I have two zones running off one circulator pump which is on the return line just before entering the boiler. I see in your diagram the circulator is on the supply line out of the boiler. Does it matter if the CP is on either the side supply or return?
Looks like my system not only lacks a backflow preventer, but also the water feed appears to be stuck in full port (vertical position). The former homeowner thought the best solution for both issues was closing the upstream gate valve.
Is it OK to shut off water flow to heating zone ( To hot water basebords) upstairs and still let the boiler ( in the basement) run as it would normally ?
Well, you wouldn't want to shut off (via valve closing) water flow to that zone and still have its thermostat calling for heat. You *could* turn off that zone's thermostat.

What if you don't have a ball valve and have a balancing purge valve instead ?
