  • Lately we've had some people question whether this home was even worth saving or would it have been better to just tear it all down and start over. The home is definitely solid and worth saving, but this chimney definitely has to go. Today we share the chimney demolition and cleanup, along with some exploration and farm work :)

      Dumpsters are not cheap, but you can take things on your own to a dump site. We have one not too far from where we live, and it is really nice to be able to load up our utility trailer and the back of our truck and take that stuff to the dumpster. :) Of course, once you get there, you have to unload it as well.

    I know you said it’s commonly done but I’m curious about why you would dump the old chimney on your property rather than hauling it off or starting a new dumpster load? Won’t you just have to clean all that mess up later?

    • @diyfferent
      @diyfferent  5 лет назад +3

      One of the dumpster company's rules was "no concrete in the dumpster". Also, I actually don't even think the landfills are allowed to take concrete. We wouldn't want to pay to throw out concrete anyway, when it can be placed on our own land in a good spot out of the way. We won't be cleaning it up later, it's just concrete in an area that can't be used for anything with all the other big rocks and buried junk that is there anyway.

    I think that pile is fine out there. One day in times to come you may revisit the place and remove the pile. Right now you don’t have resources to drag it away. I read some people said don’t dump it but good grief you can’t do everything perfect for the arm chair quarter backs. IMO the pile can sit right there till another day when immediate projects are looming. Winter is coming and you have so much to do . I say good job you two. I just love you guys💕

    Loved the reverse action and slow motion on the chimney fall. Nice touch. Every time I see you risk life and limb I think TRACTOR. A metal pole down the chimney with chain wrapped at the top and a little pull from the old tractor would have taken that chimney quick and safe. That's not chimney scrap thats fill and should be placed in an easy to get at spot for a time when your doing a driveway or something then covered with class 5. Also get a ball and hitch for the tractor and pull your trailer with that so you don't ruin your car. Love the channel. Hope I don't seem hypercritical. Just tractor, tractor, tractor

    I am so glad to see the chimney go. It was such an obvious add-on, and it completely spoiled the lines of the front of the house. I think the house is going to look so much nicer with the new windows and siding, I'm really looking forward to seeing that unfold.
    I think you can continue working on the interior while you're waiting for the windows and doors. You might as well do all the sister joists in the ceiling of the living room area, as well as adding thickness to the wall studs, wiring, etc. That way, once you've got the exterior completed, doing Maverick's room will go very quickly and the living room will be a breeze. You could even, if you wanted to, start hanging drywall and the like. I know you like to do things one room at a time, but sometimes it makes more sense to multitask.

    • @diyfferent
      @diyfferent  5 лет назад +2

      We would love to work on this inside too but it really comes down to money. We had to spend a lot to buy the windows and door, and even more to but the new sheathing, wood, and house wrap, etc. So we just don't have the money to work on the inside too. That was why we had to switch gears, it was really one or the other without taking on too much debt. (not complaining or begging though) This is all fine, we are doing okay, working it out, and it's coming together :)

Of course, I've seen much worse over my years but still makes my heart sad when I see this choice (country litter). Someone will curse us? We've cleaned up so much garbage in our lives at every single property we've ever owned and still have more to go on this one. No one would be concerned with a small pile of concrete. Also, landfills do not take concrete around here, nor does the dumpster. Concrete doesn't belong in a landfill taking up space.

    • @kellywilliams5112
      @kellywilliams5112 5 лет назад +6

      our landfill doesn't take concrete either, and even if they did, they charge by weight, and it isn't cheap, the bill for that would be tremendous, even the city disposes of their concrete along ditch banks and riverbeds to prevent erosion and doesn't dispose of it at the landfill.... its a natural product and breaks down into simple sand and gravel....not to mention there isn't a farmhouse anywhere that doesn't have a scrap pile in the back 40..

    • @wildwiles03
      @wildwiles03 5 лет назад

      No way. 😂 That's just part of country living. Every property has a junk pile. It's one of the first things you go looking for when you have stuff the junk man or the garbage company won't haul away. There's also probably a burn barrel somewhere too, and the ashes and leftovers that didn't burn down goes to the junk pile.
      I moved the junk pile at my current house and built a fire pit to replace the burn barrel. I put the old burn barrel in my new junk pile. I'm just fancy I guess. 😂

    Great video! Don't agree with dumping on your own property though, postponing cleanup to future generations.

      It's just concrete. Landfills don't want it, dumpster doesn't allow it. We got rid of it properly in a good spot where it won't affect anyone. That spot had so much buried garbage from the past it will never be used for anything.

    • @axiom1650
      @axiom1650 5 лет назад +1

      @@diyfferent My first job would be to get rid of that buried garbage as much as possible, someone will be doing it some day, might as well gettur done so your great-grandkids won't have to look at it. Most concrete yards take old concrete for free, which is used for concrete with recycled aggregate. Do you take all your trash to actual landfills? Is there no such thing there as recycle centers? Most of that junk is recyclable material, perhaps just 10% would end up on a landfill.

    • @diyfferent
      @diyfferent  5 лет назад +2

      @@axiom1650 We've cleaned up more garbage on various properties, along roadsides, creeks, etc than anyone else we know. Someone else can deal with the buried junk in the future if they would like, but it's fine as long as we live here. As far as I know, there are no landfills/dumps around here that individuals can go to. We don't have recycling centers, but there are "recycling" dumpsters that people can take cardboard, cans, bottles, etc to which we do utilize.

    Why are you dumping on your own land instead of putting it in the trash bin you had and having it hauled off?

      The dumpster is a huge expense.
      There is already a dump site, they can put the stuff there for free.
      Someday they may even clean up that area if they have the money of need to do it.

    • @diyfferent
      @diyfferent  5 лет назад +2

      We disposed of the concrete properly. It's nothing more than "fill" now and doesn't belong in a landfill. Regardless, the disposal company doesn't accept concrete.

      just a hammer and a chisel, a stoop to sit on and you can recycle most of the bricks for such planters, and the remains can be mixed into the ground with a tiller! and no more surprises in the brushes!!!!
