  • Who gets the rights to play at the Metrodome if the Minnesota Vikings and Minnesota Twins have a game on the same day? Well, in 2006, when the Vikings were set to play the Detroit Lions in week 5 of the NFL season on the same day that the Twins were possibly set to play the Oakland Athletics in the ALDS, the answer was... they both have the right to, because the contract was insanely stupid?

    This is very similar to what happened in 1979 with the Kingdome in Seattle among not 2 but 3 different teams (the Sounders of the NASL, the Mariners & the Sonics). To begin with, the Sounders were scheduled on May 27 to play LA at home in a NASL match. However the Sonics had made that year's NBA Finals & Game 3 was scheduled to take place at the Kingdome that same day. What ended up happening was that the NASL (in an effort not to anger the Sonics) at the last minute changed the Sounders game with LA from a home game to a road one. The Sounders only found out about this switch about 10 hours before the game & had to scramble like crazy to get a flight to LA. The Sounders also had to refund the fans who bought tickets to this game. They lost 4-2 to LA. Then to make this story even more crazy, for Game 4 of the NBA Finals 2 days later which was also in Seattle, the Sonics wanted to use the Kingdome like they had for Game 3. However the Mariners had a series with the Oakland A's & the Kingdome contract stated that the Mariners took priority over use of the Kingdome during the spring/summer months, regardless of any other team needing the venue on that day even though the Sonics were playing in a championship series. This resulted in the Sonics at the last minute having to play Game 4 in the significantly smaller Seattle Center Coliseum (now Climate Pledge Arena) & having to refund 22,000 fans who bought tickets (the Kingdome had a 35,000 capacity for basketball) thinking the game was at the Kingdome because the Coliseum could only seat 13,000. As for how the Sonics did they won Game 4 in OT 114-112 over Washington & won the series (and their only NBA title) 2 days later. For those wondering how the Mariners did, the Mariners lost badly to the A's 11-0 & only drew 8,000 fans to the Kingdome.

    Unrelated to the story:
    It's so wild to think that the blurry, fuzzy video you're watching IS HOW FOOTBALL GAMES ON CRT TVs ACTUALLY LOOKED. It WAS that fuzzy. You could hardly see the ball half the time. Reading player names on Jerseys was nigh-impossible unless it was a zoomed-in shot (like when they're in the huddle, lining up pre-snap, etc). Hell, just figuring out player numbers during the action was way tougher than it should have been, given how large the damn things are. Remember the whole "make the puck glow" thing they started doing in NHL games on FOX back in the day? It was because of this. If you couldn't find a football on your TV screen half the time, how were you ever going to see a hockey puck, even WITH the contrast advantage of a black puck on pale blue-white ice?
    I remember it blowing my mind when my wife and I splurged and bought a 48" LG flat screen TV and I turned on my first Packer game and could count the blades on grass on Lambeau field. It was such a stark contrast. It's difficult to express just how much crisper even an old, early-generation LCD 2004-ish TV was over any given CRT. It was like my TV had finally gotten glasses or contacts after stumbling around half-blind for most of its life.

    The Metrodome in my opinion is one of the worst stadiums built for MLB ever. Others on my top 5 are Toronto's Exhibition Stadium, Montreal's Stade Olympique, LA's temporary stadium of the LA Coliseum, and Oakland's Coliseum since the building of Mt Davis. Honorable mention includes Sicks Stadium, the Trop, Joe Robbie.

    There was one last potential for issue in 2009 when the Twins were set to host a tiebreaker game against the Tigers. The Vikings hosted a Monday night game that week against the Packers. (Pretty big deal because of a certain player.) Twins had to play on a Tuesday in what would be their win in the metrodome.

    • @WaltGekko
      @WaltGekko Год назад

      And as I remember, if the Yankees had their way, the Packers-Vikings game would have had to have been moved to Green Bay because the Yankees, as the #1 seed in the American League were supposed to have the choice of whether to start their series with the Twins on Tuesday or Wednesday but lost that because the playoff was needed to determine the Wild Card. That wound up not mattering as the Yankees won it all, however, that could have been critical because if the Yankees started on Tuesday, they would have had a day off before Game 2 of the ALDS.

They had to play the game early so they could convert the field and stands over to football so the Golden Gophers could host a NCAA Football game that night, and then after the football game they had to convert it back to baseball because the Twins had a 1pm central time game for the season finale.

    Collin, i remember in a live stream you said Mike martz deserved to be in the hall of fame. I tend to disagree. Dick vermeil built that team from the ground up, and while martz made a revolutionary offense, he wasn't a good head coach. He only won 3 playoff games, and he made some baffling decisions, like playing kurt warner in 2002, after he sucked, over marc bulger, who was playing great. He was a great offensive mind, but he shouldn't be in the hall of fame

    Since the last four ALDS involving the A's went the distance, there was a good chance game 5 would've been necessary in this series as well. What probably would have happened in that scenario was the Vikings play on Sunday at the Metrodome as scheduled and the Twins/A's game 5 gets moved to Monday night. This was during a time when MLB didn't schedule an off day for travel between games 4 and 5 of the division series. Thankfully, that problem has since been rectified.
