I do pull ups till failure and jump right on the lat pull down. Works well. Used the lat machine to get to the first pull up too. Just sit in a position that resembles your pull up and hammer it.
Yep, 100%. I used to just do heavy lat pull down, but when I switched to pull ups it lit up my whole back up. 5 sets of 10 wide grip, then go to the plate loaded machines. Has worked pretty well for me...
I do the same thing. As many pull ups as I feel necessary then finish off back with the pull down machine to isolate the back by pulling behind my neck rather than in front.
@@marturomano I do 3 sets as well, taken to failure on all body parts. Sometimes I have a warm up set so technically 4 sets. I remember in Covid time all gyms were closed and all I could train with was pull ups/ dips and some light dumbells . My back was insane I was weighing close to 225 lbs and could do 18 clean reps.
I have to stick to negatives with my feet on the ground, and eventually, foot assisted pulls, but that's the road to rehabbing my current injury for now. It's one of the ultimate exercises just like the push up. I can do the pull up that way, but I can't use a cable with just 10lbs on it without ending up in agony 15 to 20 minutes later. Builders need to never exclude the fundamentals of strength let alone forget them.
Same but because i started as a skinny fat, i didnt weight light but had very little strenght so i did tons of pulldowns and after every back workout i was doing sets of negative pull ups, now i can do like 3 pull ups the last day i tried but ill do the same until i can do at least 10 body weight

I think pull ups are great incase one finds themselves one day hanging off of a roof, window ledge, skyscraper or mountain cliff. Shee!! Someone watches too many movies😂
Some people might think theres no difference between a pullup with your bodyweight or a pulldown using the same weight of your bodyweight. Jay is absolutely correct. Pullups for some reason hit the back better than pulldowns. Nothing like pulling your body up against the force of gravity. Wish i would have been doing them years ago.
I started focusing on my lats and in the last 6 months I've been doing about 200 pulls ups in a week. I have a v shape now and people have started noticing it. Plus I've increased my strength a lot. Best exercise ever!
You gotta do them properly though. I say this because a lot of beginners don't myself included. You have to practice the retractation of your scapula to really give the lats an optimal position to do most of the work. Easier said then done but well worth the effort. That's why a lot of people feel they're arms and shoulders failing before their back.
Not trying to say who's right or wrong, especially since both are multi-time Mr. O's but it's interesting to listen to what Dorian Yates says, basically the opposite with heavier weights, lower reps and narrow grip and he built arguably the best back of all time.
Agreed mate, it's gold. Over the years I've done pullups with a band etc but nothing is better than the constant resistance of an assisted pull up machine. The weight doesn't matter, going for quality contractions with the head tilted forwards and squeezing the lats on each rep made my back explode with growth👍
“I don’t do chins anymore, but they were the key to my back width.”- Orville Burke. If you don't know who this man is, look him up. Had, probably, the widest back in BB history. It's important you get a maximal degree of Pull. Chinups are 180 degree, whereas pullups are not. Chin ups are fantastic for Width.
Nothing replaces the basics. Machines are good if you want to maintain without much stress on joints and ligaments. Working on the basics will get you big. Since I started doing pullups, barbell rows, tbar rows and dumbbell shrugs for back my back explodes. I was doing cables before and never improved.
Do lat pull downs chest up wide grip it's literally reverse pull up or even better try assisted pull up machine that off sets your weight, You can also use a rubber band on pull ups. Rows do recruit ur lats but it's more for a thicker back rather than wide. Your muscles are also stronger when you go down in the pull up movement so you can also train by starting at the top and only going down slowly then stepping on a box or something nd just do that repeat
I think what's smart with Jay is now. Hes focusing using machines instead of free weights, and there's nothing wrong with that hes still getting a hell of a good workout and he looks great at 50. Also preventing injury.
They are good if you have an injury and can’t do pull-ups. This way you are still able to work the area with a more structured movement, and flexibility in weight.
Pull ups are king. As you get heavier they are tough, but keep them in the rotation.
No shame in my game doing assisted pull ups

I counted 1 pull up altogether
1Inch pull up ,ok.
I believe the pull downs are a good starting point towards working your way to doing pull ups.
I totally agree, that's the way I got my first pull up.
