These guys were out in the Ocean all day to get this fish. This fish was speared on the last run of the day. They got two for the day. Obviously this was the biggest one. They were given to the Locals in NZ to eat. It was not sold for Profit or even to recoup costs. A whole village ate fish for a week. A true Legend. Thanks Butch for the Video. And thanks Gunther for a once in a lifetime shot. All caught on Vid.
#Greg Braddon at least those locals would have had the meanest feed of tuna for awhile... I watch these north American bluefin tuna vids and they ain't got nothing on our waters for giant bluefin tuna. I'm so lucky to be a kiwi and one day I'll be in there to catch me one🙏🙏🙏👍👍👍🇳🇿🇳🇿🇳🇿🇳🇿🐟🐟🐟
this video was so intense and badass you can’t help but entirely respect the sportsman like this compared to long liners and commercial vessels this is truly a nice thing to do for the community of the surrounding waters and for ethical hunters alike
I know Im asking randomly but does someone know of a method to log back into an Instagram account? I somehow lost the password. I love any tips you can offer me.
@Curtis Landon I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site through google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff atm. Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will reply here later with my results.
+Alex Ross If you're so concerned about the Bluefin preservation then go lobby against commercial fishing like net draggers and long liners. Spearfishing and Sportfishing literally make no dent on their population.
Freakin' amazing!! That thing is HUGE! I agree that spearfishing is the most sustainable, because you pick your fish, it's not a game of chance like net fishing or line fishing.
congrats boys... ive watched this vid time and time again, and i still dont get sick of it. id love to achieve what you have accomplished, it is a life long dream.' chur!!!
amazing to see such a huge fish caught so easy and stoned with first strike no struggle just hauled to the surface like a spider with a fly in its web you know it cannot get away. These guys are amazing hunters.
Congratulations Mr.Gunther what a fine catch, your shot was perfect because the tuna didn´t swon away fighting,I read the comments below I must say most are negative I think that´s envy from loosers. My dad once caught a giant 300 kg grouper in Los Roques Venezuela back in 1978 I have pictures of it,thank you.
Unlike the harpoon people, these guys earned this fish. This is what I call a true sport! That's 620.40 lbs fish and it took only 2 guys to pull it in!
i agree with the the conservation aspect of what some people are saying and agree that tuna in general are an overfished group of fish but you have to realize spearfishing is not the problem. when spearfishing there is no by-catch, no waste, and honestly look these guys took one fish. even if they had taken five thats extremely responsible especially when compared to the thousands taken by commercial fisherman. awesome video and great catch, only problem is youll never out do yourself now!
Willownss, I love spearing, it's a a wonderful feeling as a person that eats fish to be able to go into the ocean and catch your meal. I don't appreciate the industrial methods employed to catch fish but that in a way is also necessary. The saddest thing is that nobody is regulating themselves, that and the by product of fishing with nets make fishing sad. A few guys that grouped together and caught 1 fish which they are likely to eat isn't that bad compared to the souless commercial trawling.
Hey Megalops You almost had it, the tubing is electrical cable! I dont know how high the voltage is but it kills the tuna on the spot. The meat is then unspoiled and of high value. These guys are making money in a very interesting way ( selling to japan probably) Sadly these large tuna are on the decline worldwide. Great vid.
NOW THATS A PIG... wow... serious monster... NEW FAV video... EPIC music... great content, awesome ship... youtube needs move vids like this... good fellas.. Thumbs up...
beautiful! im a spearfisher myself i live in spain, and overfishing is not done by spearfishers, when i go on a dive i get 3 or 4 good pieces to eat em, sometime i even dive just for fun without my gun cause i love the sea. its all about respect to the sea.
That was the first shot placed on the Bluefin Tuna. You can tell this by a) the single spear holding onto the fish b) no other lines/guns floating above the tuna that would show its being held on already Great shot and great footage.
Was that seriously a kill shot on the tuna or was the chase not recorded? Absolutely incredible! Ive been spearfishing for 12 years and have finally got a camera hooked up to my gun....great showing others a glimpse of the underwater world and spearfishing within it.
I doubt it. The famous $100,000 tuna you're probably thinking of was bought for many times it's normal value by a couple of crazy sushi chefs. A google search tells me that the average price per kilo for bluefin tuna in Japan is 8000 yen. Which means this tuna is probably worth about 22,000 dollars.
@ Taylor Dawson: I've done both, trust me this is much harder than bagging a buck. Shooting a big fish like this requires expert level skills. You have to 1) be comfortable diving 10, 15, 20m+ and stay steady comfortably down there as you scope and zero in 2) unlike the buck you have to be able to get close to the fish, which is not easy for big open water fish like tuna, marlin and trevally 3) only a headshot will do, if you don't kill the fish i.e. headshot bye bye speargun. It'll drag you like a horse if you don't let the spear gun go.
WWF is encouraging restaurants, chefs, retailers, and consumers to stop serving, buying, selling, and eating endangered bluefin tuna until this amazing species shows signs of recovery.
Damn the comm. vessals there stealing from us all! Awesome shot and beautiful fish! I hope the Tuna are around for us all to enjoy. With the way they are being fished it won't be long and you will have to go to a fish farm to see one!!
that was just incredible! so how much would a tuna that size be worth?? are we talking in the region of $35000 if u sell it to japan or am i just totally wrong? ive heard that massive tuna fetch tens of thousands of dollars out there, because of the sushi.
Some interesting comments !! I commercial fish for a living and this type of fishing is awesome ! Very safe means of taking a fish !!!! Great job guys !
I’m a spearfisher, theoretically I guess you could say it’s a safe means, but in reality it’s the most dangerous means, but the most sustainable. And least damaging
@scoliva I am actually a fisherman. A sustainable fisherman. The statistics of catch and release fishing could be argued all day; deep water fish have a 60% mortality rate while shallow water fish (such as rockfish) have less than a 10% mortality. Properly handling fish and using the proper equipment greatly increases their chances of survival. The fact that you are purposely avoiding is the status of the bluefin tuna...
Put another shrimp on the Barby I got a whopper!! Awsome shot man and Spear fishing is way cool!! I bow fish alot its similar but not near as difficult

correct me if im wrong but i dont think that trawler was fishing for the bluefin? I have a dvd where they go out off new zealand and look for these trawlers that catch Hokey? whatever they're called, and the tuna feed off the scrap the trawler throws out
Awesome shot to the spinal chord, if not that fish would have dragged the man into an abyss, it has happened to me before, Not easy to do. Hope you had a lot of sushi for a great party

@pmtad You are right, it is schools of fish. I am not necessarily against spearfishing; I hope to spearfish invasive lionfish sometime in the future. Spearfishing is sustainable in some cases because you can selectively catch fish. My problem with this video concerns the threatened bluefin tuna displayed in this video. catch of a lifetime. awesome job bro, great eats! for all the ignorant flames and posts, spearfishing is the best and most selective way to catch fish as it results in no bycatch and no harm on marine life other than the intended prey.
WoW, now that is a nice Blue Fin Tuna.... I would love to try that someday but I would be afraid that a big fish like that would take me for a deep swim. I wonder how many spear fisherman have died doing that and had a big fish pull them down and drown them? That had to make for some great fresh tuna steaks...
the price often fluctuates wildly and can go from more than $400 per kg all the way down to $4 per kg in a season - it's only the first and finest fish of the season that fetch the top end prices and within a couple days the price is down to half that and after a few weeks you're unlikely to get more than tens of dollars per kg - source: my memory of what I heard a bluefin tuna fisherman say (I play hockey with the guy) I'll actually ask him current prices this year when I see him this weekend
Haha, Reading the comments is almost as entertaining as watching the video. HIPPIES VS HUNTERS!!! I am both so can say spear fishing is not the problem commercial fishing is!!! Don't think you hippies got a clue on this one!!! Sick Shoot!! Sick Video!!! Sick Tunes!!! P.s. also cracked me up how many people have no idea what they are talking about in the comments. Did the village know they were eating a freakin $100k+ fish? LOL. (And a great stoned first shot. Music gave me a headache.)
Very interesting, if we can help, we can reach mire!
When a single fish outweighs all the people in the boat you know you had a good day...

that's right. go lobby against'em commercial fisherman -cough- japanese- cough-

The Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) is a large migratory fish found in the western and eastern Atlantic and the Mediterranean Sea. Bluefin tuna is the source of highest grade sushi. totally depends on the quality of the meat. but i suspect with a instant kill like that, there is no stress to the fish (no burn to the meat) and since its speared in the head, none of the eatable parts are disturbed. Then it would depend on how they handled and stored it from that point on. Cut the gills to bleed it out and ice it as soon as possible. Even with proper handling, it depends on the fish itself, diet, fat content, water conditions, where its caught.

Nice job! Big tuna with my blue water gun is on my Bucket List.
thats smart as fuck to use that boats scraps as a big chum bag! Ive never seen a tuna that big, you new zeland boys are crazy lol good fishin man
