  • Motorcyclist staffer Zack Courts is always arriving to office after his commute with a bunch of opinions about the bike he’s riding. Too much this, not enough that, and occasionally has some decent insights. We thought some of it might help consumers or entertain enthusiasts, so we strapped a camera and microphone to the side of his helmet and told him to turn it on when he leaves his house. A lot of him talking in his helmet is complaining about drivers, yelling at red lights, and wondering why billboards aren’t more expensive. But sometimes he actually talks about the bike, and those are the parts we keep. Got a bike you would like to see discussed? Let us know and we’ll send him home on that one next.

    It’s no secret we’re always trying to get our staff to work a little harder. Especially the ones that always seem to have too much to say. “Write it down!” we always shout at each other. Zack Courts is a classic case, always arriving to office after his commute with a bunch of opinions about the bike he’s riding. Too much this, not enough that, and occasionally has some decent insights that we thought might help consumers or entertain enthusiasts.

      Kevin Van de voorde out of the 650 category Honda’s CBR650F smashes the Ninja 650. Bummed Honda doesn’t make a big displacement sport tourer anymore, the VFR800 lacked the power the Ninja 1000 has, Honda dominates the middleweight class where Kawi’s got the heavyweight. Honda also seems to have overall better fit and finish to...

    • @sleeper.simulant7327
      @sleeper.simulant7327 5 лет назад

      MGTOW DIRT BIKER I can agree with that. Yamaha can build a gem of a engine. If you ever follow one though you’ll have a epileptic seizure from how bad the tail light vibrates on a Yamaha lol. Kawi builds a quality product, solid engine choices, reliable. I would agree that there fit and finish I behind only Honda in terms of the big Japanese brands, I went to a Yamaha/Kawi dealer and sat on both. The MT07 is definitely the more popular choice around my area cause they are cheap, but the z650/ninja 650 felt better.

  • @maniakaz
    @maniakaz 7 лет назад +11

    Even the older N1k's needed taller gearing. I geared up 1 tooth in the front and switched to a 190/55 (from 190/50) rear tire on my 2k12. The combination really made the bike much nicer for commutes on the freeway in the southwest US where speed limits can be 70-75mph. Even with it geared up it has no issues picking up the front end in the first couple gears with just the throttle.

    • @AkaAndyKnuckles
      @AkaAndyKnuckles 7 лет назад +1

      maniakaz Thinking about getting a 190/55 instead of the 190/50 on my old Yamaha MT01. How was the difference?

    • @iTxip
      @iTxip 7 лет назад +1

      you will find it much more flickable, and you will have better grip when leaned, if you do a lot of straight line stuff (motorways etc...) you may square them if they are soft, but since that is a heavy bike maybe something in the sport touring range, try something like the metzeler z8, angel GT, PR4 in 190/55, the first miles you may feel it leans faster than you like but eventually you will like the handling better

    • @maniakaz
      @maniakaz 7 лет назад +1

      Steering was lighter (more flickable) and as a bonus, it's easier to install than the 190/50 (I went back to a 190/50 on my last tire since I needed it fast as I got a cut in my rear tire). It also effects the speedo/odo (well, gearing too) by 3%-ish.

      @nunyabusiness896 4 года назад +3

      Did you do it? Do you like it better? The power seems cool, but the 650 is already right at the line of being as heavy as I would like, I don't know if another 50 lbs would push it over the edge. Also, what about insurance costs, are they substantially higher? I'm not a highway squid so I'd only have here and there chances to really enjoy the extra power, so I'd just want to make sure I'm not giving up everything I like about the 650.

    • @boeing737d
      @boeing737d 4 года назад +1

      NunyaBusiness I love the way 650 does. Since this last time I replied; my situation changed. I gave away my 650 becuase of my knee replacement. Also throughout the time owning my 650, I realized that 1000 is too much. 650 is perfect set up for many things you can do.
      Now sport bikes is not happening for me so I had to change my tactics for riding; I’m going for Indian Bobber, 1200 cc. More power and it’s a cruiser. Something my knee can handle stretching out

    Request for bike review: The Honda CBR 650 F (potentially vs the older CBR 600 F that it has replaced). I really want to know what the bike is like, and why it is priced higher than the model it replaces, when the spec sheet tells that it offers less performance and parts compared to the older model. I've only been able to find reviews from India etc, or some very vague American reviews that barely contain any info - and no riding. I trust you guys for your unbiased opinion and in-depth review style.

    Hey! I own this bike and I wouldn't recommend it for commuting. first of all for consumption, a bike that takes you to work every day must consume little, and the z1k DOES NOT consume little, secondly, it would be wasted, the consumption of tires, services etc. are expensive.
    is a sport touring bike, a very fun bike that can brings you very far, that's it ;)

    Ninja 1000 runs about 4,000 rpm at 60 in 6th. GSX-S1000 runs about 4200 at the same speed and gear. Ninja is geared better, but could be better still. At the same time, the GSX has been said to get about 42 mpg in spite of spinning faster, but it is a long-stroke engine by comparison.

    One of the biggest downers about this bike I discovered just recently is the fact it puts out pathetic amounts of electrical power for accessories. 336watts. That's lower than the gen-1 FZ1 that everyone complained of running out of power for heated stuff and electrical gadgets, since it was a "sport TOURING" bike. Yamaha upgraded from mid 300's wattage to 560 watts on the 2006 gen-2.
    Yet unless you buy the Versys1000, anywhere this engine (and it's smaller 948cc derivative) is found, you'll have 336 watts. Z1000, Ninja 1000, Z900. I've checked the part numbers for the rotor and stator on parts fish (dot) com to verify, also Rider Magazine publishes the charging wattage for bikes often times. Think this isn't a big deal? Consider the rather mundane street bike like the Triumph Street Twin 900 is cranking out a boatload of power to the tune of 660 watts at a mere 3,000 rpm!
    Kawasaki has made a great machine in the 2017 Ninja 1000. Trouble is, it has some serious flaws that have prevented me from buying. Needs better gear ratios, needs a high output stator, and it could use a bit more power without any trouble considering it is 1,043cc. In the future I hope Kawasaki revamps the frame on this bike to match the light-weight functional trellis units that it's put on the Z900/RS, H2, Z650. Would knock a nice chunk of weight off this sport touring bike and it's not new design territory for Kawasaki. I'd probably go the DL1000 rout instead of this, opting for more comfort, even though the V-Strom makes a big part less power. It cranks out meatier torque everywhere below 6,000.

    All it needs is cruise control, and an aftermarket exhaust. I can understand why the Versys 1k handles differently. It has a totally different riding position and front end. Both bikes feel big when your on them, but the Ninja just feels like a big comfy sportibke, the Versys feels like a big but strangely light touring bike, unlike the Versys 650 which just feels like a tall, comfy sportbike (at least my Versys does).

Just an example: For Touring you get: Gold Wing, Gold Wing F6B, ST1300, Interstate, CTX1300, NM4, CTX700 DCT. What do we in Europe get? The VFR800F (marketed as Sport bike named Interceptor in NA) and that's it. North America gets to choose from 11 Honda Cruisers, in Germany you can only get the Rebel 500.

    Hi I heard you comment on mid corner handling being a bit hard to keep down, in the UK we found front end a bit hard and if you back it of 1 full turn , it's makes so much more difference

    This will be my next bike once spring comes around. I currently have a 2017 Ninja 650. Very comfortable but very under powered and all aftermarket exhaust systems sound horrible. Hopefully the 1000 will be the answer to my power and exhaust note issue.

    But the low gearing makes it feel quick at safer speeds, which in my view is great. I take the point that maybe this isn't what this bike is for.

  • @tammyforbes2101
    @tammyforbes2101 4 года назад

    The reason it’s geared like is that it’s a super sport tranny used for a engine that turns 12-13k rpm so if you was twisting right on past your red line like a normal ZX10 you would be about right but these don’t do that so they run out of gear quick! Best thing to do is gear it up spread them out a little get more top end!

    Good job great review. I bet I'd love that bike, but I'll probably never own a bike that new. I have a 97 Concours and a 88 Voyager and a 2012 zx14r. Even though the Concourse and the Voyager are old and totally outclassed buy that bike I still love riding them I guess they have character. I just like riding anything and everything. I guess I tend to see what a bike does good not what it does bad.

    Gearing on this bike is miles better than the GSX-S1000 *off the bottom.* Just needs a wider spread the rest of the way. The Suzuki has a stupid-tall 1st gear and a really short 6th.
    And it need more than a weak 336 watts for electrics, for those who want to add heated grips/gear, GPS, aux lights, etc.
