Imagine just sitting there all night listening to James Hetfield play guitar and switching his sounds all night. So mad.

13:44 James picks up some used guitars from eBay. Imagine you had some old ESP or Gibson that you played on for years covering Metallica songs then one day times are hard and you sell it. Only to find that James bought it and is using it on his worldwide tour.

Yeah thats sick.. Also sad for casual buyer.. You bid 1000 bucks and then James shows up buys it instantly hahaha

Tomorrow we’re meeting up with Rob Trujillo’s tech Zach, to do a gear run. If you have any questions about Rob’s gear or his tone, then ask away, and we’ll deliver them. In the meantime, check out this Gear Run we did with Chad, James Hetfield’s tech, at our previous meet up.

Metallica's techs are a huge reason why they are such a great live band. Because they don't have to worry about hanging around a single spot all show to switch sounds, they can freely move around the stage and interact with the crowd as they please.

Chad and Justin posted on the Fractal Forums the other day about the current rigs. The guys are another scalp that Fractal have claimed. They've moved over to the Axe-FX now to scale down the size of the rigs and the amount of stuff they need to transport.

can anyone tell me why he uses a quad compressor and two channels for the two channels being his heavy and clean

In this video I see that James is using a Line6 Pod X3 Pro in his rig! I wonder what sounds from that is used. Maybe just some effects?

I'd love to know what kind of neck relief and string height James prefers. I can't find any references to it anywhere. I've been trying to setup a Les Paul I got recently. Trying to get the "Load" tone.

    • @Taylor___

From the sound on the clean channel, I bet it's about 1.5 mm action.. straight neck and guage 10 strings.

Seems weird that they're developing signature amps with Mike Fortin/Randall if they're using Fractal's live.

***** They apparently did, during the Grammy Awards performance. Maybe not on tour though.

***** They are now using Fractals for all their live shows. Chad (James' tech) mentioned it on the Fractal Forum that the band had officially switched to using the units live. The main reason for the switch was because of the Zero Stage Volume.

+Dean Singh ,not to mention the time span of certain bands' careers that sometimes require many different tones. King's X use one also.

If I were this the guy, I modify the clean sounds for live shows.I never liked the idea for very raw clean tones of my favorite band unfortunately. I never liked One, Fade, Sanitarium,The Unforgiven played live. They must add some chorus and sustainer. And a compressor for long time Buzzing E string for the beginning of Nothing Else Matters and Sanitarium for both guitars.

Serdar Yumer That's not the function of a compressor. It would affect all strings, and to be honest it would sound bad, and i agree with you on the chorus and reverb, although I'm sure he uses delay and chorus on clean.

"yeah James' rig isn't too incredibly sophisticated" ... while looking at what appears to be G14 Top Secret classified technology most likely obtained from a source outside of the planet Earth.

  • @Taylor___

Imagine sitting there for two hours a night waiting to change guitar channels. What if you get distracted by something and forget to chain the pedal and James goes for a heavy sound and all he gets is "clunkity clunk" clean sounds ha! I guess it's never happened.
