    Cool man, What I've done is recorded a sample of my OWN snare, but not only that, I recorded it with every other drum mic going, so that I get the overheads and other mics to capture the room ambience. Most guys use stock samples, but I think it's smarter to customize it to your actual kit sound so it sounds more natural and blended. Arm all of your drum mics and hit the snare like 15 times hard and good, then when you go back and listen to the hit you like, don't just solo that snare mic, use ALL of the mics, render it down, then master that single wave using mastering plugins. Then you can load it to your SD card. I use a Roland TM-2.
    Cheers

      @@DrRealEstateCT totally understand. The hard part about using them the way I do during worship is you have no dynamic control which makes building (which we do a bunch at Church) a little difficult. We use them at my church the same way and it trips some of the other drummers up because you have to know where the trigger is gonna hit and build to that point just before it does and then start triggering for the very last bit to transition back into a normal groove where you want the triggers firing on back beats and fills. We are working on some options to make those sections easy in the future (see trigger mute pedals and “no trigger” patches on the SPD-SX)

    • @nateodrum

      There are no triggers on toms. Just mics. If your tom triggers aren’t working well, adjust sensitivity, “re trigger” and “mask time” settings

    Hello!
    I’m a drummer for a punk band. That being said most of the times I play in bars with limited equipment, most of the time a mic on the bass drum and one on snare and that’s it. So I was thinking about using triggers for my drum set so the drums have a better sound. Do you think it will help? Thanks

    • @nateodrum
      @nateodrum  3 месяца назад

      Hey! That might work. Might take some trial and error to dial in settings to pick up all the fast notes in punk rock. The big plus is isolated and consistent sounds that aren’t picking up any other instruments and making the mix muddy. Might be worth a try! Hope that helps!

    • @nateodrum
      @nateodrum  2 года назад

      Thank you!!! I usually don’t. I have in the past when I had to edit the sample from a loop and the sound is cutoff some. But never to fit the live setting. I try to keep the samples as close to the record sound as possible (usually cutting the samples from record stems) and if the sound engineer wants to add Verb or effects they can do that on their end! Hope this helps!

    Nate, thank you for the video. Very helpful. Two questions; when you connected the snare with the trigger, does that take up a pad also? Are you able to connect more triggers to all four of your drums or more with the SPD-SX, and still use the SPD-SX for other things while performing?

    • @nateodrum

    So I'm not finding it anywhere, it seems like alot of people just cover how to use them but not how it's actually routed to FOH. Any tips on how that's done? By that I mean if say I'm running triggers on snare and 2 toms how would that be separated to FOH so they have control of each or is that not possible?!

    • @nateodrum
      @nateodrum  2 года назад

      I am planning on making a new video that includes this topic. I run all 4 outputs and route snare and kicks in separate channels for triggers and SPD-SX pads

    • @radulica
      @radulica 2 года назад

      Hey, not sure if you're still looking for an answer but basically you have 4 outputs. LR & 2Sub-outs. You can route each trigger on a separate output from the SPDSX or use LR for the played samples and the sub outs for a kick & snare for example. I panned my kick hard left and my snare hard right, and exported it stereo, so when it's triggered, it only goes into 1 of the outputs (so L of sub out). Take that straight into the DI and then into your mixing board.

    Hi Nate. Are the dual zone triggers on the snare able to distinguish between a snare hit and a cross-stick hit and therefore able to trigger 2 different sounds?

    • @nateodrum
      @nateodrum  2 года назад

      Hi Bill! You know, I’m not super familiar with the dual zone triggers. As far as I know you can set it up to do different sounds (like a rim and standard snare) but I’m not sure they are super distinct. I think it’s more for rimshot and no rim shot. I could be wrong. I’m pretty sure the trigger would pick up your hand hitting the drum doing a normal “cross stick” and trigger both sounds. Wish I could be more help.
      I use the single zone “tom” trigger on snare to avoid any issues with different sounds and send it into a single channel of the stereo 1/4” input.

    Thanks for sharing this! I've been running acoustic triggers from Drum Sample shop at church for a while now, but we've been dealing with a few milliseconds of latency. I dragged the samples into Ableton and noticed just bit of silence before the samples started so I cut that out. The issue is still there, so I'm wondering if it's a setting on the SPD-SX. Do you have any ideas for how to fix this?

    • @griffinwilliams1044

      Hey Ryan! Thanks for the kind words. I’m planning to do an updated more in-depth video soon with even more details!
      Sounds like they might be routed incorrectly. It’s hard to explain without looking at your SPD-SX.
      I would google search “Roland SPD-SX output routing” and make sure that it’s going out the same output the SPD is going out of. It should default that way.

      Hey Pedro! I usually put together a few different sounds from “That Sound” samples (find them on splice) and mix from together to make new samples. I often mix those samples with unique snare sounds from record stems of the artists I’m playing with. For church stuff check out “drum sample shop”. Those are some incredible sounds ready to go for the purpose of triggering support sounds!

    Love it dude! What sensitivity level are you running on the snare? I'm struggling finding a good balance for ghost notes / builds and rolls.

    • @nateodrum
      @nateodrum  3 года назад

      Hey Kyler! My setting are pretty extreme. First thing I do is make sure I have the “Trig In” (under setup) set to the trigger model I’m using. That will automatically dial in a lot of settings and get you started. Then I go to “Pad Sens” under Setup and set the pad sens to 1 and threshold to 24. On the actual Pad settings i make sure “dynamics” are turned off so that every hit that triggers fires at full volume. This means it will only trigger when I hit at the volume I hit consistently for back beats and big drum fills. That way when I’m playing ghost notes it won’t trigger and I allow the snare to be heard naturally through the mic. You can also “build” a small amount before the full volume snare trigger kicks in. This setup is not ideal for a broad range of dynamics with the snare trigger but works great for doing a live version of how audio mix engineers use triggering to reinforce the natural sound of the snare. Let me know if you have anymore questions. I really need to do a new video that covers this!

      @@nateodrum dude this is so helpful. Thanks so much! We've been using triggering at my church for about 2 months now but I've been struggling to find that sweet spot on the snare with also having it miced up, battling back and forth between the sensitivity and threshold.

    • @nateodrum
      @nateodrum  3 года назад

      @@goodc713 I totally understand. I’ve been using triggers live for almost 6 years on my touring gigs but recently my church started using them live at the broadcast campus. I set them up the way I know that works and knew there would be a learning curve. So I try to get with the drummer playing each Sunday and talk them through how they work and how to approach playing with them. The main thing is that you have to adjust how you play a little. Long building sections on snare require you to hold back to stay under the threshold point and use different sources to create the building energy. We are about to build a “mute” switch for the snare trigger so we can turn it off in the long building sections and lean on the mics and then unmute when we need them back on for a chorus. Another option is to have your patch with kick and snare triggers and follow it with a “blank” patch that is your normal kick trigger sound but no sound on the snare trigger so you can play all you want. And maybe repeat that pattern a few times so you can keep pushing the button for next patch and swap between the normal patch and the blank snare patch!
