- I'm working on an antique Ansonia clock at the moment and needed a mainspring winder! Yeah, sure - I'll just make one from random junk I can find in my shed! But will it work?

All coffees are hugely appreciated and keeping me well caffeinated is likely to bring you many more helpful videos! ☕☕😊😊
You should of shown the end result at the start as i had no idea what you where making but I was happy to watch anyway. Bit of an inventor Chris.
Thanks Hugh. Yeah, I probably could have - but that would have ruined the mystery! 🤣
Great build! Towards the end reminded me of setting rabbit traps!🤣🤣 Cheers, Chris.
Haha yeah - the same nervous energy involved! Thanks Ross 😊👍
Not bad at all. Gets the job done with little money and less hassle.
Homebuild solutions always leave you feeling more satisfied than the storebought ones.
Thanks mate, yep much more satisfying to build your own! 😊👍
top man you have saved me a load of money great just great no brilliant many thanks 👍👍👍
Haha, thanks John! I'm very pleased it was helpful 😃👍
As some others noted, at the start of the video, I wasn’t super certain of the purpose of the gizmo. Evidently, when repairing or servicing clocks, there are times when the mainspring must be removed and safely unwound so that it can be cleaned and oiled and then safely rewound so that it can be reinstalled in the clock. I think you have circumvented that need in previous clock repairs and now I see why. I look forward to seeing the clock repair and understanding better the process.
Also, I now understand what you have meant in previous videos when you pronounced a piece of equipment or a construction “a little agricultural.”
As always, your ingenuity and persistence is much admired!
Thanks Elaine. Yep Agricultural is a definite reference to a farmer's ability to fashion something together in a rough manner with minimal cost, time and no concern regarding aesthetics! It's just about getting a job done with no frills! You have a good grasp on basic repair work by the sounds of it 👍😊
Can’t thank you enough for your ingenuity! Genius!
Many thanks Black Dog, glad it was helpful! 😊
Brilliant! I couldn't wait to see the mystery unfold, as I had no idea what you were making. It turned out great. Clever boy!👍
Thanks Dee, I'm glad you enjoyed it! 😊👍
Looks very steampunk ! Well done
Thanks Retif! 👍😊
Fascinating, love the ingenuity, thanks Chris.
Thanks Jane! That's what happens when you grow up on a farm and your dad thinks he's an engineer! 😁
Very interesting, main spring winder. Didn't know there is anything like it. Thanks for sharing your build.😎😎🔥🔥⛏⛏
Thanks for watching! 😊👍
OMG, that was an edge of your seat video. I was sure the spring was going to fly across the room🤣🤣
Hahaha.. I nearly jumped across the room! 🤣🤣
That spring made you and me jump, Chris! But it showed how the jig works by keeping everything contained and in place.
I thought I'd leave that footage in so that we could all jump together FF 😉🤣
One Heavy Duty spring winder!👍👍👍
Thanks Bradley - I tend to over-engineer things I build! 🤣
Good work Chris
Thanks Graham 😊👍
Looks great. I think instead of the bucket lid attached to the door handle if you were to drill a hole into the wood and stick a round piece of stock through that hole that then goes into the hole of the spring would work also. Might be safer.
Thanks Mark! Yes, that would probably be a better option. Thanks for watching 👍😊
Very interesting watch, but must admit was not really sure how it would work until the end.
Thanks Ed! Nothing like a bit of mystery in videos! 😜😊
Well Chris that was a very successful fiendish contraption! Next though is can you modify the other one in some way to make it useful for the likely hundreds of people who wasted their money on it?
Thanks Nas. Yeah, maybe - I'll have to have a (careful) play with it! Luckily they aren't an expensive item!
Is the curve of the handle affecting the angle of the hook?
Possibly Karen. I've altered the hook angle and it works much better. I think I'll also make a shield to keep the spring aligned as well 👍
Congrats on a useful home project... just don't ever expect a H&S award any time soon! ;-)
Hahaha, I've never known any farmer who was even nominated for a H&S award! 🤣🤣
Thanks Martin!
Impressive (and scary) build! I wonder if a U-shaped piece of wood could slide down over the nut and stop the hook sliding out, as well as helping hold the spring in line.
EDIT: Oh, you mentioned a shield at the end lol
Thanks Nebby. Yep, I feel I need to make a shield for it 👍
Bloody beauty Chris. And yep. It does look like it was made in a Cockys shed. But bugga it. It does exactly what you wanted it to do. Well done mate. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Quick question, is there a certain tension clock springs need to be or just enough to fit back in the clock?
Thanks Glen - it actually didn't turn out as rough as expected! 🤣 Springs can wind up until they won't wind anymore! But the wider only needs to wind them up enough to get the retainers on.
Thanks mate.
You not referring to Tyrell fixes all are you
He use one of this on a rope starter for a lawn mower.😅
Nope George, never heard of him! Sounds a rather odd thing to do! 🤣
Not really coil spring winder are used to coil Spring on small Engines or chain saws with coil windingSpring s😊
