A Perfectionist Approach to Headlight Restoration | Honda Civic Project

- Headlight restoration is nothing new on RUclips and there is plenty of basic tutorials. This video is (my take) on how to restore headlights semi-permanently and keep them protected for years, not months!
Restoring old oxidized and yellowed headlights is extremely satisfying. Not only does it make the car look new, it also helps with safety and visibility at night. Today my Honda Civic project receives one of the best forms of headlight restoration on 20 year old poly-plastic headlights! This method is most definitely a perfectionists approach to fixing headlights, but the results speak for themselves.
Sanding headlights is nothing new, but I really wanted to go above and beyond with 6 different grits of sandpaper, compound, polish, and finish with paint protection film. The PPF will keep the headlights protected from harsh UV and coating the lights with a ceramic will double the protection. This is part of the major transformation for my budget built Honda Civic that most people will be able to follow.
There's plenty of headlight "kits" on the market, but most of them fall short in the UV protection stage. Thus requiring you to polish or re-sand the headlights every couple of months if they yellow or oxidize. I think the PPF will help with light protection and rock chips for years to come. Hopefully you guys enjoy the video, because this might be boring for most lol.

I appreciate that!
PREACH BROTHER THIS MAN IS THE LIVING LEDGEND OF THE RED HONDA
i know im asking the wrong place but does any of you know a tool to log back into an instagram account??
I somehow lost the password. I would love any help you can give me!
@Anthony Garrett Instablaster =)
@Caiden Grant i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site thru google and im trying it out now.
I see it takes a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
I would love an engine bay cleaning video. Aspecially from a perfectionaist perspective
I’ve commented this on all your vids but tint the windows!!
It may be in the works!
I wouldn't. Looks way better being able to see the clean interior from the outside
Taylor Vazquez AGREED! Exactly why you shouldn’t tint older cars, especially if the interior is clean and stock 🔥
Noel yah no tiny wtf. Gross
Taylor Vazquez That’s true but in my opinion I just like the look of it, it also helps keep that car cooler and keeping the sun out of his eyes as this is his daily driver
I’ve said it before, but damn I love your videos. The first person POV filming + cinematic shots, the editing, song choices, and especially clean/oem choices and content are just amazing. Makes me want to start my channel up again and clean up my RSX 🤤
Appreciate that man! Takes a little more work but I’m always happy I go the extra mile when I rewatch my videos :)
just do it
“when you see it start to ooze out” 😂😂 man i lost it
Just no right way to say that lol
We do this at my work all the time. It’s crazy how the results turn out 👍🏻
When I watch your videos, it makes me want to go out and buy a 99 Civic for a fun daily
You absolutely should! lol
This is perfect👍🏼 I enjoy DYI products on my own 00 civic and this has been on the to do list! Thanks for the clean tutorial!!
I love these videos, I had a 97 civic lx sedan, worked on it as a friend's mechanic for about 4 years before I bought it, over the course of 10 years hands on with this thing I had touched every nut and bolt at least once. Coilovers, SSR wheels with 205's, 93 Integra rear trailing arms (wide track width) with rear disc's, ex non-abs proportional valve, lca's, front and rear camber correction, borla muffler with resonator delete, GSR dual bend, Y8 short gear transmission, subaru wrx front seats, crv cluster, and 560k miles on original motor. I want another one now after watching these
Great job on the headlights man, I have a 1999 Honda Civic LX that I restored the headlights. I use 1000 grit, 1500 grit and 2000 grit sand paper, I then use 3M extra cut compound, menzerna intense polish, 3M swirl mark remover and finish with a coat of wax. I been doing this for the past 15 years and has not failed on me.
Awesome bro no joke Im about to do this tomorrow and then you upload. I already know how cuz i used to detail for a living but always cool to see other people bring cars back to life one detail at a time.
Hell yeah man. Good luck
I'm glad you kept your headlights OEM. When I had my civic, I went after market, which looked good for a while but within a few months, I switched back to OEM and restored them.
Nice man! Yeah I actually love the OEM look
Hell yeah! Engine bay clean up please! This is so satisfying to watch! Watching from Philippines Btw 👍🏼👊🏼
Man that is a VERY clean civic. Im having flashbacks of my 2000 Civic EX manual in white. She was a sleeper with the rare Apexi ball bearing turbo kit. I now have a 99 Prelude base that I picked up and have been “de-ricing” the mods from the previous owner back to OEM+ for daily driving duties.
Earned a subbed, good content. I especially loved the oem front lip DIY painting. I’ll be picking up a P1 style lip and doing the same process you did. Keep em coming, I’m excited to see what you do next with your Civic.
Edit: I also need to do work on my gfs 8th gen Civic Si coupe. Her headlights needs some serious TLC.
Love these videos man! Recently picked up a civic EM1 SiR and there videos have been very helpful
So happy you posted!💓💓
❤️
Very informative video bro keep doing what your doing , this was from last year but you just helped me out a great deal !
Nice! I love restoring headlights, such a satisfying feeling when you’re done. Definitely do an engine bay detailing video 🙏🏼🙏🏼
I agree! Thanks for watching
Great tutorial, I always look forward to these videos!
Thanks for stopping in to watch!
Dude thanks! Now I can clean the headlights on my Ridgeline and Explorer
This is the best channel ever for useful civic tips and mods!!!
Ps: I don't own one ☹️
Another super great vid! That's really awesome, very pleasant to watch! Keep that going 😄
Thanks man!
Looks damn good man! Great work 👍
I have watched your channel since 2017. Love your vids. You need more subscribers ✌️
Thanks for sticking around man!
Finally Civic vlog! :)))
Sorry I was gone for so long! :)
Awesome videos man keep up the awesome work you’re so very organized cheers from Nova Scotia Canada
Thanks! Will do!
Good trick to making anything shine that still has clearcoat on it is a combo of Maguire's 105 and Maguire's 205..these 2 cutting and finishing compounds will work amazing and smooth out anything with clear on it to a mirror finish! (Wet sanding may be needed) Then you finalize it with a good compound and wax job. But the way your doing it really is the right way to do it!! Good job!
I used 105 and 205 as staple products for years and loved them. The only issue I had was dusting and staining trim. The last cut was an answer to that problem with plenty of power to cut and finish. Thanks for watching!
great video, I'd love to see a engine bay cleaning video, step-by-step
Fantastic results! Looking forward to the next video on lube management. I’m also holding out hope for another Panera review. Well done ADA.
Think I’ll pull in Dane for that topic
ALLDAYANTHONY Maybe save that for when I come visit.
Everybody knows I only operate as a manager when I need to, otherwise I’m all about grabbing my gear and tackling the front lines 💥
Heyy new subscriber here gotta say I really enjoy your videos keep em coming :D
When i ceramic coated my car i used it on my lights too and its been holding up well 👍
Absolutely! Coating is better than nothing at all
How do you not have 100k subs already? Your content is great!
Haha slow grind to the top!
Wujuuuuu new Civic video I'm excited
Thanks for checking it out!
Thank you for showing me what sandpaper you used. Trying this out but with some plastic X compound. It’s for a off-road truck so should do the job for me.
everytime i watch your videos i always picture you as a person in shorts, white shirt, sneakers and have a camera as a head
LOL. that’s not far from the truth
9:01 "going in dry"
Not ideal in some cases
In my opinion, the black housing headlight one looks good too, but still, great work!
Thanks man! I think they both have a good look
Solid! 400 grit would’ve been my choice of start especially to take the clear coat off.
FINALLYYYYY YERRRRRRR 🤘🏽🔥
🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Thanks for the great video. Will be trying on my headlights. Definitely do a video on cleaning out ur engine bay. Solid Alldayanthony once again.
Thanks man. Still trying to put out good content when I can
Phenomenal job!!
Thanks man!
Incredible, nice work
Thanks dude
Nice work man, PPF is the way to go as far as protection, I like XPEL, arguably the best.
So beautiful!
❤️
The professional you epoxy clear after sanding!
My em1's headlights are just starting to get like that. This is definitely next on the list. Never thought of doing ppf on them.
PPF isn’t super common to do, but it’ll help with UV protection and rock chips of course :)
Love the vidoes homie👌👌 lools really clean....you should do one with taillights👍
Thanks man! Taillights typically don’t need the same amount of work, but down the road I’ll polish them up! :)
I’m definitely interested in you doing a engine bay cleaning. 🤤 This Civic is so clean. Also PS - maybe a red subframe brace with sway bar installation? 👀
Hmmmm maybe! Thanks for watching dude
nice clean headlight restoration lens restorer civic
Acetone vapor polishing nets the best results for crystal clear lenses. After that you can put whatever protection you want on it.
Your civic looks nice and clean...
Thanks dude!
This was a great turn out! Definitely gonna try this on mine . What do you recommend to use for sealing the headlight ? Every time they get hit by water they get foggy
The headlights on my 98 Build are actually in good shape. going to just polish anyways because although it looks clean they feel tad rough.
Absolutely love the videos you put out, the time and effort you put into them is amazing!
I'm in Pittaburgh and I'm struggling to get my hands on a clean(ish) civic like yours to also restore.
Any tips?
@Jacob Burnett Will do captain!
I would just be open to traveling to another city to be able to find one that’s worth it
Most people: fuck it just smoke me out.
This guy: CRISP!
Next gen Chrisfix here.
HEYY GUYYSSS!!
Please do the engine bay cleaning video! Awesome work btw
Haha will do! Thanks for watching
I tried to do mine before but I don't have a small buffer so I try to do it by hand I have Maguire's cutting and polishing compounds what is that glass stuff you use that might be what I need. You've motivated me to try to restore my headlights again which I've tried before I'm afraid mines on the inside of the plastic headlight cover that's why
I’m dead af! Haha! Best video!
Haha thanks for watching dude
Where did you get the cart holding your detailing supplies? seems very efficient 😊👍
I second that @ALLDAYANTHONY where did you get that cart? Link please!
Are you planning on boosting it?, your channel is one of the best!
Plans for the motor are still up in the air. Just trying to enjoy the reliability at the moment lol
Anthony great job explaining the process. The clean headlights transform the entire front end completely. Where did you get that cart?
Thanks man! I got the cart from Michaels craft store. I think it was roughly 50 bucks on sale and it’s been awesome
I've heard clear coat causes light scatter... Do you notice any reflacted light. Less dense beam pattern? Very interesting to say the least
I've got to try this on my car. Next you should tint the windows by yourself it would be cool to watch
Oh man I think that would be a sh*t show to watch lol. I can’t tint to save my life
Why didn’t I get a notification?? But useful video Anthony 🔥🔥
Thanks for watching man
If the ppf works for you I might try that because I tried the UV clear coat yellow protectant stuff and no don't ever use that it had something in it even I cleaned it with isopropyl alcohol it had left little squares all across my headlights one time. So yeah that doesn't work to protect them after you buff them up so I'll try the ppf thanks for the video bub
It’s crazy how you can transform headlights, I did this to my civic and ended up cracking it some how
Anyways I love your videos keep it going!
Finally a civic video,
Now the headlights looks brand new, nice job man .
Question tho if I don't have a buffer can I get away with buffing by hand?
You can definitely do it by hand. Just will take elbow grease haha
Im restoring my 2000 SiR lens as we speak without a buffer. Tbh i would use a sander and buffer
Cris fix cousinnnnn 😲 frfr tho love the videos 😎 imagine if y’all did a video together thooo
Haha that would be big leagues for me!
Anytime Restoring head lights I use Jet Seal which yields 12-14 months before yellowing again but if you reapplying before that time seem to stay clear...Love your videos....
Thanks for watching dude
its been so long anthonyyy
Too long my friend!
Heat gun to form the film to the lens. That before and after is impressive
I used a heat gun a bit to get around that bump on the headlight but that’s about it
ALLDAYANTHONY looks good 👍🏽
In the UK, we use sandpaper for wood and Emery cloth for metal and paint on vehicles. Or have I got it wrong ? Thanks
KEEPING IT O.E.M. THEY REALLY HAVE A GREAT LOOK ESPECIALLY THE REAR ONE'S
I think so too! It’s just not often you see clean OEM lights haha
Hahaha thanks for watching man
@@ALLDAYANTHONY YO BRO HOPE THINGS ARE GOING WELL IN YOU'RE PERSONAL LIFE WE SURE DO MISS THOSE VIDEOS
@@ALLDAYANTHONY 9:29
1) D@MN !T
2) FΩ©K
3) $#!T
LOL HAD ME LAUGHING
You should post up video cleaning engine bay I really wanna see it
I wouldn’t tint the windows. Fishbowl eks look the best.. But if you do, try and find the Jdm bronze color
I like the fishbowl look but it’s been so hot this summer 🥵
Any plans on swapping put the single cam?
That shine tho!
❤️
If you have internal fog, remove the headlights from your car and take the bulb housing out, sticks hairdryer on hot and sit it inside the housing. It evaporates all of the internal moister and yellowing, then do the external restoration shown in this video
Didn't get a notification of your vid😢😭 looking clean though 🤤
Thanks man!
I’m not a car expert but I would recommend using the stock air intake. On NAs it best to use the stock one for power, but if you don’t mind the power loss then I’m all for it
You’re not wrong at all! My inner ricer just loves hearing the vtec
ALLDAYANTHONY 😂😂😂 Nothing better then hauling ass and saving gas
Nice vid, where did u get that cart? Looks perfect for small detailing jobs.
Michaels craft store
can you link this headlight? ive been trying to look for these in specific for my '03 civic coupe
I know its old video. But after the clear tint to headlight, how did it turned out after months of abuse.
I've done this a couple of times and the sanding part sucks. Do u thinking using a electric sander or random orbital sander would help (at least the big surface) or u think they would generate too much heat for the hesdlights?
I think they could work at a low setting
Also whats the specs on your wheel tire combo? 16x? Offset? And tire size? They fit the car really nice!!
I have a video going over the wheels but they are 15x7.5!
i wish i saw this before i ordered new headlights yesterday🤦🏻♂️
Jr The Op clear film them, new lights with clear film will outlast any car, I will do that as restoring always failed for me. On my other new car though I did PPF right away so it will last 10 years and over
I need that enegin cleaning next
You got it!
What happens if i sand down the headlight housing with the white polishing compound?
Honda best
Where did you get the front bumper
After the film dries all you have to do is put a coating on it? What coating do you use for that? My headlights are yellow so I need to do this and hopefully they turn out as well as yours did.
A ceramic coating like Optimum Gloss Coat would work great. But if you’re looking to save some money you could use something like meguiers ceramic wax
@@ALLDAYANTHONY Ok, thanks. I'll give it a go and see what happens.
So... Basically, when you see the cloudy white stuff oozing out, you keep working it back and forth from left to right,or up and down? and afterwards it will be really smooth? and it will look amazing, and you'll be very satisfied? did i understand you correctly? Are we still talking about cars?
GET AN INTERGRA!!!
I want one!
@@ALLDAYANTHONY hell yea
But the EK is so clean though
What if i do all that but instead of the ppf coating, i use a clear coat? Will it still work?
Yes you can absolutely use clear coat. You would stop sanding around 800-1000 and just spray it on with multiple coats.
@@ALLDAYANTHONY thanks for replying!! I was asking because i have like a full gallon of clear just laying around
Did this with a 3m kit and a drill , got good headlights but scuffed my paint a lot cause the sand paper made its way through the tape
Never sand your headlights it's a waste of time
Ok so I made a big mistake. I messed up on the final step and used "matte" clear instead of the "gloss" clear on one of my headlights. I caught the mistake before I did my 2nd headlight. Any suggestions on how to fix this issue for the headlight that I used the wrong type of clear coat on? This happened within the last two hours.
Sand it again
Have you been riding around lately in the civic, because I swear I’ve seen you in the meridian area🤔
Haha most likely!
Remove dealership license plate frame on the front
Is there a reason you didn’t leave it a little longer around the edges to tuck the film into the fender and bumper? Just wondering. And kind of suggesting lol. Love the vids!
I attempted to do that but butchered it pretty bad haha
What size wheels and tires you got?
