This channel is a big reason why I'm in the middle of dropping $3k+ on a new setup. 😂🤣 LG C9 is otw now and I'm currently in the market for a reasonably priced soundbar/audio setup with Atmos. Even went ahead and got an Xbox One X too. I'm primarily excited to get back into collecting physical media. Started my 4K Blu-ray collection on Black Friday.
Heisenberg glad to hear it. C9 is quite the place to start!
@@txsaltslam5191 I'll definitely keep that in mind. Thank you for the recommendation.
Same here I got the C9 last week and now I’m looking for which is the best surround system to go with it, any suggestions would be appreciated
when you get this setup you also gotta upgrade your neighbours so they don't complain
i dont mean to be offtopic but does someone know of a tool to log back into an instagram account..?
I was dumb forgot my account password. I love any tricks you can offer me!
@Dylan Salvador Instablaster =)
@Cason Mohammed thanks for your reply. I got to the site through google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff atm.
Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Cason Mohammed it did the trick and I finally got access to my account again. Im so happy:D
Thank you so much, you saved my ass :D
@Dylan Salvador happy to help =)
I'm gonna stick with 5.1. I'm lucky to have pulled off setting that up in my living room.
I know that feeling, my amp does a good job of faking height channels though. Would love to have the real thing just to hear Full on ATMOS
Klipsch has hidden some up-firing speakers in some of their floorstanding mains.
I am in the process of upgrading from a 5.1 Dolby system to Dolby Atmos. Thank you for your explanation because having a separate receiver is something that is totally new to me. You broke it down really well and I understand it better.
brought my sony sound bar back in 2019 and love it to this day goes well with my ps5 and my sony 4k blu ray as well my dolby vision tv
It’s a truly epic experience to hear a Great Atmos or DTS X mix
Kind of waiting for speaker and receiver systems to get smart enough (I am sure some of this already exists) that all you have to do is plug in a speaker, and it tunes itself for the environment and the hardware being used. Totally self calibrating and adjusting. It would remove the need for matching and balanced hardware.
Doesn’t seem like a mic on a single smart phone would be enough though.
I couldn't grasp comprehend the concept of Atmos even when having watched the Dolby explanation.. thank you very much for explaining it!
Great video Jeff. I really enjoy Dolby Atmos soundtracks on my 5.2.2 setup. It adds a lot to my movie watching experience at home. Man congrats on 20k subscribers.
Thank you!!
What a clear explanation. Nice job!
Just finished the calibration of my 7.1.4 running on a denon 6400, went from a 5.1 system. I only need to calibrate the level of each speaker to reference and im done.
I use in-ceiling speaker (4x RSL C34E )in a drop ceiling, hope these sound just as great as the reviews on them. Heard atmos once in a less than ideal setup and was already convinced.
Will come back here after some listening of atmos material and give some feedback on the experience.
I will try for sure Mad Max fury road , marvel stuff and much more. if you guys have some suggestion let me know!
Thanks for the great videos and content as always!
I really appreciate this video. I never knew what 5.1 or 7.1 meant. You have a new subscriber sir.
I love Dolby Atmos & DTS X
I have a Denon 3600x for my system. Had some previous speakers for a 5.1 kenwood system from years ago. When I upgraded I added some sony upfiring speakers for the front and some polk audio speakers for the back. So now I have a 7.1.2 system and am so far loving it. Great that I did this right before the whole covid-19 outbreak so have tons of time to check this system out.
I have a 5.2.2 system with upfiring Atmos modules and it works great! However, I am fortunate that the bounce happens to work correctly in my small 4 seat home theater. I agree that it’s certainly a YMMV thing and ceiling modules may work better for a lot of people depending on ceiling height, texture, distance from screen etc. Atmos is awesome!
Thanks. Even if you just use a 5.1 setup, you still have to set your receiver for 7 channels in the menu. There are now some receivers which are 13.2 channels. There's also a new sound codec called IMAX DTS X (which is DTS's version of Atmos). I wish more people like you would talk about sound, instead of always obsessing about the picture quality. Cheers.
Dude, I cannot stress enough how helpful this video was! Thank you so much!
Wow.. this was an excellent overview and very helpful. Thank you!
This guy knows his stuff.
Very nice explanation of the Atmos. Subscribed. Thank you.
'Thanks for explaining Dolby Atmos to us in layman terms'
I've very recently gone from a Sony STR 1080 7.2 receiver to a Denon 3600h 9.2 receiver and even though the extra height channels makes a huge difference! in my personal opinion even though the Denon has got a wider soundstage the Sony audio has a far more richer sound especially listening to 2-channel stereo music, I've had the Denon for nearly 5 weeks and I'm hoping because of lockdown and the unusual circumstances whether they'll allow me to exchange it, so I can upgrade to the arcam 390 and maybe after a few more weeks of saving i can go for it's marching power amp, because I know I will eventually! anyway before starting out on my Dolby Atmos Mission 3 years ago, these words I should have heeded....
" you always want to improve your audio" lol 🙄
Psst...Hey Jeff in 2020…If you’re able to read this message then Congratulations on hitting 20k subscribers!!!
I implore you to just keep doing what you’re doing by putting out those awesome high quality video content because In just 2 years time…here..Now 2022 you’re about to hit 100k Subscribers!!! and you and your family just moved into your New Home!!!Damn… Did I say too much?? LOL!!
Anyway…A Huge CoNgRaTuLaTiOnS 🎉 to you and your continued success!!!
Great video. Thank you for the atmos info. Explains alot. I have a 7.1 upgrading to 9.1 in the future. Probley do 7 speakers then 2 heights.
Wow, that was more interesting than I thought, haha)) 128 channels, that's crazy! seems like downmixing them to even 7 is compromising, and i thought 5.1 was excessive..
I have 4 SVS Prime elevation speakers on my ceiling. You also get ceiling mounting brackets with the speakers
Another option for ceiling is mounting speaker directly to the ceiling and using ghost wire to connect them. I started off with indoor/outdoor speakers and used their brackets. I then got matching speakers to the rest of mine with keyhole slots for wall mounting and mounted those. I made sure to put my mounting screws into the ceiling joist/stud. Polk OWM is a good option for this. I also like the mounting brackets that come with Martin Logan Motion 2i & 4i. Overhead sound is best with Atmos and in my opinion 5.1.4 is superior to 7.1.4. Just because one can't get into the ceiling for one reason or another doesn't mean you should not try to get that overhead speaker.
Though there are currently only a few video games with DOLBY ATMOS encoding I upgraded to RIG 500 headphones and subscribed to DOLBY ATMOS and even the regular games sound so much better. On Division 2 I can hear every cricket, bird, or footstep etc, and that alone can help with game play especially if you can hear what's coming up behind you. The next generation of XBOX will probably have more games with DOLBY ATMOS encoding. Listening to the DOLBY ATMOS demonstration on my XBOX is really impressive as well.
I love this channel.. Keep up the great work!
I just bought a soundbar and speakers. One of my best purchases ever.
I'm currently running a Nakamichi 7.1.4 Atmos soundbar in our bedroom theater and I've oriented the rears to downfire rather than bounce, makes all the difference in the world. I simply don't care for the concept of bouncing sound off of anything.
Love the upfiring speakers tbh ❤ tried the 7.1.4 heights, not for me
I know it’s about Dolby Atmos but I was wondering why nobody talk about U-571 it’s a great movie 🎥 and the sound effects is excellent !
Sami Debs I used U571 as a reference also an older movie “8mm” is great and would love to see it released in 4K
It has a legendary audio mix that is still reference quality to this day. When listened to on a decent multichannel audio rig the depth charge sequences alone deliver an aural experience that will rattle your bowels.
I mounted bookshelf speakers at an angle on my cealing.
thank god somebody finally fuckin described atmos in terms of object based audio instead of just calling it "high quality plus height channels"
Films at home what are Dolby atmos blu Ray's usually formatted in how many channels does it automatically adjust depending on how many speakers u have if so that's some clever technology
You need a minimum of 4 heights for panning or else it’s going to use the surrounds instead of rear heights to pan from the front height layer
Great review 👍😀 Got Onkyo 757 Dolby Vision & Dolby Atmos & DTS X . Klipsch Center ,Back Surround, Polk Audio for Heights . I like to mix it up. My next upgrade is to 9.2.2 Receiver with preouts to add a Amp to get get 200 WPS for each speaker . Get review
Thank you! 9.2.2 sounds like fun!
Well explained. Thank you.
Wonderful explanation
I have 5.2.2 with Klipsch r820fs as the mains svs prime elevation as the "Atmos " speakers
Hi man great video love it, before you get another 2 elevation svs speakers you need another sub or amp to drive them, use 2 front height and 2 back height for best result, but first look at your avr if it supports 7.2.4 or 5.2.4, i advice you to go with the receiver that can mix with other sounds, such as auro3d, you can upmix you're content from dolby atmos or dts x to auro 3d, what makes a hudge difference in height sounds, i said just try it out, when you got you're new AVR and the 4 height you'll see...have fun and good luck!
i love my SVS speaker :)
I bought a used Surround Systeme but had to buy a reciver new. Then I upgraded my front speakers and used the old ones as atmos speakers.
Great explanation, thanks
thanks for the intro, though I was a bit distracted by your eye movements 👀😆 teleprompter I guess?
Good job
Wow I've learned so much!!!
I use a sad Vizio 5.1.2 it tries it’s hardest to play with the big boys but.... it just can’t. That being said it does get very loud and has some decent clarity
hi Jeff now that Apple Music is promoting Atmos in your headphones have you been jamming in your home system I have lol
Great video! Awesome explanation of atmos!
Good video, but I think I'll just stick with Dolby NR...
Great video. I just installed height speakers to my 5.1.2 system and was wondering if you prefer a certain placement for the height channels. I installed mine in the middle of the room and was wanting to know if setting them up in front of the room would sound better.
Great review
Thanks!
Guy knows his shit !!!
10:10 "Yeah mate, it goes up to eleven."
You should do a new video explaining the differences between DTS:X
Between DTS:X and Atmos, or other kinds of DTS? As I understand it DTS:X isn't as strict as Atmos on speaker placement, so as long as your speakers are good for Atmos they should be good for DTS:X as well. Beyond that the difference is more about which one your movie has, just like with TrueHD vs. DTS-HD MA; make sure your AVR can decode both. As far as DTS:X vs. other DTS, DTS:X is to DTS-HD MA what Atmos is to TrueHD on disc or DD+ on streaming: metadata (NOT an actual codec like the underlying 5.1 or 7.1 bitstream) about where various sound objects in the bitstream should go to your other speakers.
is there a height minimum for atmos to be effective??
Denon avr-x3600h, cheapest 11.2 AVR you can get and it is great. Only downside is it will only power 9 but process 11 speakers, you'll need a dedicated amp to power the last 2 speakers. It ain't that expensive either, got mine on sale for $799 plus tax CAD.
Is there a huge Difference between Dts X and Dts HD Master?
DTS X is DTS's answer to Atmos, it works very much in the same way as Atmos does by utilizing height speakers. It's also still of course lossless like regular DTS-HD MA.
I currently have a 5.1 DD set up but I am hoping to get Atmos for 2020. The C9 left a big hole in my wallet :)
BTW, I did watch the 4K Bluray version of the long night (GoT) this weekend on the LG C9. I have to completely admit it was a totally different experience than streaming. I was even able to clearly see the distant mountain ranges during the night scenes and clearly see the dragon dog fight between the clouds. I think ep3 of GoT really demonstrates clearly the difference between streaming and physical media. I am a believer now 🙏🏻
Right! GOT is totally different on 4K
If anyone can help me find the right sound system, I am debating between a Samsung HW-Q600A and a Vizio M51ax-J6. What's the best one for Dolby Atmos?
Mahalo for the video bro!!
I just got my Jurassic Park five disc 4K Blu-ray’s!! And there is no way I can watch this on night in my THX ULTRA 2 system or I will piss off the Neighbors and my landlord!! Lolol
not all the channels are just for objects. Dolby Atmos Cinema Processor," supports up to 128 discrete audio tracks and up to 64 unique speaker feeds.
I don't have an ATMOS capable system, just the regular 5.1 that can decode Dolby tru-HD. But when I play a 4K ATMOS movie, I swear I can immediately tell the difference. The sound is just so much more expansive, there is so much detail clarity, everything is just punchier. It's a mystery to me how ATMOS can make a difference even on a regular system.
What's the difference between having to drill some holes to your wall or to your ceiling? 😂
Wouldn't Atmos sounds bars have some sort of reciever in? I'm only renting so had to buy a Atmos sound bar. Fit the Samsung made by harmon/kardon. Sounds pretty awesome but don't have a home theatre to compare it to a proper set up!
thanks bro. New Sub here !
When do you suppose this Dolby Atmos will fully take place in the movie experience? 5 years? 10 years? Any good guesses?
wish there was a quality sound bar for around $400 that did it right. some folks just don't have the space for all the speakers needed.
Sound bars are lame. If you don't have room, consider doing a small 3.1 setup - Center, Left, Right, and subwoofer. Surround sound is kinda cool, but you can still get sound you'll love without the surround speakers.
@@JacobFrey lot of folks do not want to mess with speakers and wires, which is why they sell so well today, as lame as they are. Plus you can get decent virtual surround from a quality soundbar n good bass from a good sub. I doubt any soundbar setup is going to do atmos properly (and priced for regular humans), but for just general good 2.1 sound and psuedo surround there are some great soundbars out there.
Hey Jeff
Wondering if I connect Bose Lifestyle T20 Home theatre system to Dolby Atmos aftermarket Receiver like Yamaha or onkyo etc. instead of Actual Bose media player that came with system, will that deliver Dolby atmos sound ?
I just subscribed to your channel. I hope you might be able to help me with a question. About 4 years ago I bought a Samsung 4K 65 inch TV. I bought a Jamo surround sound speaker system (added upfiring Elac speakers too) then bought a Denon 4K capable Dolby Atmos AV receiver. But then realised the TV wasn't Dolby Atmos capable. I eventually bought an XBox as I read it was capable of Dolby Atmos pass through , the sound was incredible watching Netflix series like The Haunting On Hill House. via Dolby Atmos.
I have now discovered that Samsung for whatever reason don't have Dolby Atmos pass through on any of the TV's (I understand they don't want to pay Dolby a fee), but I think that's unfair on customers who might want a Samsung TV, but then can't have Dolby Atmos with it. It appears Samsung have introduced a technology called Object Tracking Sound (I hope it's not just marketing speak), which seems to be an attempt to compete with Dolby Atmos.
Here's my question, I hope you might be able to help me with. If Samsung does not carry Dolby Atmos, will OTS be recognised by something like my Denon AV receiver and be able to play the sound based on that system coming from the TV? If not, Samsung would leave me with no choice but to switch to a brand like LG Oled which comes with Dolby Atmos as standard.
I got a Onkyo SR705 which is DTS MA but not ATMOS. What are some solution to get this ATMOS compatible?
Buy a new receiver
I want to see the most crazy atmos setup somone can do.
buy XLR balance receiver, outlaw 7220 & a good speakers. Good speakers & amp will last 50 yrs nothing change. Set up only 7.2.4. movies are up to 7.1.
Hi, I totally I agree with you about SVS they make brilliant speakers. sinds recently all my speakers are SVS. I got a 5.1.4 setup Front Prime Pinnacle, omg! what a sound! with these speakers sounding bigger than they look, Ultra Center, Prime bookshelf, 4 Prime Elevations and my latest buy is the SVS PB 12 nsd subwoofer through a brilliant blackfriday deal at the SVS dealer here in the Netherlands. Last sunday I watched saving private Ryan 4k blu ray, I was blown away!! from the sounds bubble your in with this SVS Atmos setup! back in the day I was impressed with the sound in the cinema, but to get this and even better sound in my own livingroom!!. Ready player one 4k blue ray was brilliant aswell. In the near future thinking of upgrading to the SVS Ultra surround speakers so I can have a 7.1.4. setup. Great channel btw!! ....oh forgot to tel, the brains in my setup is the Denon AVR--x6400H
Is Regal theatre RPX which I think is their version of IMAX a Dolby Atmos or is it DTS HD sound
Most are DTS X which is another object based audio . You will notice they have "height speakers" that are high on the sidewalls (higher than the normal side surrounds) but are not mounted on the ceiling . This is similar to a setup you would use at home with SVS prime elevation speakers. The primes are used for dts X and Atmos but in the theaters case I believe it will only be for DTS X
I have a Dolby Atmos system from Onkyo(HT-S7800) If I upgrade my sub with the SVS SB2000. Will I notice a upgrade or does my onkyo receiver hinder the sub?
Why would the receiver hinder the sub?
Is it not enough to buy a good 4K TV with Dolby Atmos without any Speakers to have a great Movie feeling when watching a 4K Blu ray ?
Hey Jeff, Great video! I just bought the Yamaha 7850 receiver from Costco. So far so good but from what i gather it only does 5.1.2 instead of the 7.1.4 I thought/wanted it to do. Anyway, I don't want to spend any more money and my room is only 11 X 13 so all good. My dilemma is finding a film that takes full advantage of ATMOS AND frequently uses the height speakers. Since you watch a lot of films, can you recommend one? Thanks!
Saving Private Ryan! That opening scene. That or Pacific Rim
@@JeffRauseo Thanks! shoot, forgot to ask, Bluray or 4K disc?
7.2.4
So basically with a 7.1 system you make it a 5.1.2 system :)
How could you add an extra set of atmos height channels for the rear if you have a 9.2.2 receiver?
You can't if your receiver won't support more than .2
@@SirTeoHero you can have 4 subs by using y splitters. I was just curious if there was a similar hack for height channels.
@@dolbyprologik They're assignable in the receiver, so instead of 9.1.2 with dual subwoofers (which is the correct way to say that), you could have 7.1.4 with dual subwoofers. But trying to "hack" an 11 channel receiver to add more channels is not going to work well: you'll be losing power and distorting the soundfield.
@@Kamuigod2001 I ended up buying an emotiva amp to get the extra channels I needed.
Still don't get how you can get Dolby Atmos effect from one speaker. It's clear from your comments that the atmos soundbar reviewers haven't actually heard what a proper Atmos setup should sound like.
My dad asked me if movies on Blu Ray / 4K still use Dolby Digital 5.1 and I told him Dolby Atmos is the new standard, is that true. In my family we have an older 5.1 Dolby setup, it still sounds awesome but I or my dad can't really afford to upgrade it to Dolby Atmos even though I really want to.
5.1 is still standard I’d say, but not Dolby Digital. Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD MA is really standard now.
Not everyone can hear a big difference between standard 5.1 and Dolby TrueHD/DTS X.
@@JeffRauseo Thank you, I wasn't too sure about it and because I own quite a bit of movies on Blu Ray / 4K I just needed to know for the newer movies coming out. Much appreciated.
@@MR_MRM_ Yes definitely. Terminator 2 Judgement Day still sounds awesome in 5.1.
Hi, you know if out there for sale 4K hdr 120 FPS movies yet??
Gemini Man will be 60 FPS, and that was the only one I know of that was shot in 120 FPS. Don’t expect there to be much of that
More than 60 fps aren‘t very useful. Movement won‘t be displayed any smoother to your eyes. But the data that has to be processed during cutting the movies would be more than twice as much compared to 24 fps which is pretty much standard today. Special effects are mostly rendered in 2k due to the amount of time and data needed for 4k.
My bet: you won‘t see much 60 or 120 fps material.
Question please: I have 3.1 Klipsch RP setup with a Denon X4400h receiver. When the Atmos signal is being passed through, should I be seeing the atmos logo on the receiver? Or does the logo only come on when you have actual atmos speakers plugged in?
Yes!
@@kirkbond1703 thanks Kirk. Could you please explain more?
Gotta have a Dolby Atmos 4k blue ray player or tv,apple tv....must program avr setup for atmos... yes you have to hook up speakers avr will ask.
You will see Atmos on the display when their is a Atmos signal passed through to the AVR, you can also press the info button on the Denon remote to see (on the tv screen) what signal and speakers are active.
@@Ham247 Thanks Michiel . I don't have any Atmos speakers at the moment I think that's why I'm not seeing the Atmos logo on the receiver. it seems like once I have Atmos speakers plugged in and connected to the receiver and also playing at most content, that's when I will see the logo and experience the sound.
Have you (or anyone else) seen/heard a difference on discs made in Mexico vs not made in Mexico?
There shouldn't be. "Disc Made in Mexico" is prominently printed for legal reasons on sets whose discs are made in Technicolor's Mexican plant (possibly other replicators but Technicolor is now the biggest), but that alone doesn't affect playback as discs are usually mastered elsewhere. Beyond that, some say the Mexican plant's discs have fewer errors than those made elsewhere (though I can't vouch for that).
Overated selling point. I've been a life-long audiophile, and Atmos is literally a selling point of tripe. IMHO, DTS has been, and always will be the best standard, because not myself (or most consumers) don't have 15 speakers.
I have no need for dolby atmos...my Yamaha..stereo handles 5.1 channels but I have 4 3way speakers that handle 500 watts ,,,and one 18 inch 2000 watt subwoofer ,,with equalizer ,,and sounds loud and clear..little theaters speakers are not at this level of power
how to access bd live content
I'm wondering if a Denon AVR -X2300W receiver (that I own) and doesn't have Dolby Vision capabilities (on its description), if I buy a Dolby Vision TV, a Dolby Vision Bluray player can I watch Dolby Vision films or not because of the receiver capabilities? Please who knows to answer me. Thanks
Yeah your receiver needs to be able to pass Dolby vision
Either that, or your player needs dual HDMI outputs with the main one (HDMI1) sending DV directly to the TV while the other one (HDMI2) sends ONLY sound to your older AVR. My Sony UBP-X700 is set up just like that, with HDMI1 straight to my TCL 5-Series TV with DV while HDMI2 goes to an older Sony AVR that supports TrueHD & DTS-HD MA but not Atmos or DTS:X (not in my budget yet). If your TV & AVR have HDMI eARC that's also an option; I wouldn't recommend normal HDMI ARC (which my TV & AVR both support) for discs as that limits you to Atmos over DD+ (OK for streaming, but most discs use Atmos with TrueHD instead) & regular DTS (no DTS:X or DTS-HD MA).
Yeah... I don't see 9.1 or 11.2 vs Atmos much any different...
7.2.4 is awesome for home theatre
You kind of look like Joell Ortiz.
sticking with 2.1 - im already bored of unnecessary tech
What are you talking about headphones are fake at most we only have two ears. Dolby Atmos audio tracks when played out of a headphone are binaural. To get true 3D audio recorded you use a binaural microphone.
Between the modern trend of actors mumbling and all this audio track stuff I'm sick of watching films where I cannot hear the dialogue in films on a normal stereo TV playing back a Blyray!!!!!
PS Why do you call the thing that OUTPUTS the sound a receiver??? and dosen't the disk player (bluray/4k) output the surround /atmos sound so why do you need a seperate 'receiver'?
Eh. 2.0 stereo speakers are good enough for me.
Would like to try out Dolby Atmos one day. However, 5.1 audio hasn't left me wanting, either. 🙂
gjk-2015 you don’t know what you’re missing
I have gone back to 2 channel. It seems like the gear is changing too much too fast to drop thousands on new gear just to be outdated in 2 years. Don't get me wrong, I do love surround sound. Just don't want to keep upgrading every few years.
Good for you. Not for me.
@@MixedMucus great audio.
Go to Audioholics youtube they explain Dolby atmos in further explanation, this kid doesnt know what he talking about!
Nicely explained. Good job Jeff !!!!
Thanks!
