- An ordinary citizen is trapped in a telephone booth. Despite the attempts of passers-by to help him, he cannot be freed. But things go to another level when the mysterious workers who installed the booth that morning take him away, device and all, to an unknown destination. On the way, the prisoner realizes that he is helpless in the hands of sinister forces that lead him to an inexplicable and atrocious destiny from which there seems to be no escape, and from which none of us can consider ourselves safe.

There always comes a point in a new friendship when you ask, "Have you seen la cabina". There's a group of folk in their late 40's who saw this back in the 80's as kids, that Sunday night on BBC2 after Roots had finished its UK premier on BBC1. This remains the scariest film I have ever seen!
Yup, I was there! Absolutely terrified.
This is a masterpiece, it has left a mark in my memory for years!

Believe it or not, after this film, telephone booths recaudation plummeted in spain and the principal actor had to do a sketch explaining it was all fantasy and bla bla bla...Funny. People wouldnt close the door "just in case",
As a spanish film student who grew up loving British television, I'm somewhat proud this movie got to you guys and made an impact.
Fue tal la psicosis colectiva que provocó que absolutamente nadie se atrevió a encerrarse en un cabina durante un tiempo. La facturación en las cabinas cayó brutalmente, tanto que el Estado a través de Telefónica "obligó" a Lopez Vazquez a realizar un spot en el que entraba y salía de una cabina diciendo que no pasaba nada

Great restoration. I watched this in the UK when I was 10 or 11. It was shown as part of a series of horror movies - the usual Hammer movies with vampires, werewolves, aliens etc - I watched this, at first really not seeing it as a horror movie - feeling cheated - but by the end, quite shaken. I was too young to understand it, but this was my first taste of true existentialism. I watched it again tonight and I see things I missed then - and strangely, the central character no longer looks so old.. : ) It's an amazing piece of work. Thanks for making this great copy free to view.
I think it caused a lot of impact in Uk, about five years ago my English teacher in London when he knows that I was from Spain he started to comment on the movie in the middle of the class. I was very impressed because he remembered it in its entirety, for him the movie was very funny. The face of my classmates because they didn't understand anything, :)
Not only in the UK, I live in the Netherlands and watched it when I was around 6 or 7, with my parents. Way too young ofcourse, but they too did not realise it was a horror until it was too late.
@@cerezzas i taped it when it was first shown,interestingly i lent my copy to Mark Kermode when he put a shout out on Simon Mayos Friday film slot years back..sent me a nice thank you letter. Now if only i could find a short semi animated film about an eagle with a bald ladies head that kept wanting to eat people.it was like a terry gillam type cartoon but guy in striped suit looked like Julian Barret from boosh..
A truly superb piece of art, brilliant acting, stunning locations, unforgettable score and amazing camerawork. This was the film that caused my brother and I to jam one foot in the door of any telephone box we went in for years afterwards - it started as a joke but we never stopped doing it, such was the impact of this film. It reminds me of the BBC TV adaptation of 'The Signalman' starring Denholm Elliot, a time when TV productions were never afraid to push the boundaries and lean towards art instead of catering for the lowest common denominator as it does now. This is a film to be proud of, I wish there were more like it. Once seen - never forgotten!

I saw this movie on tv growing up in Canada in the early 80's when I was 11 years old. It was in my aunts house with my five cousins and sisters all scurrying around the house. The adults were busy so I was the only one in the living room watching it. I only caught it a few minutes after the beginning of the film but more than enough to get the story. I had never in my life seen such a tragic, horrible tale. I felt so bad for this man and wondered why no one could truly help him. Who were these maniacs that transported him to that warehouse and left him to die? Who would do such a thing?
It wasn't until I watched it recently that I realize it's a metaphor for death itself but not a heroic or a serene, peaceful one. It's terrible, tragic and painful with lots of ridicule and abandoned hope along on the way, Not the most positive view. Dramatic, maybe but without much else to redeem it but melancholy, dread and angst. It stayed with me for years. I prefer stories where the hero does something, anything meaningful, instead of being just the victim of a cruel fate. If anything, maybe this taught me the ugliness and senselessness of that idea and feeling.

Ahahah, same. I saw this movie on TV while the adults were busy. I was 9 or 10 and my sister was 6 or 7. Truly a scary film. This movie haunted me for years. Then my sister and I had fun scaring each other by hiding in the dark, then running like a ghost and shouting "LE MONSIEUR DANS LA CABINE !!!!" (we are French. "The man in the phone booth"). LOOL

Qué buena crítica al cinismo e insolidaridad humana con la necesidad de los demas y qué buena metáfora sobre la soledad del necesitado al que nadie ayuda incluido el sistema que únicamente se limita a apartarlos y esconderlos donde nadie les vea y no molesten. Simplemente sublime.
Había una frase en Star Trek III que decía algo así como "el bienestar de la minoría supera el bienestar de la mayoría", o lo que es lo mismo, si solo uno en nuestra sociedad está mal todos nos tenemos que volcar para que esté bien como el resto de nosotros y así siempre cada vez que uno esté mal. Hoy lo que está de moda es si una persona está mal pues es su problema, que se busque sus habichuelas como yo busco las mías... y así nos va...

Al español siempre se le ha dado muy bien mofarse y alegrarse de las desgracias ajenas.
Una estupenda película con un actor extraordinario, lo que empezó como una comedia acabó en terror. Todos los seres humanos tenemos muchas cabinas de las que tenemos que liberarnos, hay cabinas de tipo moral, hay cabinas de tipo educativo, hay cabinas de tipo mental y las hay de tipo económico. Cada uno tiene que ver qué cabina le aprisiona e intentar liberarse, ahora hasta el teléfono móvil puede encerrarnos sin necesidad de cabina.🙄😬
Un cortometraje estupendo,una obra de arte que todo actor y estudiante de cine deberia de ver.

@@anamcdwmont El protagonista representa al antiguo regimen, no hay salida excepto cuando llegan los bomberos, que representan la fuerza, pero entonces es llevado por empleados al deposito de cabinas. Impidiendo asi su apertura.
Obra maestra de Mercero.
El almacén oscuro de cabinas con víctimas dentro representa a todos aquellos que están con el antiguo régimen y que, como elementos viejos e inútiles, son apartados de la sociedad. Ahora bien, la paradoja es, la cabina no tiene línea, es fachada, pura ilusión, ya que no funciona.

As much as I love this for nostalgic reasons, the thing that bugs me is that they set up another telephone box in the same square at the end. Surely once they realise that the guy has gone missing from the area people will start asking questions.

Lo vi de niño hace más de 40 años en televisión y me llenó de terror. La explicación de la película es que no importa entender el por qué de los operarios, ni toda la infraestructura. Lo importante es que dentro nuestro sentimos ese terror de quedar encerrados y no poder hacer nada, y que nadie pueda ayudarnos, o no les interese hacerlo, o se burlen de nuestra desgracia. La indiferencia del resto. Y que no tengamos escapatoria, de que en una situación así ya no nos pertenecemos, porque perdimos la libertad, la esperanza y todo lo amado que creíamos poseer, estamos indefensos. El único destino es la soledad y la muerte. El miedo primitivo que llevamos desde niños a que nos pase eso.
Bueno. Tu interpretación del mensaje de la película es aceptable; pero no era esa la intención del cortometraje, sino una dura crítica al franquismo . La asfíxia, la opresión, la falta de libertad, la humillación, la degradación humana que provoca en un ser humano un régimen tirano del que no podemos escapar . La cabina, en este caso es una pura metáfora.

Por supuesto que fue esa la intención del cortometraje.No por lo que diga yo, sino explicado por los propios autores de la obra .
Obsesión por la dictadura criminal franquista ? Cualquier amante de la libertad, la democracia , los derechos humanos y la dignidad de las personas nos obsesiona y rechazamos los regímenes totalitarios que atentan contra las personas. Fielmente reflejado en este cortometraje

La parte del inicio me recuerda mucho a situaciones "típicas" de hoy en día en la sociedad, como ver una situación desastrosa y como principal reacción tomar tu celular y grabar. Es brutal como nos resulta adictivo sacar provecho y/o entretenimiento de los problemas de los demás.

Saw this on TV when I was young and I have never forgotten about it.
I was scared senseless back then, watching it again today still freaked me out. Its so well put together, the limited dialogue adds to the whole uncomfortable feeling, even the music as joyous as it is, still leaves you feeling unsettled. I have never been in a phone box because of this 😂😂😂.
Can I ask, at the end did it ever say anything about "cutting down the population, one person at a time" or something similar, I remember that been added to the end scene but maybe that was for the uk broadcast.
Don't remember that on the spanish broadcasts. I saw it in the early nineties. I was home alone for some reason and they aired it around midnight, after an episode of Northern Exposure. I must have been 12 and I was scared shitless.

I too watched this when left home alone with mum and dad in the pub. I thought about it in detail for MONTHS and remembered it to this day. It’s utterly terrifying. Better than most “horror” genre films of the modern day. Great Spanish filmmaking.
Yes same. I think it was on channel 4 in the UK. I watched it with my mum when I was about 10 in about 1990. I remember it was a woman in the box but it was over 30 years ago! The man running at the box and that ending. One of the films that ill always remember and so nice to see it again
I also remember seeing this on TV in England back in the early 80's. I never forgot it for some reason. I assumed it was a Spanish film and when I went to Spain years later even asked my friends dad about it and he couldn't remember it.I never thought I would see it again. Thank God for youtube.

Great to finally see a restoration of this wonderful little film. I first saw it many, many years ago here in the U.K. when it was shown as part of a series of horror movies that the BBC used to show on Saturday nights. Usually, it was Hammer and Amicus films, but occasionally they would show something a little different. This film must have really had an effect on me because I've searched for it for quite a few years, first on VHS, then DVD and Blu-Ray, all to no avail. Initially, it doesn't seem like a horror film and it's not until it's almost finished that you realize just how dark it actually is. It really is truly disturbing. As stated elsewhere, in tone, it's actually closer to a Twilight Zone story, rather than an out and out horror one, but it's certainly powerful. A genuinely amazing piece of film making which deserves far more recognition.

I searched it out as I had a vague memory of watching it as a kid. I think it must have slightly traumatised me to remember it after all these years! 😂

I think it was only planned as a "filler" to be dropped if the cricket game ran late - but Viv Richards and Joel Garner saw that it didn't.
Always thought it ironic that he doesn't walk straight to the kiosk, but only attempts the phone call as an afterthought.

Lo recuerdo perfectamente, era un niño cuando T.V.E. la paso por los años 70. Ahora la revisión me ha parecido impactante, claustrofobica, rompedora, original, y la interpretacion de Lopez Vázquez es magistral, ahora puedo poner nombre a esas sensaciones de pequeño solo me dio MIEDO, pero si entendi por que la premiaron no pudes quitar los ojos sobre lo que ocurre " masterpice ".🔥

This was suggested by a listener as an answer to my local BBC radio stations daily quiz. Some of my fellow listeners remember this with horror and I thought I'd see if I could revisit it myself. I'm the right age (48) to have Watched it sneakily as a child too and be struck by its horrific simplicity.

Oktober 1974 im Schweizer Fernehen gesehen und ich war damals 13 Jahre alt, dieser Film hat mich bis heute verfolgt und jetzt habe ich, bin jetzt 60 Jahre alt, diesen Film nochmals gesehen und hoffe dass ich jetzt meinen Seelenfrieden bekomme. Angustiosa, claustrofóbica, espeluznante, escalofriante, arrebatadora, apabullante.......Obra maestra rotunda y absoluta que supone además otra de las inmensas lecciones interpretativas de José Luis López Vázquez, el mejor y más grande intérprete que ha dado este país llamado España en toda su historia.
Es que hasta llorando es un actor extraordinario, allá donde esté, los actores también lloran en escena si la escena los pone muy sensibles

José luis López Vázquez, todo un actor. Entre los tres mejores que hemos tenido en España. Hasta el gran Charles Chaplin lo admitió al verle actuar en la película pipermin. Chaplin quedó encandilado al verle actuar.

Yo desde Argentina empecé viendo "¿Es usted el asesino?", porque actuaba Ibáñez Menta, seguí con "La huella del crimen" porque RUclips lo sugería y luego vi esta película o telefilme al principio de la cuarentena. ¿Y de quién es la música del final? Me suena de algún "clásico" del s. XX tipo Carl Orff, Schönberg o Gustav Mahler.

La música del final, la más "trágica", es de Carl Orff. Concretamente, "el Triunfo de Afrodita".
En Portugal estuvo en televisión en plena tarde del domingo. Un crimen. Aún vivo el terror que sentí cuando lo vi. Yo tenía 9, 10 años. Esta película no es apta para niños.

Siempre me acordaba de esta historia. Cuando la vi era chica y me impresiono mucho. Hoy al verla nuevamente me parecio mas brutal y terrible.
Claustrofobica, axfisiante, impactante y con un final realmente terrible

Vi esta película en blanco y negro en la televisión francesa en los años 70, cuando tenía 8 años. Me impresionó mucho y me sorprendió que un hombre encerrado en una cabina telefónica fuera arrojado a un vertedero. Ahora, cuando veo la cabina telefónica de color rojo brillante, ella es el personaje principal de la película. ¿Quizás esta cabaña simbolice esta sociedad franquista de la época?
Es buenísima, no la recordaba tan tremenda. Genios el guionista, garci, mercero y por supuesto López Vazquez con ese cambio de registro lo bordó.
Recuerdo cuando niño ir de la mano de mi madre a comprar al mercado central en Zaragoza, y al pasar por la Plaza San Felipe ver un señor hablando por teléfono en la cabina pero con un pie bloqueando la puerta para que no se cerrara. Yo no entendía qué pasaba, pero escuchaba a los mayores que habían puesto La Cabina en televisión unas noches atrás y todo el mundo hablaba de ello.
La restauración es genial. Ahora ya no parece tan quemada y los colores son mucho más vivos.
A pesar del tiempo transcurrido, esta pequeña obra de arte no ha perdido interés, al contrario, me ha sorprendido gratamente.
So glad to see this scary movie again. Saw it either in late 70s or early 80s late one night on BBC2. It all begins quite bland and fairly uninteresting, but gradually becomes a nightmare. That poor man. Thanks for giving us the chance to watch it again.
Esta pelicula me impresiono fuertemente, fue una de las mejores peliculas que vi cuando vivia en Madrid.... fueron buenos tiempos y el actor (D Jose Luis Lopez Vazquez) hizo su papel estupendamente.

vuelvo a ver este genial corto y me sigue sorprendiendo, como cuando lo vi a mis 10 años y quedé como asustado, pero viendolo nuevamente con mis ojos de adulto y con los tiempos que corren hoy, le estan sobrando unos 10 minutos, entre los "paisajes" cuando se lo llevan y las escenas de la gente, quye algunas sobran, pero bueno, sigue siendo espectacular-

Una premonicion ...de lo que sucederia unos años mas tarde con el uso de celulares y tecnologia...ateapados por las redes y nuestros egos..
Cuando era pequeña estaba viendo la tele con mi madre, era tarde y yo me estaba quedando dormida en el sofá. De repente abrí los ojos y vi una especie de conmemoración de este corto (que yo nunca había encontrado hasta ahora porque pensaba que era una película) en el que ponían diversas escenas y explicaban que era una joya del cine. La imagen del hombre ahoracado en la cabina con el cable del teléfono se me quedó grabada en la mente para siempre.
Desde entonces he intentado buscar por todas partes este film, hablándole a mucha gente de la historia, pues de eso sí me acordaba (aunque curiosamente pensaba que la cabina no se movía y que bajaba automáticamente en la noche cuando nadie miraba a esa especie de cementerio subterráneao de cabinas, que sería como una ciudad de muertos debajo de la misma ciudad). Nadie la conocía y mi madre tampoco se acordaba. Gracias a un post de Tumblr que vi hace unas semanas pude saber cómo se llamaba y de quién era (que ahora que lo pienso, con un título tan simple manda cojones que no lo encontrara antes).
Hoy me he armado de valor y la he visto por primera vez. Los pelos de punta con el final, qué puta genialidad. Ójala consiga hacer cine así algún día.

I remember this being aired late night on a Friday after the movie Killdozer, in the late 70's I think in the UK when I was still a child. There were no subtitles, and the fact that most of the film relies on very little dialogue with the non vocal expressiveness of the cast communicating so much. Can't say it ever made me scared to use telephone boxes but the imagery still stuck with me.
Re-watching this today and seeing the iconography of the ship in a bottle and the funeral with the glass coffin which I overlooked as a child, shows what a classic this is.
Killdozer would have been ITV though (I saw that showing!).

José Luis López Vázquez se lució en este cortometraje. No iba a estar persiguiendo noruegas eternamente por las playas. Papelón que hace aquí ...sus gestos desesperados de Óscar. Antonio Mercero ,pena que no fuese eterno un genio en todas sus películas y series. Y no podía faltar la música...sobre todo la del final ,sin ella no lo hubiésemos visto con tanto dramatismo.

Tras este cortometraje nadie dejaba que se le cerrara la puerta de la cabina , todo el mundo ponía el pie para que no se cerrara la puerta.
Yo creo que en España no hay nadie o casi nadie que no haya visto el cortometraje .

This movie haunted me as a child and even last night I had a nightmare of being the man in La Cabina. Did a search on Google, sure enough, it lead me to here. I cannot even watch it again. It’s probably not that bad but as a 5 year old, it scared the living daylights out of me.

Took me untill Jan 1st 2021 to come across this film but glad I did. You really don't know what's going on and you can feel the anxiety build. Great film!

Great ! I watched this one in France when I was 7 or 8. It has stayed in my mind since then, even almost 50 years later. I remembered the chorus at the end but thought for a long time it was Karl Orf's Carmina Burana...

@@faquineto37 Eso es lo que iba decir. Y no es 1 helicoptero, son 2 porque evidentemente la camara esta en el otro.. No se como eran los presupuestos de la epoca, pero 2 helicopteros no creo yo que fuesen baratos...
En pleno siglo XXI la realidad es más aterradora, si cabe, que esto. Hoy no es necesario quedar atrapado entre cuatro cristales para estar completamente incomunicado del mundo....la gente baja la cabeza y se sume en un estado absoluto de soledad y auto indulgencia con su móvil. Nunca el ser humano estuvo tan comunicado y, sin embargo, tan sólo dentro de muros virtualmente imaginarios.

La angustia y el suspense que pasé cuando la vi en aquel entonces todavía me dura al recordarla. No volvi a cerrar una cabina nunca más, ponía el pie para sujetar la puerta. ja,ja,ja.

Por el recuerdo de los que éramos niños en su estreno, parece ser que hubo una pausa publicitaria justo cuando los operarios lo cargan en la furgoneta y ahí, a muchos nos mandaron a la cama. Así que algunos solo tenemos el recuerdo de la mitad de la obra.
Ha sido fantástico tener la oportunidad de verla entera.

I had seen it on French TV a very long time ago, and it had made a deep impression on me. The end is terrifying, and at the same time I found the general atmosphere of the film strangely poetic. In fact, I think it's a filmed nightmare.
