Great vid... Im over in the UK and id love your thoughts on inner tent material, mesh ir solid. If the tent is a true 4 season in the design re poles and outer feabic reaching tight to the floor etc would you be too concerned what the inner fabric is made from.
In heavy snow a four season surely important for venting in the roof so you don’t asphyxiate whereas three season venting is normally low to the ground. But trying to keep your tent warm by closing vents is a recipe for condensation.
I agree in certain conditions you can use a 3 season tent in winter but it depends what the inner is like I've got both kuiu storm star and mountain star and the temperature difference is massive the wind passes through so easy in the all mesh mountain star so lowering the temp.even in early spring and autumn it gets very breezy inside souch so I only use it in summer now and I got the hilleberg niak as my main 3 season tent because of the solid inner I've used it in winter when there wasn't any snow.the storm star is still warmer tho in winter and can take strong winds and snow loads.
Absolutely, the niak is a great solution for a 3 season tent, and in any wind the mountain star provides very little protection, as it was designed to vent and reduce condensation.
My Tarptent Moment DW is a 3 season solo tent BUT a decent 4 season tent with the optional Crossing Pole cut down 5: and run UNDER the fly, held by 2 double-sided Velcro strips sewn & seam sealed to the outer X-ing Pole reinforcements. These keep the X-ing pole in place in high winds and snow load. Guyed out and staked down PROPERLY my Moment DW is good in 60 mph gusts and steady 40 mph winds (US Weather Service stats) within problems. I stayed in it in an all day, all night and all next day rain storm and no leaks.
I have been winter camping for almost 40 years now,I have never used a 4 season tent my sleeping bag keeps me perfect ,I go out for 2 weeks at a time and I live in northern Canada
Depends on wind and heavy snow, four seasons are burlyer can always run a rain fly off a bigger tent over the one ya got

Those shale basins turn into lakes with heavy rain. There is a reason they are flat with no snow on them. Same thing happened to a friend of mine.

Great point on vents located higher up!

Do you use VBLs?
That's awesome, what tent do you use?
@@gearfool Moss Starlet
i agree for 100 %. And when you use a real 4 season black label tent from hilleberg then you feel real the different.
Absolutely
Absolutely, in critical conditions a good 4 season tent will keep you alive, a true all year hiking tent remains elusive
Really good video man.
Appreciate it!
What tent is that ?
The tent behind me is the Hilleberg Akto. -Brady
Excellent info and thanks for doing the hard research. A candle in a tin can goes a long way for keeping those temps up.
I wanted to test that but didn't have time to get it set up, do you leave it burning all night?
@@gearfool You can...I have a number of arctic candles from my time in the service. Last a long time, we obviously had guys awake on sentry to check.
Thanks for the video!
Thanks Kim! There's more on the way!
Great video, thanks 👍👍🇬🇧🇬🇧
