Hi guys, my name is Jason Leung, I am a 4th Dan in Shotokan Karate! In today's karate lesson, we are learning kata Heian Sandan.
Heian Sandan is a very unique kata, with unique timing, and techniques. It is one of the few kata that you learn to crescent kick. Kata Heian Sandan also features "kiba dachi" (horse stance), and various other stances making this form one of the most dyanamic in Shotokan Karate.

Because of my age (45) I had to fight a 5th Kyu and also someone who was previously Shodan and had returned after some years of absence. I was scared for sure. One little interesting detail about katas is they always start and finish at the same position. Between this and certain recurring movement patterns, it really helped me to memorise the turns and movement order. Given the advanced katas I've been learning recently, it's weird to think that I once found Heian Shodan disorientating and hard to follow. 🥴

@2:58 I do jka shotokan and we don’t do it as a crescent kick. We do it as a stomp. Bunkai beingup like a Mae Geri then stomp down on their foot and backfist to the face
