Any film of any percentage is illegal in India and only sun shade from the manufacturers are allowed. 70% for front/rear windshield and 50% on side window rule is not valid for after market films and it apply to car manufacturers and for the inbuild glasses that means, they will manufacture with that percentage tint so it is inbuilt tint. All other claims from any company or scam is fraud and misguiding.

However, these aftermarket they are discussing is for cars without any tint, not every manufacturer provides tint in the car glasses, mostly that comes to more expensive cars. However, there could be situation when someone did not thought while buying the car initially and then due to family and kids wanted to install one, then can go for these aftermarket film with up to 50% visibility. Police will not generally disturb if it 70% visibility. 50% is borderline, as it depends on brand to brand - some brand it will be dark and some wont. So, if any traffic police stops anyone and feels 50% is darker then has to be removed and cannot argue with police, it is their call.

I'm from North, from Delhi and most of the part up to Punjab that I know does not tolerate films below 75% because that is not dark enough but if they find that your glasses have films on it (even 75% or above), they will remove it on the spot and fine you a hefty penalty if they are in bad mood or there is some checking going on, while in some city like Chandigarh, the chances of fine is close to 100%. Some cops use machine to detect the film, while some even go to use their fingernails. Even shades with net from the car manufactures on the rear glass is absolutely no. So it is risky affair here, the tolerable are shades with net on both sides and driver side must have half that come from some manufacturers like Maruti Suzuki, I heard a case of Kia where police fined the guy.

Sir one point, as per Govt. Regulations you are not supposed to have any tint from after market. If you paste a tint it will break the character of the glass. Only company manufactures tinted glass are allowed
Keep all the documents ready, nothing to worry, afraid of, if it's fatal accident, inform the police help line no at the earliest, you may need to protect your belongings and life., advice don't exceed 100 kms per hour in NH even if it's traffic free.

Sir, I raised a RTI. Got a reply that as per central govt guidelines 70% visibility is allowed. However each state govt are free to implement their rules.

Second the percentage of light allowance mentioned are for OEMs in glass manufacturing and not for customers. But still I cud see complete black color film windows on roads and debate is on sunfilm.
Point 3 - During accidents the front glass should break into small PIECES.
