So, two observations and viewpoints. First being that when it starts off in pitch-black and we only see her face from far away, I think her face is meant to symbolize the moon and that a "Broadway baby" only gets so long to finally rest and repose. The zooming in from a long distance could be to show how long it takes for them to fall asleep once the day is done. Second being, it's the thirties. With that being said, big, extravagant, and Art Deco were yelling from the rooftops. I think that they were emphasizing depth and shapes. Also, while zooming out shows that many actors/actresses have crazy schedules, not just one dancing couple, as was the main focus, but hundreds of thousands...which is why we then see a hoard of them tap dancing. I know it was probably just experimental and could've just been having fun with it but I always try to find a hidden meaning, if there is one to be found.

Filming dance was a real challenge at first. Busby Berkely invented a method, by cutting away to "mug shots" all the time, as opposed to Fred's later grueling 50 takes method. Here I think they "mastered" the Berkly method. I can tell you, cutting dance scenes is brutal, both the sound and the motion have to be cut together, it was considered too tough to do at first, and then some came to master the skill.

@@thedriveinmoviehistory5327 Makes sense. I like what I've seen so far though. I value the early productions and silent films, for they are the beginning of the advancements in motion-pictures.

someday someone will put the whole 12 minute sequence on here---you couldn't duplicate it today

You can't, the You Tube Copyright Check Robot would block it totally. I think it is closer to 17 minutes, but I could be wrong. If nothing else, it is fascinating to watch. Taking over a minute for the little image of Winni Shaw to fill the screen alone is so different than anything else I have ever seen. Not a big fan of the Ramon and Rosita section, though. Love it when all those tap dancers get going.

. . and hopefully when they do, it will be in the correct aspect ratio, unlike this clip. . .
