  • I got to play this slightly out-of-tune upright piano at my grandma's house this Thanksgiving! Thought I'd record a nice video.

      It's always sad to see people go, but unfortunately, the world keeps spinning. It's good to take time to mourn a good friendship. Eventually though, you should get yourself back out there. There are other people meant for you and you deserve happiness and love. You're awesome, keep your head up

    I almost feel like the out of tune piano makes this sound better, and too, more sad and nostalgic,, like almost as if its to hear the old thing we know and love, we can hear its aging over the years, but it reminds how long its been with us, and it is still great!

    • @YottaVR
      @YottaVR  2 года назад +832

      How poetic! I agree 100%. It kind of has that “memory” vibe to it; it’s a little distorted and old, but all the better because of that! Hopefully my in-tune piano playing will still be able to achieve that effect in my upcoming videos :))

    The “out of tune” sound makes me think of someone coming to clear out their childhood home after a parent has passed or something, and they found the piano under a bed sheet and started having memories of learning to play with Mom, so they dusted it off, felt the keys for a few seconds, closed their eyes, took a shallow breath… and this came out. Beautiful.

      little personal story but a couple years ago my great grandma died. we hadn’t been to her house much in recent years but we were there relatively frequently back when we were younger. enough that a noticeable amount of learning to play piano was done on her piano.
      anyways, we went to her house to take stuff and clean it out. drove my mom’s car, which was given to her by my great grandma. it was fitting seeing it in the carport one last time. my mom and grandma left to grab some things which left me alone, and i found the piano again, left in its usual spot. still had the one random dead key and ever so slightly out of tune. it was oddly comforting and melancholic playing that piano in the house for the last time, one of which was wet hands.
      fortunately, the piano followed us home and it gets played a lot by my dad’s students at his work. i never realized how much, i guess attachment i had to that piano until we started cleaning stuff out. it was especially different since it’d been the first time at her house in probably 5 or 6 years, maybe more

Its just showing how things change over the years and it makes me so nostalgic knowing how long it's been. I wish I could return to the moment I first played Minecraft for a day.

    It sounds pretty odd on an older piano, not in a bad way though. Older pianos seem to have a more sustained sustain peddle, which makes songs like this that never let go of it sound odd. What I usually do is just re-sustain (let go of the peddle, and then push it down directly afterword) everytime the current key switches.

    Imagine:
    It’s the early 2010’s. You are sitting at home in your basement, you boot up your old console and open Minecraft. You open your survival world that you’ve been playing on for a while. You haven’t died yet, but your friend has a few times. Now, you’re both experienced and have full sets of diamond gear. You walk into your house and command your dog to follow you. You exit the house and start to adventure. As you wander through the forest, collecting the occasional flower or tree, the soundtrack starts playing. “Wet Hands” by the games main composer, C418. It gives you a small sense of joy and peace. Now, it’s 2023. You are scrolling through your RUclips recommended screen. As you scroll past videos of Karens screaming, long-nosed dogs asking “didn’t I do it for you”, the Rock eyebrow memes, and Gen Z cringe, you click on a video of someone playing an old piano. As soon as the tune begins, you are hit with a wave of nostalgia. Your friend lives on the other side of the country now. You have family problems. Your grades are bad. You’re life feels meaningless. The song now triggers the same feeling it did when you were 7. Now, you’re not worried about school as much. All you can do for now is listen. Listen… all you can do. Your fear slowly fades to peace. Your anger to joy, and as the song comes to a beautiful end, you realize, maybe it’s not so bad after all.

    Such a nostalgic piece. Excellently played might I add. I really enjoy how the piano with its age actually adds a high level of authenticity to the composition. Well done to you.

  • @troliskimosko

    Such beautifully played! Just a suggestion though, perhaps you might want to lift the sustain pedal a bit more? Not a big deal or anything, just that the melody can get a bit lost and clouded if the sustain pedal is held too long (in between chord changes especially). Just my personal opinion, regardless it sounds amazing!

    • @YottaVR
      @YottaVR  3 года назад +148

      I agree! At that point I’d only been playing for about 10 months. Pedaling harmonically can definitely make it sound a lot more clean, but I think the cloudiness adds to the vibe. Also I’ve been learning lots of other Minecraft pieces and plan to make some really nice videos with those too! Thanks for the input.

    • @vexur3093
      @vexur3093 2 года назад +17

      @@YottaVR don't keep the pedal down because it "adds to the vibe," there is blurriness and there is what you are doing, and pedaling for the length of the whole piece just isn't a good idea. I still loved your playing, and I hope to see more from this channel.

    Also, if you're interested, I have a community Discord server for chatting and whatnot: discord.gg/5PR7VRsKxA - I'd love to chat with you guys!
    Just to address a few points I keep getting comments about:
    - Yes, I know it would sound better with proper pedaling. I didn't know how to pedal at the time of recording; I was self taught and only about 10 months in (with a 5 month break, so actually 5 months of playing, really). I am much better now, a year later (see my recent videos).
    - For the love of god, I get it! It needs to be played with Wet Hands! I'll record it again with wet hands since you guys keep commenting about it. Maybe ;)
    - Some people have said the tempo is too fast. Give the original a listen then come back…I played it, like, **maybe** 1bpm faster, haha.
    - I've got a 1,000 subscriber special coming out real soon, which will explain where I'm taking my channel and all those good things. Stay tuned!
    Thanks again guys. Your support means a lot to me.
