Ahuizotl - The Water Beast (Aztec Mythology)

- The Ahuizotl is one the Aztecs' many monsters of mythology which grabs its prey with a hand on its tail, drowning them in the depths below. This has to be one of the more frightening creatures out there, especially if you lived on the island city of Tenochtitlan!

In South Africa, they have the Tokoloshe.
My grandma told me stories about the workers on her farm who used to put their beds up on stilts so the Tokoloshe couldn't reach them, and when my grandpa would hunch over with a cane and make wierd noses at dusk, they would run away screaming, thinking the Tokoloshe was there 😅

>Believe in water-inhabiting beasts hunting humans on the shore

Its a greta story to keep todlers away from the water edge
''Aye cuitlahuac jr don't get near that or the ahuizotl will get you and fucking drown you and eat your eyes and nails''
Please keep up this Mesoamérica focus.
There is so little online and I love getting to learn more about one of the world's great civilizations!
Pre-Columbian America forever
@TheMoreSubsYouHaveTheGayerYouAre They were #1 if you like Tarascan hearts marinated in chocolate.
@nikola 1809 They weren't toppled by 600 European men, that's BS and a terrible myth.
The Spanish had a force of about 1000+ men and an army of about 100K native allies.
about 80% of the Spanish force alone died. and barely managed to escape the city with their lives.
When they returned to the city, it had succumbed to the disease.
How can you say the Aztecs weren't great when you are so ignorant about them or any Mesoamerican culture?
Maybe you have no interest in Mesoamerica, but Mesoamerica is one of the few cradles of civilization. Europe isn't. They got everything from the Orient.
@nikola 1809
First, google it.
Second, You can check wikipedia.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fall_of_Tenochtitlan
If you are the type of person that doesn't trust wikipedia, then check the sources. If not, you can watch this quick video, on it:
ruclips.net/video/391JhiSsByI/видео.html&ab_channel=KingsandGenerals
Again, you know nothing about the period. You are justs spewing the same myths that people keep saying. That mesoamericans didn't have metallurgy, or that they never figured out the wheel, or that 600 (and some people claim 100) men took over tenochtitlan.
Just look it up, seriously. It's all out there.
@@cdralda while I do think mesoamerican civilization was truy great claiming that Europe got everything from the orient is retarded
Ahuizotl was also the name of the most badass emperor in Aztec history.
Spines on the back, but generally looking like a mangy coyote? I have to wonder how this legend might have influenced the legend of the chupacabras.
So the aztecs built their captial city on a giant lake, and they had legends about a monster that lived in lakes killing people? Being an aztec must have sucked
It seems the perfect way to keep other cities states to try invade their capital.
Or your subjects from fleeing from the tlatuani too all hail xipe totec
@Sebastian Benitez are you ok
@@mr.e3894 right! Let's sacrifice him
@@carlosa.n5100 ahuevo!
It sounds like when someone wanted someone to disappear they said the Ahuizotl killed them.
LOL!
still to this day ;)
Guess that’s why,”only the priests could retrieve the bodies.”
As Mesoamerican cultures enthusiast, I really appreciate this series on Aztec/Mexica culture. Didn't expected it on this channel.
Age of Mythology expansion pack with the Aztecs and their mythological creatures would be awesome!
There's no "h" sound in Ahuizotl. In Classical Nahuatl it would be pronounced "ah-WEE-tsotl," with a long /aa-/ sound that means 'water' compounded to /witso-/ 'beast' and suffixed with the article /-tl/. "Hui" is just how Spaniards spelled the syllable /wi/; the English would have spelled it "wee".
I do love these very informative videos. Please keep them coming!
I think there was another folk Aztec ghost that was a decapitated human body carrying an axe that went throwing axe blows blindly, people who wandered in the woods by night might encounter him and be killed, others would only just hear the blows getting closer, and run for their lives.
Ahuizotl was also the name of their greatest general who was in power before Montezuma.
Moctezuma Xocoyotzin!!! not "Montezuma"please gentlemen
And the 8th Aztec king.
Or is that who you're talking about?
I really like these more obscure topics, I am learning a lot of new things from your work.
It’s crazy how my ancestors have came up with so many creepy monsters and demons
I love how u guys have been doing two of my favorite historic civilizations (Aztec and Roman). Much love! Would like to see more Aztec history!
Okay this is epic. My favorite “mythological” monster is the Headless Horseman because I grew up in Sleepy Hollow, NY. The town is famous because of him and the story written by Washington Irving, whose grave is in Sleepy Hollow
The Dullahan :)
It's originally from Irish mythology, i wonder if Sleepy Hollow is mostly Irish as well
@@BothHands1
Part of the original Dutch settlement, actually. Might have been incorporated into the local lore from Irish troops stationed in the area during the Revolution, though.
I see you again
The headless horseman is of Celtic folklore. The Celts use to span most of Europe including parts of Germany, France, Belgium, and some Slavic lands. Celts were later pushed into Ireland, Island of Man, Britain, and Brittany. So what is Celtic is the seed of folklore for all types of people. Their are even Celts in the Bible.
I love these tales and antidotes from history. Also the first person ancient soldier speculation. That was really insightful. It’s unique to your channel! Please do more!
You should totally do a video on LIDAR and the discoveries being done in the Peten in the last 2 years! LIDAR (A new sonar technology) has only been used in a portion of the northern Maya world and has recently discovered thousands of cities/buildings/complex edifices/farming valleys/etc. in what is now known as the Peten jungle. Historians have long underestimated the population of Mesoamerica, but in the Peten area alone the LIDAR tech has forced people to re-estimate the population of the Peten area alone in the 1st millenia to be at least 20 million people (and this number will be increased by anyone following the data) - essentially more than half of Europe's population at the time in that one area alone. Because of LIDAR countless new discoveries in the last couple of years are being made, including that there was a Mayan Empire in the first millennia that was ruled by a dynasty known as the Snake Kings
You may say what you want, but nothing will stop me from finding this new pokemon doggo. Gotta pet em all!
From the description (besides the human hand) it sounds like a water possum/Yapek
Well the Aztecs have some terrifying gods they are her about what terrifying beasts they have in their mythology this takes the cake
I love you guys, please do more Aztec mythology and history videos
I'm curious if the Ahuizotl and Chupacabra are "related" in the sense that they are both frightening, vaguely lupine creatures.
seems like they didn't get along too well with the local dogs or something
There is certainly a similarity, im inclined to think that is because of the xoloitzcuintle you can look it up in google is an ancient dog from Mexico and looks alike the chupacabra and ahuizotl, i think the dog from Disneys COCO is a representation, its clever actually because they where supposed to guide the dead to other realms. Im sorry for my clunky english its hard to write in a cellphone
i think jackals and peyote being available in that area have something to do with it.
@@j.2512 So it's the jackals who sell the peyote? I've been going to the wrong cantina.
Same
I love how I learned of this thing from My Little Pony, since the show is heavily inspired by all sorts of Mythology.
Honestly im wondering how many mlp actually knew what ot was before mlp
Will you make the final video in the Siege of Jerusalem Series? it is an enjoyable and educational series.
I had started to work on it a while back but got sidetracked with this series on Mesoamerica and next plan to pivot to ancient China for the upcoming 3 Kingdoms game. I'd like to get back to it after that though and probably release an extra video to accompany it.
@@InvictaHistory sounds great!, i'm really looking forward to it!
@@InvictaHistory your content is amazing!
I am very happy to see all of these Mesoamerican topics being posted. Thank you very much.
More of these! Also it would be super intresting if u made a video on the horses used in battles from decades ago
Very interesting! Thanks for sharing this.
“Few escape the Ahyizotl.”
Don’t I know it.
History and Mythology walk hand & hand. I love them both
What's with humans and making non-aquatic animals aquatic and drowning people? This and waterhorses spring to mind immediately.
I like this episode. You guys should do more of these.
Love your channel
very appropriate & well timed video. I have playing Shadow of The Tomb Raider recently. Inca & Maya cultures definitely interesting in its own ways.
I LOVE your channel -
As Crick1952 said, please keep up this mesoamerican focus. It is just such brilliant analysis
Excellent video very informative
Excellent work here
It's funny to find similarities between cultures in mythology. In Finnish folklore, there's a creature called Näkki, who also lives in lakes and rivers and lures it's victims to a watery grave. Supposedly the Näkki could take the form of a beautiful man or woman and sing like a siren. I guess drowning is a universal, valid fear when living close to water.
Wonder if Näkki and Ahuizotl would get along.
When does part 4 of The siege of Jerusalem come out
Lmao thinking the same thing
These. Are. So. GOOD!!!!
Since it's been recently confirmed that oral tradition holds historical truths (like with the Australian Aboriginal tribes' preservation of Australia's geography to c. 10,000 BC and some prehistoric creatures), I wonder if the ahuizotl is also a preservation of a prehistoric creature of some kind.
Thank you for this vid, I love all this aztec series! Only, Ahuizotl is pronounced “awisotl”, not “akhwizzotl”. In nahuatl (aztec language), the spelling hu- corresponds to an English w- sound, and z- to a silent s- sound 😁
That was cool!
What's wrong?
I don't see your videos in my feed
I thought you aren't making any
Was surprised when i visited the channel today
Wow I didn’t know the Aztecs had urban legend monsters.
I think this creature was influenced by perhaps a species of otter relative to the Brazilian River Otter which is highly aggressive... That's my speculation as in Ireland the Barn Owl could've influenced the tale of the Banshee
I love this video and I would love to show this on my paranormal news show
"Ahuizotl" sounds like "A Weasel"... Ttt.
I kept racking my brain trying to remember where I heard this things name from before I couldn't remember and then it hit me. Dammit! My Little Pony.
I think you're confusing it with the beloved CareBears character, Violent Watery Death Bear.

Can you please make a video comentary on arminius and his conquest to free his people from the roman empire, especially in the battle of teutoburg forest?
This is some Annihilation level mutant shit.
The depiction in the artworks you showed looked mostly, but not completely, different from the My Little Pony version.
He is based on the thing. Though why would he want eternal day if he is a water creature? Daybreaker should really like this guy.
Any chance you can do more on Aztec Mythological Creatures.?
Mictlantecuhtli aztec god of death because of his aesthetics in modern art
I see this as a way not to over fish or pollute the rivers and lakes cause there lives a beast.
A punishment was gout lolol I love it
For real lmao
I have heard that Ahuzotl is in the book " Daring Do and the quest of the saphire stone".
Reminds me of the great underwater panther of Mississippian traditions
The Mississippi seems to have all kinds of crazy stuff in it lmao
BUNYIP of Australia
Please keep doing the total war vids
It sounds like an opossum on steroids. The hands and the tail especially.
Could it have been based on some large ancestor of opossums who have strong tails they can grab with?
Great video, but please continue on the evolution of the roman legions series :'((
Cool pokemon
One day I want be. A RUclipsr and make history videos one day. Do u have tips on that? And the video is awesome !!
Well I first started doing history videos that were 'big productions' in the sense that they were multi-part series styled after the History Channel. While I am extremely proud of these I now find a lot more liberty in shorter videos with a simpler style. It turns out that as long as the topic is interesting the presentation doesn't have to be incredible. Don't let the process hold you back. Find interesting topics, develop a simple format, and deliver it consistently. I make a lot of videos using a basic video editor with transitions between images. Now I've added some slightly more professional animations in AfterEffects but it really isnt necessary.
Thank u! So much it means a lot. U one of the RUclipsr that make these. Really interesting videos about history and it inspires me a lot to do the same I love learning about history ever since I was 5 years olds with dinosaurs LOL so I do want to say thank you for inspire me to try to be a RUclipsr
Wheres the battle videos?
what made you start to make videos on the aztecs is it just an interest in their culture or just wanting to get out your depiction of the situation
Since it’s the new year why don’t know do a video on the Aztec calendar and if they celebrated a new year?
Scary...
This reminds me of the "Water Babies" of Pyramid Lake. It's a Paiute story.
reminds me of el chupacabra just with water... i wonder if this is a early version of that myth
AK Yearling wrote about this creature in her daring do books in The show mlp Friendship is magic. The show made him out to be much bigger than a dog though.
I have a new monster for my DnD campaign! Thank you! My players won't think so tho... hehehe...
the sitting & waiting by the beast is very much like an alligator or crocodile.
"mimic sounds of a crying child" uhhh, anyone else reminded of skinwalkers in the Southwest of the US?
looks like the Chupacabra!
This creature appear in My Little Pony.
Not to be a smart-aleck, but the term is "passers-by": I just made a point of looking it up in the old Funk & Wagnalls.

I hope you get better!
The artwork in the thumbnail is from a book but I forgot the name of it
in the patagonia lakes there are the same creature, the lemisch
Material for a new expansion to Age of Mythology.
Except for the fact it mimics the cry of child it uses the same hunting skills of a crocodile, alligator, camion, or gharial.
This looks like the amphibian beast of Gévaudan with a marsupilami tail.
Ngl the deaths of these people sound like crocodiles, except after the 2 minute mark where it’s just the cucuy but in sterioids
Damn that thing is creepy
How many monsters around the world mimic the sounds of a crying baby?

yeeaah... one of those teeth, nail, and eye eating crocs.
@@ncrikku oh, but that couldn't be the fish just eating the soft flesh (like the gums, eyes, and extremities).
