They were the authority of their congregation members, but what they taught kept people from coming out to Jesus. They blocked the way to Jesus with their authority (Mt 23:13). It is very difficult to understand heaven and hell, that's why Jesus spoke in parables. In reality heaven and hell is within you, heaven and hell does not have geographical location, that's why it is difficult to understand heaven and hell.
