Tim, you are one of my ultimate role models in life - you're a rather old fellow who has been through a lot, but then you never lost your sense of wonder, and you're still amazed by all the little things in life... like a ruler attached to a string! The world needs more people like you, and like the people who watch these videos. Special shout-out to the camera person, the unseen hero in every single video!
For those wondering, the curved tailor's ruler is actually called a french curve. They come in many forms, and are used to draw perfect curves, both for artists and tailor patterns.
In light of the recent 50th anniversary of Dr Who, I vote Tim to be the next Doctor! All the mad, bizarre but useful things he could bring on to the show as props etc. I can imagine him pulling out something ingenious from his blazer and using it to defeat the Daleks! Just like 10 had the 3d specs and 11 had the Rubiks cube etc.
I love how wacky and superfluous modern gadgets and novelties that other collectors may scoff at, like that gum dispenser or an automatic lollipop, Tim gives consideration or even admiration. Tim is no stick in the mud and that makes me admire and respect him all the more.
Being a Carpenter, I enjoyed this video, I can tell you this, you can really broaden your collection now days, there a many more interesting measuring device's available !!! Even lasers, that measure disrance ! You must have one at once Sir ! Hahaha,,, TY Tim,,, 😁✌
We used to have one of those holographic rulers, It was advertising a pharmaceutical company but when you rocked it back and forth it was a kid doing different karate moves.
Nope, calipers already give you diameter. Pi * D gives you the circumference. His device works the opposite way, automatically converting circumference to diameter (C/pi=D)
At first I thought Grand Illusions was for Illusory devices. But I'm glad there are so many various collections he shows off, Even if it wasn't made for this really!
Guess with this show being from Britain and all, Tim isn't as exposed to the Wrigley company, which has Bubble Tape in almost every supermarket shelf in America.
i learned leatherworking in high school, and the first ruler you weren't able to get is also to help drawing curves when you are making your patterns :)
I remember those slap wrist things as a kid, they stop selling them, or the original versions because kids would slap em so hard, the steel thing would come out of the plastic and slice kids wrists.. who knows if that was actually the case or parents were scared. But I missed those.
That diameter tape is a interesting tape that is potentially useful. I mean in a normal cylinder/circle you can just measure that. But for circular shapes that does not have a circular face, and too large for a normal caliber to reach. You could actually get some use out of that ruler. OF course you could just measure it yourself and divide by pi. But if you do a lot of measure that require diameter that does not have a flat point for access, it could be useful. It's neat because unlike the other rules shown, this one actually does have a practical use. Time saving measurement. Although I don't see it being that accurate.
if you have a much bigger ruler it will make a much deeper sound and if you have a much smaller ruler" *inhales a lot of air * I'm so tired of this shit. "it will make a lot higher sound"
There is a kind of Feng Shui ruler used to determine what is good or bad Feng Shui measurements. It looks like an ordinary measuring tape with added inscriptions.
5:24 I remember seeing one of these yeeeeears ago! I really wish I knew where I could find another. Has no one really released their own ruler of this type since?
My friend once pulled out the metal strip out of the wrist slaps and I told him to hit me as hard as possible with it. My arm went red and I started to bleed (Holding in hose tears) Didn't even cry m8
Tim's collection is a bit deficient in scientific and drafting instruments, which is a shame, really. Pantographs are really fun. As are slide rules and calipers. I like the drafting rulers that are triangular so you can pick them up easily and they have six sides with different scales on them. Also, the clear plastic rulers that let you see the drawing underneath the ruler.
"It's meant for children to make letters of the alphabet. Let's make an A."
10:00
"I think it'll just be an R instead"
Now normally i'd not watch a 12 minute video on measuring devices...but not every video has Tim in it.
If only
Here Tim makes me think about professor Farnswhorth: "And here's where I keep assorted lengths of wire."

I felt so bad when he said sorry about not getting the lucky ruler, he actually seemed upset with himself..
+Urbinlegends I'm sure he was.
We all have times where we go darn, I wish I had gotten it.
@@brianmerritt5410 glad this guy is still kicking, thanks for bringing this back to my notifications
> Tries making an A
> End up with an R
> " Let's try to make an R instead "

+halfdark000 I thot it was, 'Must I explain Everything to you?'
When he first passed that picture of the curved ruler past the bottom left corner, I could have sworn it was a straw hat.
Watched the whole thing. I'd never expected a 12 minute video about rulers would be this fascinating.
I can't stop watching, I think I've almost watched all your videos Tm, well done sir
"All the way up to about 1990."
Which for the 60's, was astonishing.
the embossing of gum could be used for secret messages, and once read, just let it disappear in your mouth :)
Very sensible indeed.

I love this channel, this man has an amazing collection of stuff!
What a neat collection! ooh I like that clear fold-able. That'd be so useful for measuring when I still need to see what's on the paper.
Being a Carpenter, I enjoyed this video, I can tell you this, you can really broaden your collection now days, there a many more interesting measuring device's available !!! Even lasers, that measure disrance ! You must have one at once Sir ! Hahaha,,, TY Tim,,, 😁✌
Oh Tim, the way you describe your toys has always fascinated me. :)
It's okay, Tim. I accept your apology for not getting the lucky ruler.
He didn't apologise, he just said he feels sorry (sore - regretful)
Outsmarted by a children's' letter toy, Tim? I feel for you.
Keep up the good work; I enjoy watching these.
This dude kilt show and tell back in the day.
Diameter tape is very clever, I'd never heard of that!
I've been watching their videos for a while, and finally I saw something from Iran XD
We used to have one of those holographic rulers, It was advertising a pharmaceutical company but when you rocked it back and forth it was a kid doing different karate moves.
"you can eat your own words"
heh
I think my mother has that fashion history tape. She's a seamstress, so it's very fitting.
At 1:15, a plumber would use a pair of calipers and multiply by 2pi if he wants the diameter. These would probably be used by a dressmaker.
+Graboy by pi, I mean.
Nope, calipers already give you diameter. Pi * D gives you the circumference. His device works the opposite way, automatically converting circumference to diameter (C/pi=D)

Major events in history, like the invention of Kamasutra 3:09... Tim is a wise man.
Tim should be boring, but his way of talking is almost mesmerizing.
Where do you store all this incredible stuff you collect? Would love to see that. =)
Guess with this show being from Britain and all, Tim isn't as exposed to the Wrigley company, which has Bubble Tape in almost every supermarket shelf in America.
we have bubble tape in the uk, just not as common and isnt usually sold in supermarkets.
This man like the electric tape measure is Highly Sophisticated
I remember having tons of those mirage rulers. (4:19)

Forestry workers also use the diameter tape measure for sampling trees.
There is a kind of Feng Shui ruler used to determine what is good or bad Feng Shui measurements. It looks like an ordinary measuring tape with added inscriptions.
inches? One inch is about 0,35 banana, right?
+Tomáš Bastl 0.348 bananas, 5.68 ml of honey, 678 mg of cinnamon and 913 moles of sodium chloride.
+jimpozcaner finally I can wrap my head around the Imperial System, thank you very much for the clarification Sir
Russell Teapot You're welcome.
Tomáš Bastl i hate you, you dont have to use this retarded system ;-;
Tim is a low key hoarder.
Perhaps the "optimist ruler" is for measuring when elastic would be used in making clothing?
This guy collects everything
Man I want one of those metal snap rulers
Never thought there where so many different kind of rulers
I remember the gum tape from my childhood.
Thats why i can never find one of these when I need them the most

I need a drink where the hells my ruler

Try looking up the Gerber variable scale. It's a ruler whose scale can
be varied.
Some wrist snapper have these rulers underneath a wrapping
you need to have some angle measuring devices, like theodolites and sextants.
i had a steel tape thing, i put my thumbs against the reel on accident so when it reeled back it cut me...the wound was really deep.
Each inch is pi inches long. Brilliant
This show is a plan to recruit hoarders
Extraordinario.

Tim’s mom: what type of things do you want to collect Tim?
Tim: YES!!
Tim’s mom: t-tim

I have the orange one that’s automatic!
My friend once pulled out the metal strip out of the wrist slaps and I told him to hit me as hard as possible with it. My arm went red and I started to bleed (Holding in hose tears) Didn't even cry m8

I have one with ants on the back but i don't know if they have any purpose
You "Rule" :)

I used to have the bistable ruler. A Pokemon merchandise.
I once got a really nasty cut unrolling a measuring tape
