- This is PART 3 of an epic road/off-pavement trip that Billy Oliver and I went on in February 2024. Almost 1200 miles over four days.
We left Sour Lake Texas and headed to Austin TX for our first stop (340 miles). As always, our goal was to look for as many "off pavement" (gravel/dirt) routes as we can reasonably find and ride on the way. The second day we rode from Austin TX to Junction TX - just a fantastic ride.....NUMEROUS water crossings through the Texas Hill Country (218 miles) including the infamous James River-if you have done it, you know. If you haven't, much watch!!!! At least nine (9) water crossings...where somebody went down....slimestone.....
On day 3 we left the Overrun Ranch in Junction (owned by Ronnie and Susan Choate) and rode West and then South to Barksdale. Lot of "bump" gates through this section. From Barksdale, we hit the "Three Twisted Sisters" (RR 336 and 337) and one of the "Dirty Sisters" (now so named)....ended up in Boerne, Texas (247 miles). We had thirteen (13) water crossings....
Day 4 we left Boerne and rode to New Braunfels and the awesome River Road where we crossed the Guadalupe several times (all pavement but a neat road) to San Marcos through College Station. After a lot of pavement, we found part of the "Cheeseburger Loop" (gravel) outside of CSTAT which got us back to the Sam Houston National Forest. From there we slabbed it back to Hardin County (for me) and Winnie TX (for Billy). 383 miles on day 4....
This is a must ride for any adventure motorcycle rider-especially the Austin to Junction to Boerne part.... I hope to do this again this year! As always, be glad to share GPX file of this route. Thanks for riding along!
King Burger in Rocksprings is a must stop! One of the best burgers you'll find.
Thanks for stopping by! So much fun at the Frio Canyon Motorcycle Stop and Bent Rim Grill! Thanks for the shout out to the Bent Rim Grill and our Three Twisted Sisters™!
I will be back!!!!
KC260 is a great road. I grew up hunting not far from there and that used to be our morning thing. Get breakfast in Junction, stop at Simon Bros and pick up some corn, sodas, or whatever, and then go drive KC260. I've yet to take it on a motorcycle, but water crossing 4 and 5 are sketchy in a truck too when it gets slick.
The next you are passing through Bandera stop at the General Store for a chocolate malt.
Will remember that! Sounds great right now!!
I would like your GPX files for this ride. I'm trying to get my Harley riding friend on an adventure or dual sport bike. He live on 337 not far from The Bent Rim.👍
Be glad to when I get back from trip!!
