When I worked for United Artists theaters and was picking up the trash in the theaters, after the credits finished the film would keep going and I would see the ending leaders of the films, back in the 1980's. Another theater chain that I worked for had sensing tape at the end of the credits to stop the film.
This is what happens when non soundtrack content is pulled by the optical soundhead. The barcodes make a rapid buzzing noise. The checkerboards do a slower paced buzzing/popping noise The writing, splices, pieces of tape, etc.. make pops and scratches.

Couldn’t agree more. One of the least favourite bits about going to the cinema when they still had 35 mm prints. The noise was too much.
