  • A rare glimpse of early Edwardian Manchester when the horse-drawn tram still reigned supreme.
This looks like the camera is situated on Cross Street looking towards the future Arndale location, going of the "23 Moss & Son" business, if we take the location as 23 Market Street. Corporation Street is then off camera to the left. Clearly the busiest junction in the City.
Take a peek into the early Edwardian era of Manchester with these rare street scenes from 1901, where the horse-drawn tram was still the preferred mode of transportation. This film captures the vibrant energy of the city centre, in the bustling Market Street area.
Interestingly, 1901 was also the year that saw the introduction of Manchester's first electric tram route, which eventually replaced the horse-drawn trams in the film. The footage shows showman A.D. Thomas selling tickets for an upcoming travelling film show to passersby.
This film was part of a series called "Life in Manchester," which was screened daily at St James's Hall during the summer of 1901. It provides valuable insights into different aspects of urban life, such as the growing confidence of women who are shown freely wandering around the city centre. The inclusion of a long take featuring a Boer soldier and a blond-haired boy (likely the soldier's son) reflects the contemporary public interest in the ongoing Anglo-Boer war, which was extensively covered in the media and popular literature such as comics. You can see both the soldier and the young boy walking in the crowd prior to their own short sequence.

The trenches would be welcoming those young lads in years to come, if only they knew the horrors that they would face by the incompetance of generals .

Bet there was a lot of horse manure here, unless somebody had the specific job of clearing it up.😅

There was likely a side business sellling it off to allotment keepers. Or burning it on the home fire. I imagine the odours were intense, smoke, food, rotting food, animals, body odour etc. :)
