Should we all use the same tire pressure?

    Modern mountain bikes and their tubeless tires can ride amazing- as long as the proper tire pressure is used! This is an often overlooked, but HIGHLY important bit of set up. When I went to my first EWS race back in 2013 I noticed several of the really, really fast French guys would check their tire pressure all the time. I rarely put much thought into it beyond “is it kinda soft but not too soft?” At that level of racing, every detail matters. Noticing this extra bit of professionalism, and the really good finishes that accompanied this, I began to turn into a bit of a tire pressure snob. I went and purchased my own Topeak Smart Gauge, and it’s the same one I use to this day!

    Tubeless tire set up is pretty easy now, but do be sure you have a proper tubeless compatible (UST compliant) tire and rim. Trying to convert non-tubeless parts is not safe, and having a tire unexpectedly blow off a rim is NO FUN, and can be very dangerous.

    Love the guidance figuring out tire pressure. I'm 240lbs guy and I've always ran my tube tire pressure on the rear around 50lbs.

    • @FULLmontyAC
      @FULLmontyAC 5 лет назад

      Michael, I'm about same as you on the scale after adding gear closer to 250. First thing is I totally recommend tubeless, it's been so long since I road tubes I can't recommend pressures on that, but would say 50 still seems high. The process that JKW talked about, riding the same bit of trail while letting out air a little at a time to figure out what feels good would be your best bet. You probably should have a back up tube because when you get to that too low of pressure setting you will most likely pinch flat your tube. For me on my tubeless setup, riding on the rocky Texas trails, depending on the trail I'm between 28 and 30 psi in the rear. Good luck.

    @alecfotsch3533 5 лет назад

    It makes sense that you can run lower PSI on a 29er because assuming the same width you have a larger contact patch. More contact means more support since we're talking about pounds per inch of area. Thanks for a great video Jeff!

    +1 for Cush Core. I rode the lifts all last summer at Big Sky, MT (place is steep, very rocky) WTB Vigilante 2.3", Stan's sealant with Cush Core front and rear and had not. a. single. flat. For the first install, make sure they're warm, it makes the install much easier. I put mine in the oven while it was warming up, maybe 100F for a few minutes.

    I want the next tire gauge I get to read decimals. 2.6 to 3.0 tires can often take more than one pump to go from one PSI to the next. Oddly a pump or two can make a difference. At 17 PSI, I'm pulling the tire off of the rim in turns. At 19, I'm losing that sweet plus traction. 18, 18+1 pump, and 18+2 pumps all have slightly different feels. With normal tires up to 2.4, I haven't noticed this, (but I'm usually 25-32 PSI depending on the tire/location.)
    I've also noticed that some tires that other folks love, I will hate, (DHF I'm looking at you,) but I can't run the tire at the pressure that the fans of that tire run. At 260+ lbs, I'm running different tires and pressures than a 150+ kid.

    Just added Cushcores to my Ripmo (Ibis oem Maxxis 2.5 Exo casings). Only one ride so far. But I think they complicate the picture somewhat, because they reduce the likelihood of burping overall--you can go looow and still maintain a good bead. Really looking forward to your impressions.
    Also interested in any insights on tire pressure and cornering traction. Lots of loose on hard where I ride, and the quest for traction is constant (not forgetting that the quest for better riding skills trumps all).

    @damienbradley9209 5 лет назад

    Interesting...I would think you'd be running even lower pressures with larger volume 29er tires and your lower weight. I'm about 190 lbs and run 18 PSI up front and 21 PSI in the rear on a 29er hardtail with 25mm inner width rims and Maxxis Forekaster 2.35" EXO/TR Tires. Mostly XC riding, small jumps, roots, logovers, switchbacks, and punchy climbs and descents, but I find this to be the best combo of good rolling, grip, pump, and comfort without being bouncy or squirm under hard cornering. I like to get down to the 0.5 PSI level of detail and that's what I settled on for those tires. I also always adjust before a ride after I've let the bike sit outside out of the sun for 15 minutes or so, so the pressure is set to the outside temperature. I think this gets me the most consistent results

    • @JeffKendallWeed
      @JeffKendallWeed  5 лет назад

      Hey Damien, when I was rocking the 29 x 2.6 tires, they were the thinner Schwalbe Snake Skin tires, so they didn't have as much sidewall stiffness as say a WTB Tough or Maxxis Double Down. Also, I'm a frequent jumper, which changes the pressure requirements pretty quick. THanks for the note!

I have been running them for about a year on my Pivot Mach 6 and I think I'll take them out on my next tire change. Not that I've had any problems with them but they do add a little weight and much worse they make tire changes near impossible even after watching the instructional video. Mine got a lot easier the 2nd time around, I think they had stretched out a bit, did both wheels no tools no drama. Biggest difference maker for me was making sure everything was warm. I put both wheels in my mechanical room, next to my furnace and hot water heater. Once I made sure the tire bead was in the dish of the rim and used a bit of soapy water it was hardly any harder than a standard tubeless tire install.

      I find I'm almost always running higher pressure than the lighter folks.

      Yeah, like NoBrakes said, you'll wanna run a little higher pressure. How much more? Well that depends on riding style. Id just notice how many rim strikes or burps you experience, then add more until you don't have those issues anymore.

    i noticed that when reducing tire pressure i have to adjust the rebound to be a bit slower, say 1-2 clicks
    did you fill the same ?

    This is nonsense. Just pump that thing up, squeeze it and release air accordingly. Too much nerdology with the pressure numbers! 🤦🏽‍♂️

      It is definitely NOT nonsense, once I nailed my tire pressure I was surprised by how much grip there was. I now even notice when the pressure is off by 1 psi! Not even kidding!

      It's only nonsense if you don't mind your bike riding like crap or you don't have enough skill to notice the difference.

      Everything is subjective. If you like you’re bike setup a certain way then rock that ish!!
