I love the way this video gets right to it. We are flies on the wall, watching three experts engaging in informed, detailed and polite discussion. Cheerio!
More of this. No right or wrong. Just trainers talking about the benefits of different variations of the same exercise. Nice.
Love you boys! As a 58 year old just getting into lifting, I find your videos the best in explaining the muscle groups and discussing the differences in styles.
Way to go! I wish you well on your lifting journey!
I hope you’re still
Lifting
I’ve just started (2 weeks) into kettle bell training. At 61 I’m glad I started. Love goblet squat!
Great stuff guys, love your videos. Quick note if you don't mind: goblet grip is with hands around the bell, this is a horn grip, hence, not a goblet squat. Sumo squat is wide, more abductors, more gluteus medius / minimus. I'd say that these two squat variations are completely different, different objectives, hence, one is not better than the other. You don't want to go so wide that you can't pull the knees out and in anymore IMHO.
New debate ----> Is that a "sumo squat" or deadlift? 😅
I'm going with deadlift bro
@@b.tisdale202 nice. I wish I could go back 10 months in time.
There are a few things I'd change in my life.
I like the goblet squat with the kettlebell upside down, and handle perpendicular to your body, hands underneath it on sides of the bell and right up against the chest.
YES EXACTLY! I honestly don't know why they did it that way
Some very good points covered here, although I would argue that a KB Sumo squat looks more like a hip hinge to me than a knee hinge. The main difference between a squat and a deadlift is position of torso and angulation of joints involved.
Really cool to see this exchange of ideas style of video, with mutual respect and good pacing, technique and perspectives to boot
These guys are the best. Good team.
But truthfully good demo showing that everyone is different and there is no ONE WAY for a best exercise for everyone
You guys are my go-to for info simplified. Cheers :)
The kettle bell sumo squat feels more like a deadlift to me and the goblet squat feels like a squat.
Exactly - it’s a deadlift not a squat
Exactly
Ok that makes sense
I think deadlift, your knees don't bend as much.
As soon as your elevated, I’d assume it becomes a squat with the added depth.
I prefer the Goblet squat much more because it's much closer to a squat and it works more on the core of the body.(try turning the kettlebell upside down - it will trigger your grip much more) If I would like to trigger my back, I would do some bar-bell deadlifts or even kettlebell swings.
Conclusion: Try all 3 kinds, 'cause they recruit different muscles.
I like to keep the kettlebell / dumbell as close to my chest and under my chin as possible when I do a goblet squat. I just think holding the weight more out in front of you tends to make you lean too far forward during the squat.
It should do the opposite. One of the benefits of any kind of front squat is that the weight being in front of your center of mass makes it easier to keep your posture straight/back. The more forward the weigh is, the easier it should be to sit back.
Is it me or the sumo goblet really looks more like deadlift?
Yes, it’s a sumo goblet deadlift.
i love the way they conversate
The underhanded rock lift is the best, it involves more muscles. Its basically like lifting up a heavy stone, it is a natural movement.
Finally thank you for the wide stance - my trainer said ”no”
That's it, I'm going to try out both of them in my leg workout later today.
They are really totally different exercises. Next video - what's better, face pulls or calf raise?
Looked like a sumo squat (navy blue pants) followed by a sumo deadlift (gray sweats) by the way the hips are being driven.
if you have a heavier (taller) kettlebell and can't get enough depth/range of motion on the sumo squat, but don't have platforms to stand on to do it, put the kettlebell on a towel and grip the towel on the two sides of the bell.
As a bunch of people are addressing, a better comparison might be the kb sumo squat vs deadlift. I'd also like to learn goblet vs front barbell squat.
Deficit sumo KB squat is the way to go, IMO. Allows you to go down to parallel, very easy indeed on the back. And not limited by the amount of weight your upper body can hold like the goblet squat. Perhaps the most democratic variation of a weighted squat that there is
I don't see how the goblet is any use. For sumo's it's important to use a stand so you can squat to a little below parallel and lean way back not forward. Forward puts the vertebrae at risk and takes the pressure off the legs.
I've never seen goblet squats like that. The way I've seen it the kettlelbell is upside down and held a little higher. I think a higher weight position leads it to be more like a front squat too. I prefer them to KB squats for working on mobility and depth. KB's feel a lot like a low bar back squat or even a deadlift to me as a posterior chain dominant hip hinge motion, and so I'd rather just do one of those exercises.
Thoughts on holding the kettlebell out in front of you in more of a front squat position? I usually hold it by the bottom of the KB with elbows forward.
Very useful information!!! Thank you so much. I am a big fan.
The only critique, If I may, is that you guys need to do more reps of the exercise so that we can understand....
Both are great. I do goblet then do some sets of sumo. Reason is you cannot get more reps out of goblet due to the fact that you use energy to hold the weight with your arms to your chest. With a sumo, you do not do that and hence have extra energy for more reps at the same weight
Double Kettlebell Fronts Squats are better than both of these.
1:13 next-level butt wink LOL
Butt wink isn't actually bad unless it causes the lower back to round.
Adam and Justin...at about the 2-minute mark the two of you seemed as though you were about to discuss the difference between your two versions with Justin having a more rounded back. I'd love to hear your thoughts on if there is any danger in regards to the rounded back. Thanks!
MrPostCVHSmath no danger, just a different recruitment pattern
This goes to show that there is only a small difference between squats and deadlifts.
deadlift is more of a henge movement. squats make knees bend more.
do you think how wide one can comfortably go with legs may also depend on proportions? I have long legs and LOVE sumo. love it..love these vids too.
Gentle men I love this however, just a question, can we for variety sake and to recruit and emphasize a variety of areas in and around the hip, quad, glute complex can programming include a different version/stance Kettle bell placement every month?
Learning more and more thanks!!!
differnet type different work..i love goblet
Informative discussion
great video, got a few ideas for my own training
Love these guys
What's the exact difference between a kettlebell sumo squat and a kettlebell sumo deadlift? I have been calling it a sumo kettlebell deadlift and I can't seem to find the difference watching videos, seems people call the same exercise both?
Just started doing this and I wanted to ask after you made this video do you think that you're leaning forward too much ? #goblet#
I want a Mind Pump Mafia T-Shirt too...💪
This was really solid. Thanks
Try head harness on a kettlebell with a squat keeping your hand on the chain while squatting or obvious reasons.
I love both movements myself, I don't know which I would choose.
So is the sumo squat more for the Buttocks and hamstrings and the goblet a bit more Quad Dominant? Is that correct?
You can grab the kt body in the goblet squat. It's very comfortable
This was great.
how much did the kettlebell used in this video weigh? Just curious
Very informative video
what is the best weight for these squats for men ?
so addicting to the channel
Thank you.
That "sumo squat" is a deadlift. ATG GOBLET SQUATS are my fave and I do them at 63 years old: ruclips.net/video/VPusRarAkw0/видео.html
Still at it with goblet squats, I found a great bar for it too. 75 lbs. nearly half my bodyweight: ruclips.net/video/KSHegf6-2TI/видео.html
heavy goblet squats all the way, works legs, butt and the mid section
But upper back limits it.
I'm one of those that can't hold the kettlebell or dumbbell up under my chin. My grip strength and carpal tunnel make it uncomfortable and impossible
they look idencial to me, besides the somo can have a wider stance and holds the weight different
Goblet is better..but ıf you want to weight heavier lifts you must choose sumo squat..depends to your goal..
What's up with the Chuck Taylors? Especially when working with kettlebells it's better to wear no shoes, just go barefoot.
I do goblet squats (how I hold the kettlebell) but my legs are very spread like a sumo squat.. so I am basically doing both in one move.. is there a reason I shouldn't be doing that?
why are you comparing the two when they emphasize different muscles? Isn't sumo more ham and glute focused and goblet is more quad and core?
Sumo for the glutes and goblet for the quads
I never hold my giant drinking chalices that way when I squat with them ....
LOL!
The two exercises work the same muscles or not ??
I prefer to flip the kettlebell upside down. Then hold it tight to my chest.
Same. That's how I thought we were meant to do it 😂😂
What shoes are the guys all wearing, are they could for training?
Converse. Baseball shoes. And yeah flat sole.
good stuff thank you!
hey, let's all wear our chucks, we'll look awesome
This is a hardcore fitness / lifting thing. Even Russian strength trainer / pioneer in KB training, Pavel Tsatsouline, recommends lifting barefoot or wearing shoes with as minimal cushioning as possible, to engage the sensory receptors in the feet. Hence, the Chuck T's.
@@christopherarmstrong2710 Chucks are not minimalist shoes
K. P. They are compared to 90% of other shoes on the market. And, they’re a fraction of the cost of the ‘designer’ minimalist / barefoot shoes.
Converse are well known for this, as many people complain about their lack of cushioning or arch support - they’re the OG minimalist.
@@christopherarmstrong2710 thank you! I thought everyone knew you wear Chucks on leg day. Not only do they not have much cushion, they are also flat. They are perfect for squatting and deadlifting.
rick rezek they're great to workout in
Sumo squat ? It's deadlift
You're comparing a goblet squat with a _deadlift_
What's the point of discussion squats or dead lift??or both??
Nice vidéo but who is Katrina?
Good video but they need to use a heavier weight that forces them to treat it with more respect. The guy in the beginning picked it up like it was a toy. If you're teaching people form-- You need to be careful how you demonstrate handling the weight.
The only thing that this exercise can do is a statical load of you arms.
Belt squats, juniors. Results from westside guaranteed
Great
Wasn't the sumo squat as demonstrated a deadlift?
Bought this for my youngest to develop basic form for single hand kettlebell work. ruclips.net/user/postUgkxtaDAl93XF8wxJhssTtjIFjzid82wglva It has a nice grip on it, just a little rough so it isn't slippery. I was doing a few rotator cuff exercises to test and worked well for those movements I'd been doing with a regular dumbbell. Cool thing you can do is hold it in your hand for door-knob turns to work the forearm and grip. Note: it's small, almost all handle, but that's what I expected given the weight. Smallest I've worked with before is 15lbs, so it was kind of funny to see the difference 10lbs makes.
This is interesting
Do both …
awesome
Sumo opens my hips up better.
I like to sumo squat feel it more in my legs
Are you training girls or women? You do not mention techniques for knee issues that would be very helpful. Also, the wide stance has great potential for injuring the tendons and pulling muscles in the inner leg.
3 guys talking about exercise.
0:51
3:00
Why tf are all 3 of you guys wearing low top converse?
Flat, hard soles give solid and stable contact with the ground as you push. Very common in powerlifting.
The dude in grey sweat pants has bad mobility and probably imbalanced glutes to be teaching leg workouts
well, not a sumo squat thou, a mix between a deadlift and a sumo
I’m not a fan of either of these exercises. The weight is simply too light. Strength training is a rep range of 5 or less. One can do 20 or more reps of these exercises, that’s muscular endurance! I recommend the front squat with a barbell. You can load the bar in a progressive resistance program to elicit real strength gains. These exercises are “trendy” and are way over prescribed. I would only use these exercises as a warm up or in a rehab program but not for sports performance.
Joe Carbone awesome . Front squats are amazing and programmed in almost every single program we sell.
Mind Pump TV I’m sorry fellas, I gave my grows without giving my glows. I’ve looked at a lot of exercise technique videos on RUclips and as you know there is a lot of trash out there. But I find that you guys have the most technically sound advice on RUclips. That’s why I follow you guys. Keep the videos coming.
diy
....wha? Can you guys write a script or something? This was all over the place.
tiny meat gang podcast
Wow! Their Sumo Squats are horrible. Your back should be straight and you should be using your quads, glutes, and adductors. Not sure what the heck these guys are doing.
Form looks horrible. Great video though
Pumped full of bullshit, go buy starting strength

Thank you so much for your insightful and relevant comment. Really.
Nice pink shoes, Nancy.
