      @@HDSQ Oh I misunderstood. Well I know that but devices generally work better. Drivers are more up to date, etc. You can remove all tracking with things like W10Privacy or Blackbird. Classic start menu is completely free and is 7 style with modern colors and transparency. I used to be a Debian user but it's so limited and the programs I use don't run nearly as well in VMs as natively, so I went back to Windows. For devices I don't use daily, like a raspberry pi or anything robotic then I'd use Linux over Windows, but for a daily driver it's Windows with WSL.

    At work, I have to use Windows. I also use MS Office (alongside Libre Office) and I can say, that compatibility is the least important problem. MS Office is a king when it comes to tools. I could write a book, what is missing in Libre and other apps. MS Office is not replaceable (online version is a shadow of the Windows native app). However, LO is the second best. The rest office apps may have some better compatibility, but when it comes to usage, they are merely a child toys, not suitable for normal work, unless you need only basics of the basics, on a school level. At work, it's just not enough, not nearly enough. Macros, VBS, advanced filters, superior unctions (that don't exist outside MS Office, like xlookup) - those are needed but not offered by other apps, so MS Office is just the best. I say it with a heavy heart, but there is no real comparison. MS Office number one, then long, long nothing, LO maybe number 20, the rest would place on thousands or further other places. So basically outside MS Office and LO, other apps are a joke for me, suitable maybe for kids or computer illiterate.
    As to Teams, we use it, but I don't like it. It's heavy, slow, counter-intuitive, has many issues, limited in many ways and allows for working with one thing at a time, so when you edit a file, you can't see chat messages or do anything else (unless I'm missing something). It's just clunky.

    Video suggestion: "Native Windows gaming vs Windows VM gaming" using Gnome Boxes (flatpak or GTK). I have never been a gamer but Linux gaming is a common weak point complaint from new-to-Linux folks. Most Linux users probably have a Win 10 or Win 7 license for installing Windows in VM. So, if VM gaming is still quite usable, it might be a single-use solution for Linux gamers instead of more complicated things like wine.

    I'm still waiting to switch back to Linux until Microsoft Edge for Linux comes out of beta and has the "read aloud from here" feature, which it doesn't right now. No other browser has as good of voices and integrates so seamlessly with the content of the webpage than Edge. My criteria us that I specify a start point but no end point or selection is required. It should read aloud the entire read of the page if I don't stop it. It also must highlight each word that it reads aloud on the page as it goes. Now other browser does this other than Edge on Windows and MacOS.

    I have been considering possibly switching my business to Linux. I've been looking for a easy user friendly switch, and zorian looks promising what's your takes.
    We have Microsoft Office 365, which is a mist have program. we use it for our email service and calander for shared calander for appointment scheduling services. we must all be able to see appointments, especially at the front desk, who are scheduling most of the consultation appointments and me I scheduling installs of products.
    I've tried other office programs and now work as well as office for our needs.
    I want to wean away from windows I don't like the direction the are heading all the bloat ware the spy ware all the ads and privacy concerns I want to be in control of my business and my office computers.
    I also need something that is easy for non tech savvy employees who are used to windows.
