Final Days of WWII: A Crumbling Reich and Its Civilian Tragedy I SLICE HISTORY | FULL DOCUMENTARY

In the final phase of the war, the dictatorship ruthlessly throws younger and younger generations onto the front line in order to pursue its insane dream of final victory. The conflict has long since been lost: the Red Army has been on German soil in the east for several months, while in the west the Americans crossed the Rhine at the beginning of March. The episode takes a look at the various theaters of war in the spring of 1945 and shows the increasingly hopeless situation in which the Wehrmacht finds itself. The dramatic situation in which the civilian population throughout Europe found itself at this time is also highlighted.

The iconic image of the flag being raised on Iwo Jima is repeatedly described here as "only a reenactment." This is FALSE. It was NOT a reenactment, and it was NOT staged. (Photographer Joe Rosenthal almost missed the shot completely - hardly the trait of a "staged reenactment.") Yes, this is the second flag raising, but it was intentionally meant to replace the first, smaller flag which was barely visible from a distance. The Marines also wanted to ensure that they maintained ownership of the first flag before some brass figure (Forrestal) stepped in to grab it for himself.
