I think Cho's sonata 4 movement is one of the best performances in the world. His wild horse-like piano tone makes my heart race. I want to say thank you for the wonderful performance from start to finish.
That section at 3:31 to 4:00 the heaviness in the bass yet not even slightly neglecting the melody... just breathtaking. Most interpretations either accentuate the melody or the bass too much
Seong-Jin Cho reminds me of young Evgeny Kissin, how they both have a lot of rubato and passion. The only differences are the modern microphones, and Seong-Jin uses more pedal

Forget that, what about tempo? What kind of musician is he if he believes this is the tempo Chopin intended? A Chopin specialist, really? What kind of musicians were we if we do not denounce it? Maybe if we begin with that we would find the reason why this performance doesn’t sound agreeable.
as seong-jin cho was the winner of the Chopin piano competition in 2015, I'm sure all the judges who were legitimate piano giantweight masters themselves would not have let him progressed through the strict elimination process round after round and granted him first prize. mind you the notoriously strict judges panel of the prestigious competition would rather leave an empty spot in the winner column (and this had happened for years in a row before) when they deemed no worthy winner emerged in that year.
@@nkwong920 the problem is when we have unreachable or unmusical speeds as per metronome numbers in almost all the works by Chopin, and everyone, judges and performers alike, choose to ignore this problem and just choose the tempo they like, or one that is more athletic or outrageous, to garner popularity. We all have wondered about those weird MM numbers but do not question if the way that we have been taught to read them is actually wrong in respect to the meaning they had in Chopin’s era. If the Chopin Institute were making efforts to conserve or preserve Chopin’s art, they should definitely address this, pronto.

I absolutely love this very clear, yet very heavy and dramatic interpretation.

@@michaelgeorge4643 Yeah, the sheer power and heavy, matt tone in especially that section is otherworldly. Cho is a grandmaster.
감사합니다

Jeez such a violent, metallic sound :(
Very jumpy and with no sense of 'line' - sudden slows and accelerations made for uneasy listening.
