I left Uni at 160 pounds fit as a fiddle, after a few years of work I ballooned to about 230 pounds. At Uni, I walked, cycled everywhere, couldn't afford fast food, had two part time jobs that were mostly on my feet as well as belonging to a cross country running team for the Uni team, then after graduation to a 9-to-5 job, where I drove into the office car park, sat all day, got drive through meals and when I got home, sat on a couch watching TV until bed, so looking back it was no surprise the weight piled on. That was hard to reverse the damage but I managed to get back down to 175 pounds, I took up hiking as well as a diet & daily exercise regime. I think James Bond was a massive influence on that journey.

David I hear you say you don't take supplements. Did you know 50% Americans are deficient in magnesium, and a leading symptom of magnesium deficiency is anxiety/depression?
As a nutritionist and someone on their own Operation Pinnacle, I would highly suggest you (and your wife) get a routine blood test to see how your nutrient levels look. I'm booking my mother in for one next month as I would rank in No.1 on list of importance moving forward on a quest for excellence. I hope you and others read this and it makes a difference.
Something everyone should do at least every five years.

Happy birthday for yesterday. Just a short message, I've been watching your channel for some years, very good by the way, but not made my opinions or myself known to you. My reason for commenting today is because this video was particularly inspiring. Tomorrow this Englishman, even though is senior to you by nearly 10 years, is going back to the gym to get "fit for my age". Last thing, at some point in the future I would like to put my opinion on No Time to Die as to why I'm slightly in the camp of your friend Joe when it comes to your slight negativity on this particular film. If you're interested in my theory please let me know. Happy birthday again.

I loved this video! It resonated pretty hard when you were talking about growing up with your grandmother as your neighbor and your Star Wars figures to keep you company. I grew up on a farm and it was exactly like that! My best friend was my dog! Also, at 4:55 - look what a Hollywood couple you both look like!

Great Video!! I am only three years behind you myself. And I really need to start a workout routine again. I loved the dancing around, because I will do that from time to time as a feel good thing. It kind of reminds me of Jack Lemmon. In almost all his movies he would do some kind of self dancing thing, goofing around, but just a feel good thing to do. It does make you feel good to just be a little quirky and not care. At our age I don't think it can be said enough!!! STRETCHING!! Stretch and stretch some more. I started throwing my back out a few years ago, and the stretching makes all the difference in the world.

My New Year's Resolutions, to be achieved by December 31, 2023, are:
    1) To develop the skill to paint realistic paintings well enough to be able to sell them;
    2) To have the fluency in French of a French citizen with a high school education, i.e., know 5,000 words; and
    3) To start shooting pool again by buying a much needed new stick, taking lessons again and getting in regular practice time doing ball drills.

I think ppl put too much of an emphasis on supplements without mastering the basics first. Nutrition eating the correct foods (basically just eat real food from the land not processed junk) in the correct amounts and staying hydrated, consistency with a balanced training plan and getting walks in, sleep and recovery. Until ppl are doing those things consistently I wouldn’t even look into supplements. With maybe the exception of D3 depending on where you live and how much sun you get. Magnesium is also good for sleep and recovery.

I'm 32 and not in my best shape. I'm active and mostly healthy, but not where I want to be. Last few months I had a bad arm injury and then the stress of working four different jobs and not sleeping definitely did not help. I'm hoping to use 2023 to hit some strength PRs, maybe run a 10k, get to the appearance where my body image issues stop somewhat and increase flexibility. And improve my mental health for better sleep. That might be the toughest part.

As always - great content and very relatable. Up until the pandemic hit, I was a gym rat - always had been. Eating chicken and brown rice nonstop, in the gym 5-6 days a week etc. In great shape, but not a lot of “life balance”.
Two years out and I’m still trying to figure out that balance again. Still work out, but not nearly as intense. Down probably 25 lbs of muscle - but kind of ok with it. (Also not eating 4 lunches a day!)
We’ve built a home gym, but there’s less equipment than I used to have access to.
So what’s my point? I’m climbing a new mountain - and that’s ok! You don’t have to stay on the same mountain forever - in fact it’s probably good to change the view!

I can't even begin to tell you how refreshing it is to see someone with a personal gym that doesn't include a bench, barbells or machines. I'm a lean guy and with my genetics it's nearly impossible for me to put on a lot of weight. Friends say that I'm blessed, but when I was young I wanted the big shoulders and big chest almost like Schwarzenegger. All the guys I know who used bench presses and machines to become like that are now out of shape with man boobs. You put too much weight on eventually as you get older everything will eventually stretch or sag. None of us can beat the clock.
I'll be 50 next year and I'm happy to be lean and what's kept me physically fit for so long are pushing and pulling exercises mostly involving my own body weight. I still use a chin up bar that my dad bought me 40 years ago. I still have the old Dan Lurie plated dumbbells he left me.
I follow a similar diet thanks to my parents who started me out very young and also never drank around me which is perhaps why I've stayed away from alcohol having only 3 to 4 drinks a year.
Great video man, thanks for being so open and candid. Keep up the good work. Not sure Bond would approve of you cutting down your drinking though.
P S. There's a great interview out there with 70-year-old actor Stephen Lang who revealed that after bulking up for the first AVATAR, his body was surprisingly brittle. He's slimmer now but claims he's more fit than before thanks to Bikram Yoga. Something to consider trying as we all get older. I know I am.

Trust me David, you don’t need professional trainers or to obsess too much over diet. I am 66 years old and have trained as far back as I can remember - not long sessions - but enough to keep me fairly ripped and still building muscle even my age. So, fear not, at 55 I still considered myself a relatively young man and at 66 I can still bang out 80 slow and deep press-ups and 95 slow and deep press-up using raised bars all within an hour after doing strength exercises in the morning. If I have any advice to give, it is to be consistent in training regularly. Once you have reached a good level it is much easier to keep fit than it is to get fit from scratch.
