So he should have been comfortable doing that, many dudes who run the board and direct the show can be incredibly useful and funny, but they can also get too egotistical or uncomfortable not being the center of attention. As opposed to Karl Pilkington who was a producer and didn't want to be famous at all, but Gervais brought him out for the world to see. Opie tried to be the center of attention, Karl Pilkington avoided it, but his ability to be funny outweighed that. Opie made a solid mistake many producers make.
