The society rewards us for being stupid. The stupid survive and get a couple of goodies while free- and critical thinkers can be isolated, imprisoned, or worse. I'm a critical thinker but i definitely see the value of being "stupid" in this world.
Yup, very true, wish I could like your comment a thousand times! I find that people constantly assume I must be as stupid as they are, and they then get angry when they see that this is not the case - and that's when the abuse starts! I have come to the conclusion that it's best to pretend to be stupid - but this is far more difficult than one thinks, lol! For example, people expect me to be unable to cope with everyday life (a comment I heard just yesterday: "you cannot be trusted with electrical equipment" - this from someone that has never met me). How can I then pretend to be what they expect me to be, to keep them happy and thus prevent them from getting aggressive and abusive, when I am too well spoken to be of that low intelligence level, dressed too well and have to mention (in context) that I work for a living? I have been arrested for asking critical questions, my career has been destroyed for the same reason and my reputation has been so ruined that nobody in my town even speaks to me. So yes, it's definitely safer to pretend to be stupid.
I've been let go from jobs for speaking up about accepted company practices of ignoring or violating lawful policies to have a safe work environment, both physically and mentally. People were afraid to go against harmful practices because they might be fired and get a bad reputation so would find it hard to be employed again. They eventually burned out or got unlawfully fired too. Yet I see this time and time again. When will people wise up and stand up against bullyism like this? They never win by allowing themselves to be ab*sed.
It could also be called lazy thinking. A lot of people are too lazy to form their own opinions, possibly because that would mean spending time informing them selves first. It's easier for them to just acquire the opinions of others.
I remember when I graduated high school in 1970. Many of my classmates actually stated, "I am through with learning, I am not going to study anything else for the rest of my life." Several of them are in the grave now from dumb mistakes such as trying to use an acetylene torch to cut open a propane tank to make a "free Barbeque grill". The rest are mostly chronically poor. Willful ignorance is not the same as stupidity, but it does cause intellectual blind spots. I've met several religious extremists who believed in nonsense but were otherwise quite intelligent, but any time logic or reason contradicted their faith they rejected it. Many , if not most, folks believe what they want to believe the facts be damned. I admit that I myself have fallen victim to this type of thinking in the past, and may even still be doing it now, despite trying very hard not to do so. I also admit to sometimes caving in to social pressure and pretending to believe just to get along. This is also why I see the mixing of faith and politics as a huge red flag.
Embracing critical thinking and being willing to be wrong, no matter how invested you may be, is the only way to avoid it. However, I see a society caught in a nasty cycle of preconceived notions kept strong by confirmation bias and echo chambers. It's gotten to the point where you just pick a side and let them tell you what to think.
While there is a lot of stupidity all around us, to blame everything on it is a kind of ignorance in itself, preventing further understanding of what actually happens. People become ignorant and easy to manipulate for various reasons. It's important to understand what those are.
People don't become ignorant, Einstein. Everyone is born ignorant, then graduates to delusion, then perhaps graduates to knowledge, and for a few on to Gnosis. Not breaking news, has been taught in India for about 5000 years. Sounds like you don't have an Internet connection. Google Vedanta ignorance.
One problem with curing the problem of stupidity is that, as invalid ideologies become more sophisticated, their adherents, especially the ones who truly understand said ideologies are hokum, will create pseudorationales that mimic reason. This provides these invalid ideologies with some inoculation to criticism for a while. The hope of those proffering the snake oil is that, by the time the public realizes the fraud, they will have seized enough power where the ideology can now be enforced through sheer force. Does it matter to these villains that what they are selling is ultimately destructive? No, as most of them figure they will be long dead once posterity decides to hold them accountable for their atrocities.
There's a difference in logic and reasoning. Logic has a formal structure and rules that need to be learned and skill in applying them need to be developed. "Pseudorationales" are what every day reasonings are made out of.
“Heinlein’s Razor” : “Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity, but don’t rule out malice.” Both probably have their origins in Goethe’s "The Sorrows of Young Werther (1774)": “Misunderstandings and neglect create more confusion in this world than trickery and malice. At any rate, the last two are certainly much less frequent.” - which is much less punchy.
I'd argue that malice is stupidity. Both cause unethical outcomes, which is what defines stupidity in the first place (negative utility). From a more enlightened perspective, what some would describe as "malice" is in truth its opposite, when unethical individuals are opposed, even violently if needed. Thus being unethical is merely a subset of being wrong, whether violent or not, while violence used in the right context is ethical. "Malice" is far too commonly used to mean violence, which from a childish perspective is "evil" or something similar.

I totally forgot about Bonhoeffer - this was a great trip down theology lane. One problematic thing with trying to get stupid people to exert more critical thinking is that without the right steer, they can just as easily end up down conspiracy theory rabbit holes.
Imagine being so stupid you don't even understand the definitions of the words you're using... Conspiracy noun An agreement to perform together an illegal, wrongful, or subversive act. A group of conspirators. An agreement between two or more persons to commit a crime or accomplish a legal purpose through illegal action. Theory noun A set of statements or principles devised to explain a group of facts or phenomena, especially one that has been repeatedly tested or is widely accepted and can be used to make predictions about natural phenomena. The branch of a science or art consisting of its explanatory statements, accepted principles, and methods of analysis, as opposed to practice. "a fine musician who had never studied theory." A set of theorems that constitute a systematic view of a branch of mathematics.
I don't buy that. I admit that it's based on my own experience, but I have never met a believer in conspiracy theories that was lured in by people telling them to be more critical. The whole idea about being skeptical is just an empty slogan they like to parrot. My experience is that people who fall for conspiracy theories, do that for emotional reasons. They feel special. They feel like they have finally seen the truth. They get blinded by that feeling of revelation and spend all their effort ignoring or rejecting everything that does not confirm their "truth". This is ironically what theologians have been doing for ages...
Sharing this video with those you'd deem need to hear its content, will simply be an exercise in futility.. They'd simply justify their beliefs and actions, and view you as some sort of threat.. They'll either step aside from the nonsense of their own accord and have a think about it of their own free will, but more than likely you'll NEVER change their mind.. For those that try, i wish you well & the best of luck..
I would gladly share this video with everyone around me who needs it... unfortunately, those who need it the most are the most likely to disregard or even make subtle threats if I even dare challenge their world (one I am unfortunately shackled to, in my current situation). Never forget; external liberation is a privilege, internal liberation is a responsibility, one shared by us all.
i'd a related moral defect is the willingness to remain willfully ignorant, esp when the underlying reason is specifically (even if subconsciously) to avoid having to face the truth in light of a conflicting world view. This willful ignorance is not just stupid but also dishonest.
I am glad I saw this video. It makes me feel better about my opinions and attitudes toward the human race. I am glad I am not the only one that feels this way. What scares me is, stupidity will, WILL be the cause of the eventual demise of the human race. You can fix ignorance but there is no cure for stupidity.
Maybe this partially explains the advent of 'pack mentality'. Like a motor cyclist, who, on his own, mostly obeys traffic laws and shows some consideration to other motorists, but as soon as he joins a pack of other motor cyclists, his mentality changes dramatically (becomes stupid), throws caution to the wind and behaves as if there are no road laws, and becomes an inconsiderate fool.
It takes a lot of work to explore alternatives. It hurts emotionally and psychologically to discover/admit one is wrong. There is also the incredible power of the herd. Just watch a football game where it seems the entire stadium goes berzerk either in joy or anger. It's incredible how swayed individuals are by the masses. This isn't so much stupidity as it is human nature to stay within one's comfort zone. I'm not defending this --it's a critical and crucial weakness of human beings and it is really, really difficult to change.
Ignorance means lack of understanding on a particular matter or subject while stupidity means not caring or apathy, despite proper understanding and continuing as if nothing matters!😒😵💫

It doesn't help that social media continuously provides a steady diet of junk and ignorance.
Without social media that “steady diet of junk and ignorance” was only one sided and considered “truth”… that in itself is terrifying.

Stupidity is the manure that Evil and Malice thrive in.

While there is a lot of stupidity all around us, to blame everything on it is a kind of ignorance in itself, preventing further understanding of what actually happens. People become ignorant and easy to manipulate for various reasons. It's important to understand what those are.

My dad always said if EVERYONE is doing it, or thinking it, examine it closely.

Descartes had the best explanation for stupidity: it’s when the will to act is greater than understanding.
"Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity." Hanlon's razor

Conspiracy
noun
An agreement to perform together an illegal, wrongful, or subversive act.
A group of conspirators.
An agreement between two or more persons to commit a crime or accomplish a legal purpose through illegal action.
Theory
noun
A set of statements or principles devised to explain a group of facts or phenomena, especially one that has been repeatedly tested or is widely accepted and can be used to make predictions about natural phenomena.
The branch of a science or art consisting of its explanatory statements, accepted principles, and methods of analysis, as opposed to practice.
"a fine musician who had never studied theory."
A set of theorems that constitute a systematic view of a branch of mathematics.
Unfortunately, conspiracy theories have been right more than 50% of the time. We live in strange times.
