- Abandoned Wheelwright Lane Level Crossing, Coventry, West Midlands.
Location: Wheelwright Lane, Coventry
Date Filmed: 18-05-2021
Abandoned level crossing beside a busy crossroads junction with Winding House Lane and Wheelwright Lane. There was a total of six halogen warning lights (wigwags), four barriers with halogen barrier lights and four alarms (Yodalarms).
Four of the six warning lights were on quite unique post brackets, with two warning lights attached to one bracket on the side next to the junction. There were also directional arrow signs below two of the side-facing warning lights too which I've not seen anywhere else.
Around the crossing there were several signs stating the crossing name and the railway contact number. The currently disused line branches off the Coventry - Nuneaton line, south of Coventry Arena station. It used to run to Coventry Colliery, a coal mine situated in Keresley area. The coal mine was closed in the 1990s and was redeveloped into a industrial estate, now known as Prologis Park. The railway link to the estate had been retained although it has not been used by any trains since the late 2000s.
Thanks For Watching! Авто/Мото
It's in a much better condition than a number of other abandoned crossings, that's for sure. Some interesting brackets and supporting masts holding up some of the wigwags there as well; it's certainly an interesting crossing. Great showcase!
Thank you 😁 Yeah, the crossing itself is in relatively good condition after being abandoned for the best part of 10 years. The brackets are certainly quite unique.
Good video Jamie.
Track seems in good condition. 👍🙂
Thank you 😁 It doesn't look in too bad a condition I agree. Its a shame what could be a useful freight branch is lying unused.
Nice, I saw that on Google maps hoping someone can film that wonder how the barriers still up Nice
Thank you 😊
Nice one
Thanks 😊
Used to drive trains over this into prologis park when i worked for DB schenker. Class 66 hauled 2000 tonne train that originates from northern france full of bottled water. Had to split train in cov yard and trip it up in 2 halfs as the loco wouldnt pull it up the grade there. A class 60 sometimes used and done away with the need to split train as they could pull anything lol. Good times
Oh wow, didn't know about the gradient, thanks for sharing. A shame its all abandoned and no longer used.
@@UKLevelCrossingsChannel no problem and yes the grade climbs up from 3 spires jn (on the branch from cov to nuneaton) to just over blackberry lane foot crossing (if i remember its name right, been over 12 years since i last went in there) then drops abit into prologis. Had to be careful not to slip to a stand if it was greasy, plus on way out with 20 empty cargowaggons you had to be careful not to run away downhill back towards 3 spires jn.. All good times. I had the pleasure of working the first water train out when they first started using prologis park and also worked the last one out before they shut it. Yes shame its not used anymore.
Nice!
Thanks 🙂
Excellent Video!👍🏻 That’s a shame to see the crossing in this state.
Thank you 😁 Yeah it is a shame.
Cool ! Remember this having 2 broken red lights when it was operational.
Great video 👍
Thanks 👍
Thanks 😊
Hope it’s operational again one day
Probably the better looking abandoned crossing compared to the rest but nevertheless, hopefully someone can rescue this or parts of it for preservation before it gets too bad or becomes vandalised. 🤞🏻
I saw a video of this crossing a couple of days ago. Great video!
Thanks 😊
It still looks like it could be activated at any time.Could you imagine?
That would be spooky 👻
Is this level Crossing even work?
I think it still would work but it hasn't been used in years.
Now I want to see how I would look like when it’s on!😭
At 1 mins 39 secs of the video is the sight where the signal box was located and at 29 secs of the video was where the church was situated until it was knocked down for the road to be built up to Pro Logis. This line was double tracked in the 70s 80s and there was loads of coal trains daily hauled by shunters. A distant memory now .I dont think this line will ever be used again but I do hope I am wrong. Well done for taking the time to film it
Thanks 🙂 I didn't realise there used to be a box here. Looking at photos of it online, it didn't look very big. It's a shame a line like this has fallen into such a state. Maybe one day it will be used again, especially as such infrastructure like the level crossing is still in place, which is still in a somewhat decent condition.
Why did you delete your videos again?
Hi mate they were deleted because I do not have the time to keep my channel updated with regular videos .I also do not have the time and money to travel to do filming like I used to .I tend to film just locally and then that is not always possible. Thanks for your question and good luck with your filming
@@scruffwoodscruffwood6505 Oh well, you could have just kept them up anyway, so we can watch them over and over again...
Did you not download them?@@TheosTrainsWalesOfficial
Cool. Are there plans to ever reopen this line?
Not that I'm aware of unfortunately.
Nice video Jamie! 😎👍🏻
Thank you 😁
@@UKLevelCrossingsChannel No worries! I'm glad you reply to me! 👍🏻😄😄 thank you by the way! 🫡🙂👍🏻
Railway track is in good condition It is mothballed?
Yeah, unfortunately it's not in use.
What caused it to get abandoned
Coal mile closed so the line was no longer used. More information in the video description 😊
Ah, it's been a while since this was filmed. @scruffwoodscruffwood had some old clips of this from 2007, but they got taken down recently. My local crossing, Robertstown, was abandoned in 2017, after the Hirwaun Colliery was demolished, but the crossing may be reopened for passenger use soon once the South Wales Metro resignalling project is finished. Plus, this crossing is a "prototype" AFBCL, like Gilfach Ddu!
Hi Theo! Aw I remember watching scruffwood's clayfield video with the FGW 180 passing and the old halogen Wigwags lol. I miss those days. Back in 2013
@@universaltrainsstudio8534 Same. My grandfather was from Evesham, and lived there until he died in January 2020.
@@TheosTrainsWalesOfficial ah right, I'm sorry to hear that Theo!
Theo's Trains Wales Yeah, I vaguely remember watching that video years ago. Pity the line closed so early.
Y
Hope it’s operational again one day
Maybe, although I doubt the crossing will remain as it is if this line reopens
