A Perfectionist Approach to Headlight Restoration | Honda Civic Project

  • Headlight restoration is nothing new on RUclips and there is plenty of basic tutorials. This video is (my take) on how to restore headlights semi-permanently and keep them protected for years, not months!
    Restoring old oxidized and yellowed headlights is extremely satisfying. Not only does it make the car look new, it also helps with safety and visibility at night. Today my Honda Civic project receives one of the best forms of headlight restoration on 20 year old poly-plastic headlights! This method is most definitely a perfectionists approach to fixing headlights, but the results speak for themselves.
    Sanding headlights is nothing new, but I really wanted to go above and beyond with 6 different grits of sandpaper, compound, polish, and finish with paint protection film. The PPF will keep the headlights protected from harsh UV and coating the lights with a ceramic will double the protection. This is part of the major transformation for my budget built Honda Civic that most people will be able to follow.
    There's plenty of headlight "kits" on the market, but most of them fall short in the UV protection stage. Thus requiring you to polish or re-sand the headlights every couple of months if they yellow or oxidize. I think the PPF will help with light protection and rock chips for years to come. Hopefully you guys enjoy the video, because this might be boring for most lol.

    I love these videos, I had a 97 civic lx sedan, worked on it as a friend's mechanic for about 4 years before I bought it, over the course of 10 years hands on with this thing I had touched every nut and bolt at least once. Coilovers, SSR wheels with 205's, 93 Integra rear trailing arms (wide track width) with rear disc's, ex non-abs proportional valve, lca's, front and rear camber correction, borla muffler with resonator delete, GSR dual bend, Y8 short gear transmission, subaru wrx front seats, crv cluster, and 560k miles on original motor. I want another one now after watching these

    Great job on the headlights man, I have a 1999 Honda Civic LX that I restored the headlights. I use 1000 grit, 1500 grit and 2000 grit sand paper, I then use 3M extra cut compound, menzerna intense polish, 3M swirl mark remover and finish with a coat of wax. I been doing this for the past 15 years and has not failed on me.

    Man that is a VERY clean civic. Im having flashbacks of my 2000 Civic EX manual in white. She was a sleeper with the rare Apexi ball bearing turbo kit. I now have a 99 Prelude base that I picked up and have been “de-ricing” the mods from the previous owner back to OEM+ for daily driving duties.
    Earned a subbed, good content. I especially loved the oem front lip DIY painting. I’ll be picking up a P1 style lip and doing the same process you did. Keep em coming, I’m excited to see what you do next with your Civic.
    Edit: I also need to do work on my gfs 8th gen Civic Si coupe. Her headlights needs some serious TLC.

    Good trick to making anything shine that still has clearcoat on it is a combo of Maguire's 105 and Maguire's 205..these 2 cutting and finishing compounds will work amazing and smooth out anything with clear on it to a mirror finish! (Wet sanding may be needed) Then you finalize it with a good compound and wax job. But the way your doing it really is the right way to do it!! Good job!

    • @ALLDAYANTHONY
      @ALLDAYANTHONY  5 лет назад +1

      I used 105 and 205 as staple products for years and loved them. The only issue I had was dusting and staining trim. The last cut was an answer to that problem with plenty of power to cut and finish. Thanks for watching!

    I've done this a couple of times and the sanding part sucks. Do u thinking using a electric sander or random orbital sander would help (at least the big surface) or u think they would generate too much heat for the hesdlights?

      I think they could work at a low setting

      Jr The Op clear film them, new lights with clear film will outlast any car, I will do that as restoring always failed for me. On my other new car though I did PPF right away so it will last 10 years and over

    After the film dries all you have to do is put a coating on it? What coating do you use for that? My headlights are yellow so I need to do this and hopefully they turn out as well as yours did.

    • @ALLDAYANTHONY
      @ALLDAYANTHONY  5 лет назад

      A ceramic coating like Optimum Gloss Coat would work great. But if you’re looking to save some money you could use something like meguiers ceramic wax

    So... Basically, when you see the cloudy white stuff oozing out, you keep working it back and forth from left to right,or up and down? and afterwards it will be really smooth? and it will look amazing, and you'll be very satisfied? did i understand you correctly? Are we still talking about cars?

    What if i do all that but instead of the ppf coating, i use a clear coat? Will it still work?

    • @ALLDAYANTHONY
      @ALLDAYANTHONY  5 лет назад +3

      Yes you can absolutely use clear coat. You would stop sanding around 800-1000 and just spray it on with multiple coats.

    Did this with a 3m kit and a drill , got good headlights but scuffed my paint a lot cause the sand paper made its way through the tape

    Ok so I made a big mistake. I messed up on the final step and used "matte" clear instead of the "gloss" clear on one of my headlights. I caught the mistake before I did my 2nd headlight. Any suggestions on how to fix this issue for the headlight that I used the wrong type of clear coat on? This happened within the last two hours.

    Is there a reason you didn’t leave it a little longer around the edges to tuck the film into the fender and bumper? Just wondering. And kind of suggesting lol. Love the vids!
