You're not alone, if I have a choice I'm 100% choosing cloth every time. The one thing I like about leather is that the kids don't wreck it as quickly. 😂

I'm with you bud! I live in Perth, Western Australia and on the 40 + degrees celcius days that we can get here, the black leather seats that a lot of vehicles here have in them is not practical. You could damn near fry an egg on car seats here in summer!

I love 90s and early 2000s car. Had a 02 Crown Vic for the longest time, and with it I have almost driven it coast to coast. Something about cars of that era is just so endearing.

After I sold my Rav 4 that was identical to yours I couldn’t deviate from the basic concept of what your videos are all about. I bought a 2003 4Runner that is the younger big brother of the Rav. Imperial green mica with grey sides cladding. Is exactly what I look into my cars. Easy to fix, utilitarian, bulletproof 90 technology. If someone opens their doors too hard, no problem, my plastic grey fender will take care of your door edge. The 4Runner drove the same distance to the moon and yes! No noises in the suspension. Great video.
When I first saw my (to be) Subaru in 2004, it felt so modern and futuristic... Heated seats, CD changer, automatic dual zone climate control. Now that it's mine it feels almost retro: the heated seats are controlled by knobs that don't 'forget' their positions, the CD changer has a button for each CD instead of touchscreen menus, even the electronic HVAC controls are still manual buttons and knobs. There are no buttons to bump on the steering wheel and accidentally change the radio, only the horn. The late 90s and early 2000s were really the sweet spot of cars you could drive wearing mittens.
Yeah man, 90's cars we're much simpler. I still have my 1997 Ford Expedition. It doesn't insult me for not wearing a seatbelt when I'm moving cars around from our single driveway lol.
My first car I bought at 17 was a ‘99 Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ. Had 107k miles on it, I’m in Buffalo, NY so we’re notorious for rusty frames from all the road salt we put down in the winter. Previous owner inherited it from his grandma who lived down south and only drove it for a year before he decided to upgrade, so it was almost rust free. Interior and exterior were mint, never had a rattle, speaker issues, electrical issues. Dashboard and center console was so simple, had like 5 buttons on it. It just looked and felt so durable. I could take it off road, no issues. I agree the older cars just feel better, more simple and have better quality materials that stand the test of time. Finally sold it last year nearly 5 years later when it started to have some major reoccurring problems with the head gasket, I wanted something more reliable as I finished up college this past year. I got a ‘12 Toyota Highlander, 59k miles in May this year and have fallen in love with Toyota. Very reliable, I want to own this until I run it into the ground.
I will definitly buy a RAV 4 mk1 later, I'm excited to drive one through the plains and hills offroad:). Currently I have a 1998 Volkswagen Polo 6N with the massive 1.0 Liter motor, with whooping 50 Hp😆, but I love this car, it isn't fast or anything, but the interior e.g. is quality wise damn good. Much better than in the Golf 4 or the later vehicles. Simple, durable, does what it should. That's all I need💯
At 245 lbs, I just had to have the seat reupholstered in my 95 Tacoma. I bought the truck new and it now has 318 K miles on it. It wasn't so much the fabric as the rubber was just flat. Sure feels good now. Think I'll keep it a few more years.
I have a '94 Toyota Xtra cab pickup with 5-speed and 345,000 miles on. Toyota's build quality in that era was definitely second to none. The interior of that truck is all business but also comfortable enough to make 10 - 12 hr trips no problem. And... it averages 25 mpg (US). No rust, no squeaks, no rattles. I'll be keeping it for a while longer!
My camper truck is an ‘89 F150 with the all red interior with the full width bench seat. Still in great shape but sometimes I think I ‘d prefer the split seat with the fold down arm rest/cubby. Maybe I’ll come across one in a junkyard someday. I’ve done out the camper area with red fabric and carpet to match. Apart from Toyotas, I also found the old Audis from the 80s had really good, hardwearing, yet plush, fabric on the seats. 👍🏻
I've got a first gen, 2003 Highlander with the 3.0L V6, same as what you describe with your RAV4, zero creaks or rattles in the interior even when on dirt roads, zero flex in the door panels, sound system still sounds like new, so impressed with the build quality in that era of vehicle
I gotta say, i love my 2017 Honda civic. But when i go to make a project car or an overlanding vehicle here soon. I would love a beetle or maybe just get a 25 year old toyota or nissan to offroad with. The connection you get with an old car just feels so satisfying.
I feel like the only thing separating an old car from a new one is the radio, threw a atoto double din in my '02 celica and its already way better then most cars "infotainment"
I love simple interiors. Thats why I love my 2022 Tacomas interior. It reminds me of my 1993 Toyota Pickups interior meaning not fancy but I have everything I need inside.

I missed my 1999 Rav. One of the best car I have owned. I’m happy I’m still driving my 04 Rav4 now. I also have a 13 and 16 ravs for my wife and son. Great cars 👍🏻👍🏻
The sound deadening material can make a huge difference. Just make sure you do a lot of research on where to put it, and how much to use. A little bit goes a long way, when people use a ton of it I think it's probably overkill and has diminishing returns.

While I find the older Camry interiors a little depressing, I really like the Avalon and Solara interiors. They had a lot of issues with dashes cracking, but I think the designs are reasonably timeless and hold up well today. The ride quality and smoothness of these cars is amazing too.
I'm really enjoying your videos and your viewpoint. I drive a 2010 Hyundai Santa Fe as my daily. I also have a 1987 Ford XR3i cabriolet for summer fun. My wife has a 2021 Fiat 500. I love driving all of these for different reasons. Your Rav looks really well, I would have to attack the front bumper greyness though.
Good question! The most comparable would be the 1st gen CRV, which I have owned and modified. I am less familiar with the 2nd Gen CRV but it seems to be a reputable vehicle. It comes down to personal preference for me with size, looks, and era -without diving too much into mechanical specs. The 2nd gen may be a little less rugged and more city-like.
Man, I love how the clean the paint is on your RAV! I think I may get my paint redone once I’ve finished my mechanical overhauls. Deciding whether to DIY or pay a professional
The only thing I've found nicer in newer cars are the cup holders. My 90s vehicles have flimsy cup holders while my 2016 Nissan minivan has 10 solid cupholders. Everything else about the interior of the Nissan, though, is terrible. My old Corolla's interior is in much better shape even though it's 20 years older.
I just got a ‘98 RAV4 the other day. It’s been 15 years since I last drove a manual and I missed it so much. I got the one with the sunroof. Not sure if that’s the only difference between mine and yours. The rest all look the same.
Agree that the zenith of automotive design (driving dynamics, operator functionality with excellent durability) was passed after 2010. Imho it was the environmental and safety regulatory overreach that caused the issues today……i.e. very heavy and expensive tech complex vehicles with high depreciation due to obsolescence issues of systems.
B quiet is like dynamat but way cheaper. Recommend doing the wheel arches under front carpet and behind plastic inner quarter panel. This will almost eliminate tire noise. Can do inner door panels to improve audio acoustics and reduce door tin sound when shutting it
Sound Dampening yes! It makes almost any car better, and a little goes a long way. You only need to cover large panels at a 50-60% coverage rate. The gains for full coverage are minuscule.
Additionally, older cloth interiors are so underrated. Leather heats up in the summer, is cold as ice in the winter and cracks overtime. Cloth is much more durable and tends to offer a more cushy feel than leather.
My newest vehicle is a 2008 Honda Fit Sport.. all the amenities.. A/C and cruise control. I grew up driving my 2000 Wrangler, 4 cyl/5 spd no A/C, soft top so basically everything is a Mercedes after that 😂
Owning a vehicle is a losing proposition....best you can do is wisely manage the decline...and buying an older car is very wise....the depreciation is mostly over with...you just need a good mechanic sometimes...and you need to fix some stuff yourself...new vehicles will cause a lot of finacial stress....you won't build wealth buying newer cars....its real dumb...
I think I'm being told to keep my car, a 2012 Toyota Sienna. You videos started to pop up when i started to look at new car reviews. I'm 44 and never had a car last this long.
I can’t seem to find anything better than my 1998 RAV4. At least that’s newer. If I could just find a 4RUNNER with a locking rear differential from around 2000 at a reasonable price that would be great. Or even better an other RAV4. But a 2 door also with differential. Those differentials really turn night into day with a push of a button
I beg to differ on the leg room in the back for passengers, because I felt CRAMPED as a 12 year old lol All in all,, a cute little car. My Mom and I simply called ours "Ravie".
The heated switch in my 1998 Jeep XJ has a switch. Nothing to go wrong there. Touch screens will be useless, and make the vehicle useless. I really doubt any aftermarket manufacturers are going to step in and make any. So you will be relying on wrecks and broken down vehicles in the future. An enterprising person will starting working on an adapter that will be able to plug into an iPad to keep vehicle communications going in the future.
Look at the cars of today..they seem more like an electronic gadget..the charm of these kind of cars cannot be replicated by electronic gadget and overly designed cars of today.
The sad thing is that with age all the plastic used is gonna get brittle. Same with engine components. And there is basically nothing to stop that from happening. You see that currently on the first generation Lexus LS. That car is known to be built proof, but these days they have more and more problems. Just due to age.

Cloth interiors are premium in the East world, and it makes more sense. Premium to them translate to plush and comfortable, leather isn't that.
Totally agree, I love old interiors...especially when they are all plástic without simulations of wood...

The cup holder struggle is real haha. There is one in the centre console in this RAV4 that works surprisingly well.

Owning a vehicle is a losing proposition....best you can do is wisely manage the decline...and buying an older car is very wise....the depreciation is mostly over with...you just need a good mechanic sometimes...and you need to fix some stuff yourself...new vehicles will cause a lot of finacial stress....you won't build wealth buying newer cars....its real dumb...

I think I'm being told to keep my car, a 2012 Toyota Sienna. You videos started to pop up when i started to look at new car reviews. I'm 44 and never had a car last this long.

I can’t seem to find anything better than my 1998 RAV4. At least that’s newer. If I could just find a 4RUNNER with a locking rear differential from around 2000 at a reasonable price that would be great. Or even better an other RAV4. But a 2 door also with differential. Those differentials really turn night into day with a push of a button

I beg to differ on the leg room in the back for passengers, because I felt CRAMPED as a 12 year old lol All in all,, a cute little car. My Mom and I simply called ours "Ravie".
The heated switch in my 1998 Jeep XJ has a switch. Nothing to go wrong there. Touch screens will be useless, and make the vehicle useless. I really doubt any aftermarket manufacturers are going to step in and make any. So you will be relying on wrecks and broken down vehicles in the future. An enterprising person will starting working on an adapter that will be able to plug into an iPad to keep vehicle communications going in the future.

Look at the cars of today..they seem more like an electronic gadget..the charm of these kind of cars cannot be replicated by electronic gadget and overly designed cars of today.
The sad thing is that with age all the plastic used is gonna get brittle. Same with engine components. And there is basically nothing to stop that from happening. You see that currently on the first generation Lexus LS. That car is known to be built proof, but these days they have more and more problems. Just due to age.

The trick is you got to find one that has been garaged all it's life. My 96 XJ Jeep is one of them and the interior is like new...
The key fobs and push button start stuff is also terrible. Give me an old fashioned key.
