I've watched a bunch of videos on the moeller technique and Tony definitely explains it the best. This was the first explanation that I actually understood
Something that may help you. The up stroke is something that is often overlooked or people assume it's in there, it's a free note - also that upward snap should be relaxed & mostly wrist. Practice 2 strokes alternating into 3, it'll help strengthen that upward motion. Also, a single roll fingers w/ one hand, moeller the other, alternate.
you all prolly dont give a shit but does anybody know a method to get back into an instagram account?? I was stupid forgot the login password. I would appreciate any help you can offer me!
@Royce Eliseo i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site thru google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff now. Seems to take a while so I will get back to you later with my results.
Doing the moeller technique with both hands, that evenly, is way more difficult than he's making it look! lol! I notice that he also keeps his elbows pretty close to his sides, just like Dennis and Billy Cobham. John Blackwell kind of keeps his pointed out, probably because he hits things at multiple angles, to control the tone.
i don't know, but it isn't necessary. first do the stretch one hand at a time, and then try to do it with both hands. it is a bit awkward, but certainly possible, just try :)
Lol, weird... I didn't know there was a such thing, before I was sort of doing it. Moeller is helping me out so much more with my left hand. Thankfully~
When the sticks both hit at the same time (not a flam) it is called a "Stop". You have single, double and triple stops. This is done on instruments like a xylophone, marimba or a vibraphone.
I've been practicing using these techniques, except I have been utilizing a pillow as my surface as Tony recommended. The only thing I can't figure out is how to practice double stroke rolls on a pillow. Any tips fellow drummers?
@KingsofComedy I thought so! But yeah, it makes since that he'd play slower for his warm up video. I never go off blazin' in warmups. It usually takes me an hour to properly warm up and be at my best for a performance.
@apercussionist91 Yep, he was in marching band as well. There are pictures of him when he was young. although it wasn't neccesarily dci or anything. thats probably how he developed his chops
I just don't understand how the whole Moller technique thing works. Is it basically like doing a roll because when I'm doing it, it's exactly like the first thing he did with the wrist and i just don't understand it.
+ShaRMz6g Carl Palmer and Joe Morello played the fastest paradiddles I've ever seen. But i think paradiddles are great at slow and medium tempo, they lose their beauty at higher speed.
Man I wasn't dogging Tony, from a medical standpoint I mean. The longer you stretch the better, because your muscles become more flexible and relaxed. Stretching is very under-rated.
RLRR LRLL (normal paradiddles accenting the 1st note of the 4s) RLRLRR LRLRLL (double paradiddles accenting the 1st and 3rd notes of the 6s) RLRLRLRR LRLRLRLL( triple paradiddles accenting the 1st 3rd and 5th of the 8s) hope it helped you :)
1:27 when i did that in my home one of the stick went right out of the window flying and it hit hard on a thief who was trying to infiltrate my neighborer house lmao thanks tony!!
@inimicalODDITY well just so you know i didn't have to look up anything on wikipedia because i happen to know my stuff. and idk what your talking about with your graceful grace notes because i'v played quite a few in my day and they have always been low.... cuz thats how you play a flam.
For someone that listens too both jojo mayor and Tony royster jr a lot I would say that there is no comparing the two at all. They are both better than each other in their own genres of music. If tony tried to play dnb he wouldn't be able to touch jojo mayor point blank and simple and vice versa. So don't compare them because they play differently
@Audi0Phil Stretching before you play doesn't really do anything. There are some ways to warm up without touching a pad, but the actual act of stretching with the sticks won't get your hands warmed up. I stretch my back and such before a gig, sometimes my legs to get a bit loose. But stretching your hands before playing doesn't accomplish anything.
Tony, I love listening to you play. You are awesome dude but, what is up with that hat or whatever 7 those glasses bro? I mean I guess you got the right to look how you want but, to me you look like a herb bro! Lol. Nothing but love for ya.
@kevinhall0056 thank you bro. im not saying im anywhere close to touching tony but i do the exact same thang for warm up. minus the stretching. cuz im lazy.
Classic mistake... You need to stretch AFTER your session not before!! You gotta do warm up exercise before your session to heat up your muscles and tendons and stretch only after to dissipate lactic acid in the muscles. Ask any pro athlete if you wanna learn more.
Not the fastest paraddidles I've heard but still near unbelieveable..... Mike Macintosh (current battery director of the Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps drumline) can play them around 310 bpm, Tony probably played them around 230 or 240. But I wonder if Tony has been learning from some corps guys..... His technique looks like it and I'm surprised he still plays traditional.
@kylosme i really dislike when people respond with arrogance. i put it in quotes because i obviously didn't know the official term. anyone can look up a general definition on wikipedia. anyone that has played a flam knows that the "grace note" involved in the execution isn't necessarily always graceful.
I've watched a bunch of videos on the moeller technique and Tony definitely explains it the best. This was the first explanation that I actually understood
MrJdstuff Understood but can't do it. hahahahaha

I'm late to the Tony Royster fan club but all in. He's fantastic. That's for the stretching exercises those really work!
I love you Bro!! You give me enthusiasm to play drums watching you!
Hes such a beast hes perfect in all his drumming techniques
Someone with a brain finally posted something on a Royster video. Thank You.
First stretch is amazing to do before you play. I've done it for years, and tell every drummer i know to do the same.
that warm up is better than me right now xD
this is a great drummer!!!
I know he's a busy guy but I'd like to take some lessons from him and just really learn what he truly knows. such a good drummer
"Which is a dope technique..."
Dood
Well for someone that has played for over 22 years should be that good. His paradiddles rocked.
Those paradiddles blew my fucking mind....
@Wowurgaylol he's by far one of the best drummers i've ever heard.
Something that may help you. The up stroke is something that is often overlooked or people assume it's in there, it's a free note - also that upward snap should be relaxed & mostly wrist. Practice 2 strokes alternating into 3, it'll help strengthen that upward motion. Also, a single roll fingers w/ one hand, moeller the other, alternate.
thank you Tony
i love how he called the moeller technique 'dope'...it is indeed dope
I've been working on the moller tech. for years, and I'm constantly trying to refine it!
Wish Buddy Rich could have seen this guy play. He would have been blown away.
you all prolly dont give a shit but does anybody know a method to get back into an instagram account??
I was stupid forgot the login password. I would appreciate any help you can offer me!
@Billy Ellis instablaster =)
@Royce Eliseo i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site thru google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff now.
Seems to take a while so I will get back to you later with my results.
@Royce Eliseo it worked and I actually got access to my account again. I am so happy:D
Thank you so much, you saved my ass !
@Billy Ellis You are welcome =)
"The first thing I do is grab some sticks"
*puts sticks down*
o_O
TR jr you make your dad very proud.Thnx. for the tip. U Rule. Mike
awesome pointers! really like the stretches and 3 hit moeller technique w/ both hands
Tony, You Da Man my little Bro!
@TheDice2008 Could you elaborate? Thanks
"Grab some sticks" (puts down sticks) lol
lol

Tony Royster is even amazing at stretching
The paradiddles were cool, but when he did the doubles and triples at the same speed... Now that blew my mind.
what a perfect moeller....great tony
what size of sticks was he using here?
i feel like he was about to come outta of the screen and punch me in the eye...hes too good.
man preciate ya tony this is a very gud method and warm up
At 1:04, exactly how is that stretch accomplished? Is he double jointed or something?
i don't know, but it isn't necessary. first do the stretch one hand at a time, and then try to do it with both hands. it is a bit awkward, but certainly possible, just try :)
Man!!! he is strong !! those strokes are screaming
Lol, weird... I didn't know there was a such thing, before I was sort of doing it. Moeller is helping me out so much more with my left hand. Thankfully~
if only i can play as good as he warm up, man i would go places

When you're Tony Royster Jr., you can wear whatever mother fucking glasses you want to wear.
@KingsofComedy I thought so! But yeah, it makes since that he'd play slower for his warm up video. I never go off blazin' in warmups. It usually takes me an hour to properly warm up and be at my best for a performance.
Would be nice if he explained the Moller technique with focus on german grip vs french grip. The technique is different I assume?
great routine! as always
That made me warm!
@apercussionist91 Yep, he was in marching band as well. There are pictures of him when he was young. although it wasn't neccesarily dci or anything. thats probably how he developed his chops
Really cool vid man
Awesome chops:)
I just don't understand how the whole Moller technique thing works. Is it basically like doing a roll because when I'm doing it, it's exactly like the first thing he did with the wrist and i just don't understand it.
that was the fastest paradiddle ive ever heard!
4:39 I had my speakers cranked up, had to duck under the table from that machine gun!
beast
SHOW OFF!!! Lol great stuff man!
DOPE!!
I didn't know paradiddles could be played that fast hahaha
ShaRMz6g Dude that ain't even fast...
Ok where's the vid of them getting played faster?
+ShaRMz6g Carl Palmer and Joe Morello played the fastest paradiddles I've ever seen. But i think paradiddles are great at slow and medium tempo, they lose their beauty at higher speed.
+FrustratedTurtle lol
Roberto Ricci joe morello faster than TR ???
Oh well- anybody wanna buy a drumset?
learnt a lot
Man I wasn't dogging Tony, from a medical standpoint I mean. The longer you stretch the better, because your muscles become more flexible and relaxed. Stretching is very under-rated.
the last video he did, he was trying to talki all agnsta, what happened?
didnt he make a video on this before?
RLRR LRLL (normal paradiddles accenting the 1st note of the 4s)
RLRLRR LRLRLL (double paradiddles accenting the 1st and 3rd notes of the 6s)
RLRLRLRR LRLRLRLL( triple paradiddles accenting the 1st 3rd and 5th of the 8s)
hope it helped you :)
nice!
did he ever march drum corp?
HEYYY my yamaha oak custom snare is in the background (the sparkly one)
That "thunk" on the pad is hella satisfying
The only thing that really works is the stretching part...can't do the rest.kkkkkkkkkkkk
Wait a second, how is this supposed to work without a surface that gives you rebound?
My leg certainly disagrees with hitting it.
It works on control so you're not just diddling everything
I agree...
oh! excelent
1:27
when i did that in my home
one of the stick went right out of the window
flying and it hit hard on a thief who was trying to infiltrate my neighborer house
lmao
thanks tony!!
Anyone know what Hat hes wearing?....
@inimicalODDITY well just so you know i didn't have to look up anything on wikipedia because i happen to know my stuff. and idk what your talking about with your graceful grace notes because i'v played quite a few in my day and they have always been low.... cuz thats how you play a flam.
Tony Royster still hear,,, yeh I haven't seen Tony Royster JR do much
Dang... and that's just the warmup.
I love how at 3:41 he stops and says, "With no flams." He's kinda challenging you in a way!! :)
blast beats!!!!
So does Tony use fingers at all??
4:15-4:26 That was the fastest and cleanest paradiddle I have ever fucking heard. Holy shit that was sexy
You can hear his strokes are pretty fuckin clean. Time to step up my drumming to the next level lol.
I do that stretch slowly with a small dumbell, about 3 lbs is aq good weight. .
Tony r Jr is a beast
@Audi0Phil Stretching before you play doesn't really do anything. There are some ways to warm up without touching a pad, but the actual act of stretching with the sticks won't get your hands warmed up.
I stretch my back and such before a gig, sometimes my legs to get a bit loose. But stretching your hands before playing doesn't accomplish anything.
nice warm up technique
wth was that at the end?
Tony, I love listening to you play. You are awesome dude but, what is up with that hat or whatever 7 those glasses bro? I mean I guess you got the right to look how you want but, to me you look like a herb bro! Lol. Nothing but love for ya.
@kevinhall0056 thank you bro. im not saying im anywhere close to touching tony but i do the exact same thang for warm up. minus the stretching. cuz im lazy.
@PositivelyBored The whole point of warming up is to get blood flow to your arms wrists and hands not look cool.
Classic mistake... You need to stretch AFTER your session not before!! You gotta do warm up exercise before your session to heat up your muscles and tendons and stretch only after to dissipate lactic acid in the muscles. Ask any pro athlete if you wanna learn more.
You give lessons to one of the best drummer in the world ...
+pa b I think every pro athlete stretches before a performance, in fact, stretches quite a bit... What's notable is that most people know that ...
have you ever done a 8 on a hand
Yup
i have that practice pad... but i cnt make it sound like that
The powerstroke 3 on the snare drum behind him looks awkward.
His technique looks like it and I'm surprised he still plays traditional.
p.s. those drum pads are kind of rare now
Tragedy Swiftz I have one
Remo practice pad? Why do people give these bad reviews?
exelente bro´
Its better to stretch for about 20 minutes and then warmup with rudiments for about 30. You will get way better results.
This is hilarious to watch in 2.0x speed!
2:06 ... "a dope technique that will allow you to be able to play...."
@kylosme i really dislike when people respond with arrogance. i put it in quotes because i obviously didn't know the official term. anyone can look up a general definition on wikipedia. anyone that has played a flam knows that the "grace note" involved in the execution isn't necessarily always graceful.
@UKdrum1 his signature stick
Blast beats!
@TheDice2008 Explain?
He made the Shyt look easy!
tony royster has good technique
