By the way, those criticizing the owner for not taking care of it or restoring the car, you don't restore an ARTIFACT. This is NOT a collector car, it is a film and historical artifact. You don't restore historical artifacts or antiques, you preserve them as much as you can in their original state. (Side Note: recall Antiques Road Show where those furniture guys say 'This chest of drawers was worth $1 million, but you refinished it, now it is worth $10,000'); i.e., you don't resole George Washington's boots. Anyway, this is from that linked page, where an expert first saw the Bullitt Mustang to validate it was the car: "They needed a third party to validate that the car was, in fact, real. They called Kevin Marti, who signed a nondisclosure agreement and flew to Atlanta on his own nickel. Marti is . . . the guy you call with your VIN to find out your Ford’s original equipment. Along the way, he’s also become an expert at recognizing fake VIN tags. “I walked in to see the car,” he said, “and thought, ‘Here’s another car that looks like the Bullitt.’ I went over, looked at the VIN on the tag and immediately my emotions flipped from skepticism to ‘Oh, my god, it’s real.’ ” Marti marveled at the modifications made for the movie. Underneath the rockers, three metal tubes were clumsily welded perpendicular to the car’s center line for camera mounts. There were holes cut in the trunk for the cords that ran from a generator to power the cameras and lights. Even tape residue remained-on the tachometer to mark the redline, and on the floor, presumably to secure the seatbelts and wires. “Ninety-eight percent of the original car is there,” he said. “It’s an incredible artifact.” www.hagerty.com/articles-videos/articles/2018/01/14/mustang-bullitt-found-real-mcqueen
Indeed, its got the scars and scrapes that happened on film in the movie, you don't cover that up with bondo and a over restored paint job. The camera mounts are still welded underneath the rocker panels and mounts for Steve's close ups are still in the passenger floor pan. Why anyone would want to restore it is insane, then it'd look like any other tribute car
That's what makes the heart race. The original Bullitt Mustang. I am proud to own a 2008 Bullitt and love the road feel and sound of it. Thanks Jay and to the man & son that saved the only Bullitt that still runs.

elmerhdga well you are probably not into cars and that’s understandable but for someone who appreciates cars and their history I found this car to be a beauty!
Armando Elias That’s right! Sean Kiernan and his dad made a wise decision to retain that “old beat up boat anchor” look to make it look like (as much as possible) when Steve McQueen last drove it. That’s what makes it worth over $3 million. If they had restored it to like new condition, then people would not recognize it from the movie. There is another RUclips video of the 2019 Mustang Bullitt premier with Steve McQueen’s granddaughter Molly, which also shows Sean Kiernan, and the same 1968 Bullitt Mustang (alongside a 2019 Bullitt Mustang). In it, Sean explains his rationale for restoring it to that “old beat up boat anchor” look. Sometimes, restoring them like new is not what necessarily makes them the most valuable.
Very cool story. I remember one of the two cars in the movie that they used in the chase had a little dent in the top of the chrome strip around the grill....no dent on this one. It must have been on the car they destroyed since the present owners said that they left this one as-is.

It was pretty clear to me that after the guy's dad bought the car he didn't do anything with it except refuse to sell it to Steve McQueen and let it deteriorate. On the one hand it's a shame it wasn't looked after properly, on the other hand at least it was never changed. The reason it's now worth about 4 million dollars is because it's all-original despite it's condition. Some people would say what they did was smart, others would call it dumb luck.
Ford, "Hey, Mr. Leno, would you like to drive the new Bullitt Mustang?" Jay Leno, "You bet!" Ford, "OK, but you can't go over 17 MPH on our closed course." :(
It's a pre-production car. Probably the only one now. You would do crazy stuff with it ? Not me ! Besides, what a better place and guy to create all the buzz around their car than Leno ?? Guaranteed media impact.
Wow, that is unbelievable...that original car is literally a piece of American movie history, imo a national treasure...this car paved the way for all movie car chase scenes forever, fantastic!!!!
6 grand back then was a lot of money, especially for a used and damaged car. My parents bought a big house in the country with 2 acres of land for 17 grand in 1971
Back in the 1970's a girl at work had a 68 GT 390 FB. She had to keep adding oil to it so she decided to sell it. She asked her boyfriend how much she should sell it for. Since the guy was a Chevy guy - he said it was a piece of crap and was worth only $200 (the body was clean and straight). I cleaned up the car for her and told her to advertise it for $700. She had a ton of calls.
In the fall of 67 I was driving a 59 Impala ragtop with a 425 hp 327 and a guy I worked with bought a brand new Mustang just like the one in this video. He used to pull up behind someone at a stop light just two feet behind them and light the tires so they'd think he was going to rear end them. Funny guy, nice car.
Bullitt Whoa. Brings back memories. Thank you Jay. That must of been something special for you. Sitting on Steve’s chair and driving his car from the movie. 🙏✌️🙏👍❤️😎
If anyone should own the Mustang Bullitt, it would be Jay Leno! His passion, as well as love for all things car related would make him a great collector for this car
Leno's passion is no greater that thousands of regular guys out there. He just has unlimited funds to purchase the toys he wants. The guy who should own it is the guy that owns it.
I guess the windshield had to be replaced to get it registered. Anyway, what a memorable and iconic relic from a great film. I wonder if any of the Dodge Chargers used in that movie survived?. The first gen of muscle cars will be in our memories forever because they all looked different and had so many options to choose. Look around you in traffic tomorrow. For a car guy those were the days.I can understand the meh look of the new cars and their boring similarity for fuel efficiencies sake. But the Mustangs, Camaros, Chargers, Chevelle SS, Thunderbolts, Road Runners, while having some goofy stripes (which I loved) had individual personality. That's sorely lacking in today's cars. Plus a young guy could actually afford to BUY some of that hot iron. Not so today. Not the really hot stuff.
Can you imagine how flawless it would look after Jay Leno owned it for a few months? He's got some talented restoration guys working for him. That thing would look like Steve just hopped out of it.

...and then Ford will be on the path to bankruptcy. Most people are too lazy or never learned to drive stick shifts, but they often want a special edition vehicle.
Mike Vale to be fair Ford’s special/limited edition cars aren’t produced in meaningful numbers anyway so it’s not like they’re a major part of the sales. I think they’re mostly there to drum up excitement among the fan base and further the company’s image as a performance brand.
no cars have souls dude. they are all machines that either work better or worse. it just happens that one of these has a history and the other doesnt. im sure if i offered you a rusted out 60s stang with no significant history or a brand new one to run every day, your choice wouldnt be that easy.
Yowzoe lol naw I rather ride my superbikes and drive in my sports car. I am a porsche guy so no corners for me unless I am hitting the apexes, God bless you though
@@Mr.Grimm99 I am glad that I am not the only one who thinks the same. 2005-2009 Ford actually sold a Mustang. I don't know what the hell they are selling now?
The car sounds horrible... I know it’s attempting to have a classic muscle car engine note... but hearing it on a modern car just makes you think it has engine problems, something's loose under the hood, like a loose serpentine belt pulley... But with the way how it's intermittent, almost makes it sound like an solenoid issue, and that's what people are going to think when they are driving along side you and hear that awful sound coming from your 2019 vehicle... "it has mechanical issues".
Larry, I am talking about the 2019 Mustang.. not the classic.. lol get a clue; it should have been quite obvious considering i said "hearing it on a modern car..."
Raven, I agree. Sounds like a bunch of bearings or lifters are bad from the camera shots off the front passenger fender. The engine sounds like it threw a few rods or something. Sounds like that inconsistent ticking people have been complaining about, but it's consistent when under some power. Sounds like it's about to grenade something through the hood. Not good.
Not much of a Ford guy. But certain models are on my Ford list and a 390 powered pick up or two door is on the list. Lovely car and one great chunk of history. Thanks for sharing her!

Mike Vale to be fair Ford’s special/limited edition cars aren’t produced in meaningful numbers anyway so it’s not like they’re a major part of the sales. I think they’re mostly there to drum up excitement among the fan base and further the company’s image as a performance brand.
Yep...that's fair enough...thanks for your opinion. :-)
Jay you're a true gentleman and all around great guy.
That exhaust on the '19 sounds like a loose fan when you turn it on... drive around thinking where's the damn screwdriver???...
sounds like a Bullitt thing
Awesome story. Very touching. Made me think of my dad.
I prefer the original one. This 2019 one has no soul, it's just a technical powerful thing, just a car. The old ones are more fun.
alex ossel yeah
You've lost your marbles.
The original would probably out run it too. It’s not limited to 163 mph
akc7100 can it even do 163?
no cars have souls dude. they are all machines that either work better or worse. it just happens that one of these has a history and the other doesnt. im sure if i offered you a rusted out 60s stang with no significant history or a brand new one to run every day, your choice wouldnt be that easy.
Nice production jay love that ur never biased
Just bought the 2019 version 2 days ago and I really love it! Best car I’ve ever bought!
Great review. .."Yeshua / Jesus is the way "
Shouldn't you holding a sign on a street corner?
Yowzoe lol naw I rather ride my superbikes and drive in my sports car. I am a porsche guy so no corners for me unless I am hitting the apexes, God bless you though
It's crazy how iconic car's like this would bring huge money
The 68' looks a lot better than the 19'. The 19' body panels are just too slab and homogenized.
Yes. They need to raise that hood back up because it looks like a goddamn BMW now!
@@cemsengul16 dude the only modern mustangs that looked good was the 2005 up to 2009. I hated the redesigns after
@@Mr.Grimm99 I am glad that I am not the only one who thinks the same. 2005-2009 Ford actually sold a Mustang. I don't know what the hell they are selling now?
Now that you mentioned it the new ones do look like BMWs
@@Mr.Grimm99 Right? From a distance I really see a German coupe. Only when I see the running horse emblem I remember its a Mustang.
Jay Leno is such as class act.
Hey whatever happened to Jim Morrison's Mustang?
writerconsidered it's in a junkyard in Paris
How can Jay Leno drive this good with his eyes closed...?
This reminds me of John Wick
Great car, film, actor, Legendary !! Keep on going Sean for you and your family .Respect.!
Deja Vu
Stryker Man I'VE BEEN IN THIS PLACE BEFORE
Wow... I am enthralled with that Car as well!
That exhaust sounds terrible. Just use the GT350 exhaust, that’s a sexy sound.
it won't sound like a gt350,totally different engines ya schmuck
TheFuzzyCat I agree sounds really bad maybe it's better in person
Exhaust is pretty. Bad on this one
I hear them in person everyday and they don’t sound like that! It’s the the used a sound over from a 1993 crown vic with 350k on it
5.0 DOHC v8 with Chambered exhaust like in the original , however chambered exhaust sounds best on SOHC v8, doesn't work on a DOHC different tone.
How can anyone dislike a video like this?
Ford why did u change the headlights of the mustang the old one liooks sexy
Great tribute all the way around. Class will always live on.
Almost $50,000 for a mustang?!? You must be joking!!
This was so cool. Love Leno, he’s clean, not political and doesn’t take cheap shots. Just a cool guy
"it has mechanical issues".
noob
He's referring to the '18, ya dumbfuck.
Not good.
Camaro troll.
Not much of a Ford guy. But certain models are on my Ford list and a 390 powered pick up or two door is on the list. Lovely car and one great chunk of history.
Thanks for sharing her!
