I'd never heard of John Shuttleworth. My brother-in-law turned up one day and played this tape to me many years ago and I swear I was very quickly lying on the floor clutching my stomach in a strange mixture of pain and joy at discovering a new comedy genius. What I love about this episode is the shop assistants actually sound like REAL people who don't realise they've become involved, and are participating in an absolute comedy GEM
This has to be my favourite episode. I love the craziness of it all. I saw John at the Oxford Playhouse last night and Graham came out to mingle with fans afterwards. I was deliriously happy as he signed my CD as 'Ken', including the Ken giggle and voice! So hope another series is on the horizon!
I met Graham at the Lancaster Dukes ( he was doing some serious theatre) back in early 2000s. He did the Ken voice for me and I tried not to be the gushing fan but failed miserably. "The Birthday Bench" is my favourite episode. It was the first one I heard after a random tuning into late evening radio. I was immediately hooked !
I wonder if Ken holds a long term grudge against Tony Hatch, I'm sure Arthur Askey would have given him at least 6 points on New Faces in 1973 no matter how bad his act was.
