As an atheist, Aron exhibits more humility and compassion for others than any Christian I've ever met.
If a Christian does something good, one has always to question his motives. Usually it is to please his skywizard to get a VIP ticket to heaven. I have a hard time seeing a person who needs to be told to act good as a guenuinely good person. It's remarkable that some people feel the need that they need to be told that killing is bad. As if our laws weren't enough to prevent them from doing so. Some seem to only restrain themselves only because ther Gawd told so, as they seem to think a nonbeliever can't possible come to his own conclusion that killing is bad.
You need to get out more then.

We're still in an age of residual McCarthyism.
I've mentioned that before when discussing the oddity of the current political climate under Trump. I mentioned how during McCarthyism's high days Russia was equal to socialism and were equal in being hated. It still was in the so-called "post McCarthyism" times in late 70s-80s, when there movies like Red Dawn, Red October, or Rambo and it was common to hear "Die commie scum!" in movies even as a joke (some movie even had a guy dressed as Rambo for Halloween).
Today many no longer hate Russia and don't spit on saying it yet still have the knee-jerk reaction to socialism. Hollywood no longer puts out movies like Red Dawn en masse, yet people still sneer at people who say they are socialist, even if its 'democtratic socialist'.

There are many individuals who are starting to believe that we live on a flat earth. This despite MOUNTAINS of evidence. That is one example of people's idiocy going full throttle.
Thankfully they are in the minority, there are more individuals learning correctly about science and turning away from religion.
I firmly believe that within the next 100/150 years religion will go completely or be a minute fraction of its current size.

I am not gay. But I like to wear men's clothing cause it's more comfortable and cheaper. And the t-shirts have better cartoon characters.

When my brother was like 19 or 20 he got into some trouble and got lucky enough to do community service at our parents church. One day he was mowing the lawn and a 15 year old girl came walking up to the church from the high school nearby during school hours. She walked right up to the youth pastors office, my brother and the pastor were the only ones there that day. So my brother got curious and climbed onto the roof and looked though the office window on the second floor and saw them banging on his desk. My brother told the church and they all knew and were completely ok with it.

My wife n I have debates on these values often. She believes In a God but believes men made up religion and distorts what god would want for us, while I state men came up with both awful ideas. Remember to religion expansion of knowledge is a sin. And the idea of passing on knowledge to the next generation is not premited unless it is permitted by that religous authority.
Which is an irony considering how Christians argue that morality is god given gift and we'd be monsters without him.
Even by their own mythology the devil urged people to acquire morality while God forbade it.
Remember, the worst thing the devil did to humans was to give them wisdom and knowledge. Also self awareness.
When Adam and Eve became self-aware, they realized that they were naked and started wearing things, even though God intended them to be naked.

@Matt Smith Why you ask? Because according to Christians, he wrote the book through some people. Reading the bible or Koran is like reading Hitler's "Mein Kampf" and coming to the conclusion that Hitler is the good guy. Especially in the Koran, people need to be reminded every 2 or 3 sentences how great God/Allah is. If those books didn't explicitely tell you that God is the good guy, no sane mind would come to the conclusion that God is the good guy in the story.
That is so true, you only get one conscious life and you better take full advantage of it. if you pass that up you're screwed. for there isn't another one coming along.

Aron, your description about the taste of socialism made me think of early experiences. When I was maybe 4 or 5 years old, I really thought "atheism" meant you'd swallowed wrong and were choking, because when the adults around me would say it, they'd screw up their faces, go red or purple and cough or sometimes spit. My misunderstanding was only corrected after an adult outside these circles asked if I was alright when I coughed and spluttered from gulping down some water too fast. I said that yes, I was okay, I was just having an atheism, and it'd go away once all the water goes down.

I've lost my mom to politics. She taught me growing up that all people were equal. That it didn't matter if people believed in God or didn't. So when she says something bad about Mexicans or about any Muslims I remind her that my mother taught me better than that. I don't have Facebook because I couldn't stand seeing what she posted.

Many immigrants like to burn down the bridge they once crossed in order to prevent competition from the new immigrants. Not rarely, recent immigrants are far more opposed to immigration than natives. They like to think they earned their life, and see it threatened by the new wave of immigration. People are afraid to fall down the social ladder. They only care abou their own social status and when they see it threatened they react aggressively. People who aren't worried about such things are less likely to be opposed to immigration, but those who fear for their jobs or whatever will often be opposed. Also, rightwingers have been spamming the internet and fearmongering people for over a decade, even the press and media is on it. People have been made paranoid.

I'd love you to come to Scotland and do a talk about sectarianism. It saddens me that it still exists in the 21st century, and continues to have a toxic effect on society.
I'll be in Aberdeen in a couple weeks, but only for a social visit. Sorry.
Sectarianism isn't really a thing in Scotland, and has been enormously exaggerated by the Tory controlled press to belittle us. Even at the HEIGHT of sectarianism in Scotland (which wasn't within my lifetime), it was never comparable to actual sectarianism e.g. The Troubles in Ireland. Most "sectarianism" in Scotland these days is wrapped up in football; a fight that the overwhelming majority of Scots have no dog in the fight and no interest in it and where even those who DO have a dog in that fight aren't sectarian in the first place.
It certainly does exist, and you do have sectarian groups like the Orange Order, but it isn't widespread and it has virtually no effect on society whatsoever. Scotland is, in fact, a left-leaning, inclusive, social democracy. And by FAR out biggest political party is a left wing, social democratic party. Far from being a sectarian country, most polls now show that atheists make up the MAJORITY of the population. I've no idea why Scotland is so often accused of being an aggressively sectarian country.

Hallo my atheist friends. When I’m asked today as an atheist, what do you believe in. My answer is, I’m sorry I don’t believe in any thing (which causes confusion) but then I’m told that you have to believe in something. My reply is simple, I know or don’t know.
I share your "belief" as an atheist. I say "belief" because that's intellectually honest. You cannot show proof of god or atheism through mathematics. Which is an explanation of reality. Nor you or I can say a god does not exist with complete certainty. Hence saying "I don't believe in god". Which would imply you believe something or not believe in something else.
Aron, I have no bloody idea how some people can claim to be fans of you and yet voice support for Trump. The cognitive dissonance makes me feel insane!

I was raised a Jehovah's Witness from birth. When I was young I loved watching nature documentaries. JW adults would ask me what I wanted to be when I grew up. (A trick question because there was only one correct answer: preaching the "good news" of god). When I told them I wanted to be a marine biologist or some other conservation work, (my dream job changed frequently, but usually centered on saving the planet), those JWs would tell me the best thing I could do was preach so the "new world" would come sooner and god would bring to ruin those ruining the earth. I was told nothing I did for the planet would really make a difference because I was just one small person, and that god would never let the earth die because god created it just for us. It still makes me angry that many people do nothing because they believe god will make sure the earth lasts forever.
Why is egalitarianism/egalitarian communism bad?
@Paulo Mendes I think communist countries can have no classes and ultra rich. I think the USSR did pretty well in those terms. I think current communist or socialist countries are doing well in these terms as well. I also think that it's not impossible to have an egalitarian society, since hunter gatherers existed and were extremely egalitarian.
@Paulo Mendes History as you know it is a lie. Or so says Grover Furr. And even if the USSR was a dictatorship, the truth is it lifted millions out of poverty, eradicated famine, improved the quality of life. The USSR was the fastest growing country in the world at one point, with the highest gdp at another. The USSR also didn't look like a dictatorship. And yes, the circumstances are different compared to hunter gatherers, but there is a lot we can learn from them, like sharing is caring and don't exploit your workforce for your own personal gain.

Communism requires a centralized authority to enforce collective "egalitarian" ownership of everything. Putting that kind of absolute power in the hands of a bureaucracy doesn't work. The absolutely-powerful bureaucracy that communism requires cannot be trusted to be either honest nor competent. Also if someone's own wealth is going to be equalized, no matter what he or she accomplishes, that person has no real motivation to accomplish or even try to accomplish anything.
The other extreme- unrestricted, unregulated monopoly-game robber-Barron capitalism is also unworkable. There needs to be a reasonable middle-ground.

In Germany, until 1994 (really), being gay was prohibited by law. You could be jailed just for being gay. The incarcerations peaked around the 60s and went down, but still some people went to prison until the early 1990s. But hypocritically, being lesbian wasn't prohibited. One wonders why.
