Shuichi had a crush on Kaede, it was obvious in the first chapter, its wrong to say they loved each other because they barely knew each other so- forced-
Also, Kaede didn't feel nothing toards Shuichi, only admiration and friendship, the developers said that if Kaede survived, her and Saihara would be *BEST FRIENDS* (im sorry saimatsu shippers- im not saying you should stop shipping or smth like that- im just explaining)
And, Kaede's type of guy is the polar opposit of Shuichi, her type is someone like Rantaro or Kaito, you can tell if you look her Love Hotel Event, because Saihara was pretending to be her ideal, and for what she describes, is nothing like shuichi.
Shuichi had some kinda of interesting in kaede, but nothing for sure
Fun fact: the developers told too that Kokichi's love event is more close to canon than Kaede's live event. While in Akamatsu's event Shuichi is PRETENDING to be her ideal, Kokichi's Ideal IS Saihara
Last thing, ship saimatsu is not wrong, i myself find it really cute, and i'm not saying this to offend anyone. But Saiouma is more close to canon then Saimatsu (but that doesn't make one better than the other).
Saimatsu is platonic from Shuichi's side (kaede doesn't like him back)
And Saiouma is platonic from Kokichi's side (Shuichi doesn't like him back)- But Shuichi, like with Kaede, too had an interesting in ouma, but it was hidden during the game.
