CMPD speak after an east Charlotte shooting that killed 3 US Marshal task force officers and wounded

- Three law enforcement officers serving on a U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force were killed Monday after being met with “active gunfire” from a suspect inside an east Charlotte home. A total of eight law enforcement officers were shot, including four Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department officers who were injured. At least one of those CMPD officers is listed in critical condition.
The officers were serving together on a U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force when they were shot while confronting a suspect inside a home on Galway Drive. The officers were rushed to the hospital but died as a result of their injuries.
The shooting suspect also died Monday. Two others found inside the home are being questioned by police.
Officials have not released the names of those involved.

The chief didn't sign off on any of it. USMS has 56 different "local" fugitive task forces set up in the US. Their job is to serve high risk warrants and they answer to the United States Marshal for that area. Officers from local agencies are sworn in as special deputies with the Marshals Service and assigned to these task forces giving additional manpower, expertise on the local area, and contacts with the local agency. When you're assigned to the task force you are spending your days tracking people down until you find them and arrest them. There's a lot of time getting run around - old addresses, old girlfriends, former landlords, etc. Once you feel pretty good about knowing where your target is, you hit a place early in the morning while folks are still groggy. Rarely does something go this sideways. I've never heard of needing a police chief to "sign off" on a warrant service - especially in a large agency. The Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force was formed in 2003 and covers the northern half of Ohio (40 counties). Between 2003 and 2023, the Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force has arrested over 55,000 suspects on felony warrants issued by a federal, state, or local judge. They work with 125 partner law enforcement agencies and have more than 350 officers sworn as special deputy US Marshals. That's an average of 7 arrests a day across Toledo, Cleveland, Akron, Canton, Youngstown and plenty of other small towns in-between - and until this one warrant service went horribly wrong with a similar task force in North Carolina, most of you commenting with all the answers never even knew such task forces existed, how they work, or who they report to. So, shove your 5p system up your ass.

To serve a warrant to a convicted felon who you know that was in possession of firearms, but don’t know the type of firearms, in the comfort of the convicted felon home is not a place you should serve the felon at. Tons of bodycams will have caught it on video. CMPD will usually upload a huge batch of them along with an analysis. That’ll probably take a while.

Law enforcement just made itself more clout. We have had the NICS system for how long and police have not thought while pursuing a suspect for a felony possession of a firearm that maybe the smartest thing would be to ensure that you when fulfilling a warrant that you would not let cops unproperly equip to come on the scene. Second if the failing tactic in which you took action on the suspect. There are better lure tactics to first get this person while they least expect it. For example, if you suspect the individual would have a weapon the smartest thing to do is find a way to use a tactic so he can't fortify their position. This person eventually goes to a store or any location, that would then be the best time to move in on someone because as there coming back to the vehicle they are more vulnerable in the 30 seconds they are trying to load groceries. Ultimately, they will blame gun owners instead of realizing this person was released despite have already been in prison and is trying to use this a justification for a police state. They themselves are making the situations more dangerous and potentially a hostage situation for anyone else in the immediate vicinity. Whos ever command was it charge of this raid need go back and realize the tactics they implemented were what got their officers killed.

There are few protocols that can survive an ambush depending on the circumstances. When LE was rolling in with hardware to prevent such, the BLM crowd whined about "militarization"
And this is why I loved having law enforcement guys train with us when I was stationed at a base in the south east. There was so much that they learned from us about close quarters combat and individual tactical movements while under fire. Our police officers must recieve the funds (including personal protective equipment) and legislative support to learn how to engage deranged individuals in our society. Sending blessings to those who walk the Green, Blue, and Red Lines and their families. It's a tough job to serve others, when some of them want to end your life for no reason.

Absolute worst excuse for a "press conference" I've ever seen. Every speaker was poorly prepared and gave a poor delivery. The victims families and that community deserved better.

Two young officers were shot at a house next to my subdivision last year just for serving a warrant. So sad! My thoughts with the victims and their families of these brave officers.

They should never have approached this person residing in the house the way they did , it’s obvious overshot in house ambushed them , but they weren’t prepared for that , highly unusual for someone to open fire like that

History of having a weapon. He was a convicted felon & caught with a firearm etc etc 🤷🏻♂️ Riot shields 🛡️ and stun grenades, flash bangs, I mean getting him out would have never caused this. With a High threat felon they should have never entered and tried different tactics to get the suspect to exit. This is hard to believe. Shocking. What is going on in this world. I know there is evil in the world and if there is no law enforcement then there is no life. All we can do now is mourn for them and there families. Many people will grieve this day. It is hard to fathom the loss. The pain is deep and the wounds do not go away. This is a sad time for us.

In this video, I see healthy and unhealthy influencers on the planet dressed in uniform, on the street, and in the cars driving by. I live in California, but what I'm seeing in this video from North Carolina reflects the same mob-mentality causing damage to the "vibe" (vibration, energetic atmosphere) as I'm seeing here in my city of residence. The drivers of the cars demonstrated in this video are driving in an organized way that causes mental damage to communities. I do not like to hear about police violence. I also do not like to see passively aggressive people. I'm glad the U.S. Marshals are getting involved. I could use some help here in Indio too.

Wow this is so sad!! I am a huge supporter of all law enforcement and appreciate the job they do!!!! When is the government going to do something about crime? These were felons that had guns! The government spends so much time passing gun laws that do not affect criminals just law abiding citizens. I have read so many cases lately of repeated felons doing really bad things so maybe it time we try something different! Our current prison and court system is not working and that is clear so something needs to change! These four officers should not have died! There blood rest on our court and governments hands!!
