- Welcome to my book review of "I'm Thinking of Ending Things" by Iain Reid. Prepare for an immersive, unsettling journey through this deeply suspenseful novel that keeps you guessing until the last page.
This was the best book I've read in 2023 and I'd like to talk about why.
Our protagonist, a young woman contemplating the end of her relationship with her boyfriend, Jake, is on a road trip to visit his parents at their secluded farm. All the while, a constant thought lingers in her mind: "I'm thinking of ending things." The story spirals into a disturbing blur of reality and illusion as the drive continues, a testament to Reid's talent in crafting psychological suspense.
Iain Reid, a Canadian author, gained significant acclaim with this book, which was shortlisted for the Shirley Jackson Award in 2016. His keen exploration of the human mind sets him apart in the landscape of contemporary fiction.
In this video, we'll break down the elements that make "I'm Thinking of Ending Things" an unforgettable read. I'll share my thoughts on the plot, characters, setting, and originality of the book, as well as give an overall rating out of 5 stars.
The first part of this review will be spoiler-free, where I'll share my general impressions and thoughts. Following a spoiler alert, we'll delve deeper into the intricate layers of the story, discussing in detail the book's most compelling and thought-provoking elements.

I agree with your interpretation, thats what I interpreted it aswell. At the end of the book, when the pronouns changed, i did a double take to make sure i was reading it right. I apreciate how the 'big drop' happened in the last few pages of the book, it left me on the edge of my seat the whole read.
I LOVED this novel. I didn't even do the audio version and I literally recoiled from the physical book during the "what are you waiting for" part. The only other one that got in my head the same way was House of Leaves.
Love your review style because I can tell you've thought about what you want to say, yet deliver it naturally like a conversation, not a script. You've said enough with light enough spoilers that I'm still interested in the book after hearing them, which is lost on many reviewers in my opinion. Very well done. Definitely gonna check this out when I need a new book!
I know, right? These are the most enjoyable book reviews I’ve ever seen.
Thanks so much Brett. Yeah, what I do is make little notes as I read the book and then before I record the video, I have my bullet points listed on an iPad beside the camera lol. Sometimes I'll take a couple of takes to say something if I mess it up or ramble and then I'll just use the second take. I really appreciate the comment. Thank you!
That's really nice. Thanks!
Oh gosh. I'm so happy to have stumbled across your channel because of your House of Leaves review. I've been meaning to read it but I've been researching whether it's something that my heart can take haha. After watching it, I immediately checked whether you've read this book and you have! It's my absolute favorite thriller, and it really deserves the attention. I'm gonna follow you for more interesting reads from now on! 🙌🏼
That's great Pammy! Yeah this book was a great read for me. I watched the movie recently as well and it was good. Do you think you'll give House of Leaves a try?
@@PaperbackJourneys Ohhh glad you liked the movie! It gave justice to that eery and creepy feeling but I'm not a fan of the ending though. 😅
As for House of Leaves, I'm actually trying to find a copy now. 👀 Seems that it doesn't have supernatural elements (e.g. ghosts and spirits) so I'm willing to give it a try. It's very intriguing!
i read this book yesterday and i love it. genuinly my favorite book ive ever read
Loved this review! Amazing book. I don't blame you at all for reading it twice in a row- I almost did. :)
I knew 30 pages in I’d have to read it twice. Didn’t feel like a real person after
Wow Melly! It sounds like the book had a huge effect on you too. I loved it! Have you read anything else like this before?
@@PaperbackJourneys definitely not! I actually picked it up because it was label at Barnes and Noble as “the most unique book I’ve ever read” by their staff!
You're making me want to read the book. (Loved the movie.)
It's so funny I haven't seen the movie but I had an "altercation" with the lead stars cousin when I lived in Ireland lmao! It was just playful and he and I were both very young at the time. She's a wonderful actress too. I need to check out the movie. You really should read the book though. It's great.
Since this is a reupload, here is a quick recap of comments for anyone who reads comments:
