I had many plans for this channel, but for now it's mainly about Hanzi learning, because my students hate learning Hanzi and I have to figure out how to push them (just kidding, I mean encourage them).

I am delighted with this new channel. I've been learning Chinese for 5 months, alone at home with an app. I also use RUclips videos for grammar and a book to learn the characters. I haven't gotten very far with the characters yet, but I don't hate them. Characters sometimes make it easier to distinguish words and their meanings, e.g. three different “de”. From the very beginning I really wanted to be able to read; the characters are fascinatingly beautiful. It will be a big challenge, but I will overcome it. I am very excited about your upcoming lessons.

I had a problem with learning Hanzi but made my own flashcards of the ones I was studying and write the pin yin and English word on the back , I'd carry them around and look at them kind of like a game , it is surprising how quickly the brain can recognise the words and translations , treat it as a game and have fun , it also helps to collect cardboard and cut it up into little rectangles so the technique gives you pictures and words and hours of entertainment . Good luck with your studies .

我最最最喜歡學繁體中文,因為很漂亮. a notebook and pen when learning new characters is a must for me. I think I have a better time than many while learning the charachters is because I do not follow stroke order. I simply write them, and they look great with practice! your videos are very helpful as well. 謝謝

Just a personal opinion: if someone hates hanzi, why even learn Chinese? It’s one of the beauties of the language, it’s one of the things that makes it unique!

I learnt the hard way by neglecting Hanzi. When I reached HSK 3 I found it very difficult and passed the exam with not very good marks. And HSK 4 was nearly impossible to pass. Then when I was in China I found it difficult to move around. I tried to get a Taxi once from my hotel in Chengdu. I showed the taxi driver where I wanted to go using the map I got from the Hotel. He politely said to me that he learned Pinyin only for a short time in Primnary School and could not remember it anymore; and asked me to go back to the Hotel and get a map with Hanzi. The lesson I learned: yes you might get by without Hanzi but it will be very hard; and without them do not expect to pass HSK4 or higher. Thank you for these lessons Mandy. I am going to persevere this time.

Thanks for sharing your story, Len! That's so true. The taxi driver was telling you the cold hard true fact. For native speaker, we only learn and use Pinyin in the first and second year of the primary school. After that, we don't really use Pinyin, only in a few cases, like learning a new complicated Hanzi. Pinyin is just a tool of helping us to pronounce the Hanzi in a correct way, but in the end, Hanzi is the one carrying the meaning. That's why the taxi driver asked for a name with Hanzi instead of Pinyin, because he didn't want to misunderstand you and take you to the wrong place. He was a nice guy.
And you are right about how far Hanzi can take you to, and how hard it will be without Hanzi. And you are not the only one learn Mandarin in the way of neglecting Hanzi. Many of my students are the same as you. You will never know how much you need it when you really need it.
Even though I am native and learned Hanzi since 6, I still remember how hard it was for me and I literally cried for my Hanzi hand writing homework, haha, I was a kid and couldn't deal with it.
The key is to be patient and be creative. A lot of Hanzi are evolved from pictures, so you can always add a bit of story (in your own version, or maybe take my version as reference) when you are learning Hanzi, that could really help you to memorize Hanzi. Once you understand a certain amount of radicals and parts, things are getting a lot easier, logical and interesting. Every Hanzi will be like a little story, showing you a glimpse of the ancient time.
Good luck with your learning, and hope you enjoy learning 😀

The mandarin characters from Japanese kanji have more more loanword。

Mandarin characters don’t come from Japanese kanji - Kanji are actually just Chinese Hanzi. The Hanzi came first and the Japanese “borrowed” them as the written form of their language. The word kanji literally just means Chinese character.

Nobody cares when it’s hanzi not kanji 😂
